Want to buy some perfume for my DIL (26). I'm thinking something that is just a lovely fragrance that anyone would like. No marmite fragrances. Thank you.

Agree with those who say unless you know she likes a particular perfume - then don't.

I've never liked any Chanel.

DKNY Be Delicious Blossom

What is your budget and what olfactory family is she into? floral, gourmand, fruity, oriental, woody, aquatic…

Jo Malone English Pear and Freesia is gorgeous. But just echoing someone else, do you know she definitely wants perfume and what her style is? If you don't know what she wears or if she wants it a lovely present might go to waste which would be a huge shame.

Hmm, I hate that one, smells of old ladies!. Scent is just too personal.

Or do you know any that she wears?

What do old ladies smell of?

My daughter, who is 27, loves Gucci- Flora, Gorgeous Gardenia.

The casual ageism on here is depressing.

However I don't think it's a good idea to buy perfume without knowing if the recipient likes it. I was given Chanel No 5 when I was 23. It was underwhelming then and it's still underwhelming 40 years on.

alsuoo · 10/05/2024 22:20

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle oh Christ get a sense of humour, it was a joke, it was my beloved Grandmother's favourite perfume.

Branleuse · 10/05/2024 22:24

Chanel Chance would be a good choice i think

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 10/05/2024 22:25

Depends on how much you want to spend. My favourite is Penhaligons Halfeti

Yes dgm once bought me that when I was young

I didn't like it

Best to do some detective work first through your ds

I think discovery sets are the way to go rather than putting all your eggs in one basket.

I had a gorgeous Guerlain one once or the Diptyque one is great (but pricey) as you can choose which 5 fragrances go into it.

You could also have a look at Sniph which is a service that decants perfumes into smaller bottles with their own branded atomiser. I used to have a subscription and loved it.

Fraaahnces · 11/05/2024 06:22

How about a Space NK voucher so she can buy her own?

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/09/2024 13:14

Wouldn’t buy perfume/aftershave for someone. It’s a very personal choice.

IDontHateRainbows · 11/09/2024 13:17

I'm a fan of the kayali fragrances, I don't usually like vanilla but I love the vanilla 28, it's not overly sweet but has a lovely depth to it.
If you want to hedge your bets they currently have a gift set of 4 minis including the vanilla one.

Fragrance is so personal t can be hard to get it right.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/09/2024 13:17

I'd only buy my dil one she had chosen personally. To be fair, she'd prefer a coffee or cheese subscription. I think perfume is too personal a gift unless you know she loves x y or z and there's a lovely gift set floating about.

FuckThePoPo · 11/09/2024 13:20

Black opium is a pretty good choice I'd say

JaninaDuszejko · 11/09/2024 13:26

If she loves perfumes and wears a different one all the time then it's a good present, I love getting perfume and wear didferent ones depending on occasion or season. If she has one 'signature scent' then avoid unless you know what the scent is.

A fairly safe and not too expensive option is SJP's Lovely. It's not a challenging perfume for someone who isn't into their perfume but is sophisticated enough for people who love perfume. But generally I'd agree that a discovery box of a perfume sunscription is a safer option.

GettingStuffed · 11/09/2024 13:42

Ask her to give you a list at least there would be a small surprise.

As to a PP asking what old ladies smell of , I've been wearing killer queen by Katy Perry, One by Jennifer Lopez and Signature by LK Bennett.
I do have more expensive perfumes but they're packed away during a house move

IDontHateRainbows · 11/09/2024 14:57

I've just taken delivery of the kayali box set, there is a good range in there of a sweet fruity one ( eden apple), spicy one ( amber) floral ( white flower) and the aforementioned vanilla. I think most perfume lovers would like that as a gift! It's relatively inexpensive for scent at £79.

EternallyDelighted · 11/09/2024 15:04

I agree with sample sets, there are several mentioned on here which I think are awful or give me a headache. They are all marmite really as they smell different on everyone and everyone likes different things.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 11/09/2024 15:04

Honestly OP it's lovely of you to want to give your DIL a gift but perfume isn't the way to go (in my opinion) unless you are sure of what perfume she loves! I have never once liked perfume that has been gifted to me. It's such a personal thing there is simply no way anyone on here could tell you which one to get and be sure that your DIL would like it. It's awful having to wear a scent that you really don't like just to not cause offence to the person who gave it to you (I've been there) Either choose something else entirely, or find out with certainty what her favourite perfumes are.
