Summer work party outfit

Please help

I need an outfit for husbands work summer party. It’s on Fri eve, so lots will be coming straight from office, fairly conservative industry in the city, but they’ve hired a trendy venue for the event.

I was thinking of a floaty dress and heels, but apparently no one wears heels anymore?! I don’t want to be overly dressed up in an evening summer dress when everyone else is more casual.

No budget as such but don’t want to spend a fortune, and would be nice if I could wear it again a few times this summer.

I’ve had my eye on that Loretta Caponi dress! If it weren’t for the backlog of scarcely worn things in my wardrobe …

On the shoe note, what’s the verdict on espadrilles?

I wouldn’t wear those to Tesco, let alone a grown ups’ party at which I hoped to appear cool and stylish. But you’re entitled to feel differently!

£1K for something she’ll only wear once?!

Um, I'm not forcing the OP's wallet open. I was just trying to give an idea of what I'm wearing/have worn to similar events this year. I also plan to get far more than one wearing out of it.

How exactly is this your concern?

Stressedandpoorlydressed · 20/06/2024 18:52

So I promised myself I would lose weight in time for summer but once again I haven't and I need somd outfits to cover up my belly! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I am 5 foot 2 and a size 16. My belly is my main problem!

Did you even read the OP? Grin @Namechange357 said:

Even if she had not written that I would assume that no sensible adult spends money on an outfit with the intention of only wearing it once. Not unless they’re an influencer; have a thriving Vinted business; or it’s their wedding dress.

I would definitely wear the espadrilles. I’ve got some the same from Jones Bootmaker that are amazingly comfortable and go with everything. I would go with something like the Me and Em dress but not pink floral, something a bit less girlie.

I’m loving the fact the Vogue article says ballet flats are still in fashion - I could live in them in trainers, just like feeling taller when I’m going out.

I do like the Whistles one, it’s something I might wear again too.

The white dress is lovely, but too impractical to warrant the expense. Pink heels are a fashion statement, but just don’t like the shape, even if they are high fashion!

What about this type of dress

i got the first dress above. Wore it loads but mostly to Races, christening etc, second dress I love the colour .

Espadrille wedges are a good alternative to heels, open or closed toe.

Love the purple dress! Hadn’t heard of that brand before, so thanks

This is SAB, I just think it’s a waste of money and not even that stylish. That’s my concern… 😂

I really like that Rixo dress. Great option.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 20/06/2024 22:01

Really like the Rixo dress 👍

innerdesign · 20/06/2024 22:14

The Rixo dress would be nice, I'm not keen on the floral but if that's your style it makes sense. Please step away from the espadrilles. Absolutely not. Mules have been around for a few seasons so that's a good shout.

Why would she only wear it once?

IPoopRainblows · 20/06/2024 23:03

Are you wedded to a dress? I ask as at a recent work summer party there was not a floaty floral dress to be seen.

There were long denim skirts, cropped flared wide leg jeans and culottes in neutral
colours, cuffed satin trousers, worn with simple tank tops, tee shirts, lots of colourful trainers and flats and mules.
Fitted trousers with waistcoats was another good look and bomber jackets were a plenty.

The Vogue article about ballet flats appears annually.

The Rixo dress is nice, although I don't see a great deal of difference between it and the one you dismissed as something a mum might wear.

That's fine.

I think the Bunka one you posted as one you own and wear is pretty grim and also a waste of money, even at that price. But I didn't feel the need to jump on and say so. Since I assumed you were doing the same thing as I was, which was help the OP get a sense of what people are wearing to events at the moment, I didn't see any reason to be unpleasant to you about either your taste or spending. But I guess being unnecessarily nasty is making you feel good in some way, so whatever.

Have a nice night.

@Namechange357

I hope you find something that makes you feel great!

Yellowcakestand · 20/06/2024 23:10

I'd go wide leg jumpsuit with a tie around the middle. I love mine. ❤️

Can dress it up with heeled boots or sandals and jewellery or wear a pair of converse and a denim jacket over the top for a casual look. So versatile!
