Want to buy some perfume for my DIL (26). I'm thinking something that is just a lovely fragrance that anyone would like. No marmite fragrances. Thank you.

YSL Libre, I haven’t worn it without someone commenting how lovely it is, also like Jo Malone Scarlet Poppy.

User364837 · 10/05/2024 18:49

Does she like perfume? I think it’s a very personal present and tbh I don’t like people buying it for me but aware I might be weird!

TheCultureHusks · 10/05/2024 18:51

Get her a scent library?? Penhaligons do a lovely one, I’m sure you could find similar -?

SabreIsMyFave · 10/05/2024 18:59

Chanel Mademoiselle. My DD (both mid 20s,) LOVE it.

Bit pricey though. £70-80. Depends how much you want to spend.

Definitely YSL Libre! Gorgeous scent that is really lovely and lasts for ages

I also love Chanel. Coco Mademoiselle is a good choice. Chance is also a safe bet. I've worn most Chanel perfumes over the last 40 years but they are two which aren't especially marmite and are easy to wear. They also feel special 🥰

bookwormcrazy · 10/05/2024 19:06

Perfumes reacts differently with everyone depending on their skin so what works for one person, doesn't on another I have learnt.

Could you give a small selection box with different varieties?

AgnesX · 10/05/2024 19:07

Personally I wouldn't. My MIL gave me the Jimmy Choo which makes me feel ill and I have CoCo which I never wear.

Scent is such a personal thing. So, unless she states that she adores something I really wouldn't.

biscuitcat · 10/05/2024 19:07

Jo Malone English Pear and Freesia is gorgeous. But just echoing someone else, do you know she definitely wants perfume and what her style is? If you don't know what she wears or if she wants it a lovely present might go to waste which would be a huge shame.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 10/05/2024 19:07

Do you know what scent she currently wears ? People might be able to suggest a similar one.

I would go for a set of mini ones. (They seem to be called Discovery sets)

dreamingofsun · 10/05/2024 19:33

coco gives me a headache. I would second the perfume library/sample box suggestion if you are determined to buy perfume. i once worked with someone whose MIL bought her channel no5 every christmas despite the fact that she didnt like it (never told MIL as it became too akward

WhenWillTheSunShineIWonder · 10/05/2024 19:35

Daisy Love by Marc Jacobs

blacksocks33 · 10/05/2024 19:38

I was about to post this!

Make sure you go for eu de parfum and not eu de toilette as they're soo different and the parfum is sooo much better!!

Idontjetwashthefucker · 10/05/2024 19:39

Unless you know what she likes then I wouldn't bother, it's such a personal thing

BaronessBomburst · 10/05/2024 19:41

Now I dislike Coco Mademoiselle and am indifferent to Chance!
I like Coco and Coromandel.
How much do you want to spend?
Marks and Spencer do excellent perfumes and currently have sample gift boxes for their new range. You could start with one of those and then buy a full size bottle once she's picked a favourite.

CurlewKate · 10/05/2024 19:41

My dad is about the same age. She would LOVE a Jo Malone sample set.

BaronessBomburst · 10/05/2024 19:43

Since when did typing Marks. and. Spencer automatically link to their website? 😲

alsuoo · 10/05/2024 19:43

You need to find out the kind of perfumes she likes to at least get something in that family, ask your son? I love old lady, over powering scents so love things like Coco and mademoiselle, but others will be less keen!

Elieza · 10/05/2024 19:44

Although it's very kind and generous if you, I wouldn't give perfume if you don't know what types of perfumes someone likes.

Everyone's skin changes the smell of the perfume so one that is nice on you could smell minging on me!

Not to mention their taste in perfume or what they associate with certain ones that they can't now abide.

Could you give her either a taster selection or better a voucher instead?

Or ask someone who knows what she likes what to get her? Although it'd be just like the thing that she's just stocked up on two years worth of them and another one isn't as appreciated as you'd have liked!

makeanddo · 10/05/2024 19:47

Please do not give her perfume that you have chosen. It's such a personal thing.

Could you ask your son what she wears/likes? Or give her a voucher?

Sandalwoodrose · 10/05/2024 19:48

Dolce & Gabbana The One is really nice and a good middle ground.

Agree
This rarely works
Though my sil gave me one that stick for awhile

I had perfume from my mil (we get on pretty well, apart from her bitey bichon!) Olympea- was a gift from her hols. Nice fragrance. Just realised I’m mid forties.

I get compliments on coco mademoiselle, Baccarat Rouge and j’adore. I’ve been gifted Fame- not very long lasting but nice bottle for a young one I’d have thought.

It’s the thought that counts imo.
