Wear the damn shorts

Right, so I am a long term shorts avoider due to my legs, but I need some exercise shorts as I’m just getting too hot in leggings.

Can anyone recommend some really flattering comfy sports shorts?

I have short legs and large thighs (hence the shorts avoidance). Cycling shorts cut in. Really short shorts ride up. Knee length shorts make me look even stumpier.

I thought these ones looked good i theory (but pricey) but several reviews say they ride up…

Any recommendations very welcome please

M&S Goodmove work well for me.

minipie · 14/05/2024 17:52

Thank you! Do you know which ones - I like the look of their high waisted ones, annoyingly they are out of stock in my size but I don’t mind waiting if they are good.

I’ve seen quite a few like that, short cycling shorts with either a skirt or loose shorts over the top. They look nice… Unfortunately though I think the cycling shorts would dig in or roll up on me. My thighs aren’t straight up and down they have side bulges, exactly where the shorts stop!

Flanci skorts are good and cover a multitude of sins!

minipie · 15/05/2024 14:36

Thanks! I had a look but can only see cycling shorts or double layer with cycling built in… I think I need something without any tight layer!

Their "cycling short" bits are really generous and lots of curvy people wear them. I wear a 12 in normal trousers, I'm definitely bottom heavy and a small fits me fine in skorts and leggings.

minipie · 15/05/2024 15:55

Ok, I will have another look… just don’t like the idea of something that cuts off (even if it fits well) around my widest bit!!

I get chub rub in anything less than 5in running shorts, which most women's running shorts are, but manufacturers are starting to make them longer. Brooks and Asics with have 5 in running shorts with "knicker" rather than cycle shorts liners and Ron Hill have 7in. My favourite, most comfortable ones are North Face.

minipie · 15/05/2024 18:14

Oh I hadn’t thought of those places 🤦‍♀️. Will have a look.

I have short legs with big thighs and bought some of those cycling shorts with baggy shorts built in . I'm actually amazed at how flattering they are both on my thighs and waist. I was worried the cycling shorts would dig in or ride up but they are more of a thick tight type material and really comfortable. I got mine off m and m direct, I think they are Adidas

Tauranga · 15/05/2024 23:25

Look up mountain biking shorts, like Findra for example. They are long length and not tight. They are very flattering.

@minipie are you my long lost twin?

Tauranga · 15/05/2024 23:28

And if these look too long there are different version available, another make is dhb

GrumpyPanda · 15/05/2024 23:31

Try men's running shorts, they're longer and comfier. I just got a cheapo pair off Amazon, ordered at random.

minipie · 16/05/2024 08:45

Ah thanks for all the suggestions! and 👊 to my leg twin DeadbeatYoda and any others with the same issue.

Ok, I will try some of the ones with built in cycling shorts, maybe they will work better than I think! And it sounds like sports brands Asics Adidas etc are the way forward.

I bought some running shorts from Ronhill with cycling shorts underneath and looser ones over the top. Bit longer than they normally do. With a side pocket for my phone! And I got them in a sale. I can see someone suggested men's shorts but the proportions are wrong for me. Tight on the hips and too low cut and wide on waist. Depends on your body shape of course.

Verite1 · 16/05/2024 09:45

Also - just a tip - I often size down in leggings but size up in shorts. I don't know why but it seems to work for me!

Epidote · 16/05/2024 10:42

Why don't you cut a pair of leggings to the length you like, give it an extra inches and roll the bottom bit?
I've recycled my old leggings into summer pj's, summer shorts for under a dress, doing that. I don't like my legs uncovered at all. Not because of the shape because of the cold.
They don't roll up or down, stay on the length you want and may be the cheaper and quicker, temporary or permanent option.

SydneyCarton · 16/05/2024 11:32

I have a couple of pairs of the Ronhill (Ron Hill?) ones and the cycling short bit is quite loose - it's stretch jersey rather than lycra (I think) so doesn't cut in, just sits on the thigh. Agree that men's shorts are not proportionate!

I got mine from Sportsshoes.com - think they're the Tech Twin ones.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/05/2024 16:45

I wear gym shark ones, they are nice and loose round the thigh and have a wide waist band with drawstring. No cycling shorts layer underneath, I’ve never found a pair that don’t immediately ride up as soon as you start running.

minipie · 16/05/2024 17:45

The gym shark ones sound ideal

Thank you to pp who mentioned a phone pocket, need to remember to look for that! Though suspect for a pocket I need to accept the cycling shorts …

The gymshark ones I have have a phone pocket in the back of the waist band 👍
