Anyone else giving up salon nails due to price increase?

I've been having BIAB nails as never been able to grow my own but due to the price increase I don't think I can justify paying over £30 every 3 weeks for nails. I am also struggling with the time factor and the fact I seem to break/chip the odd nail before the 3 week period too so they aren't even lasting. I am currently soaking them off in the hope I can maintain my natural nail growth 😬

I used to get pedicures but the price is creeping up.

I can do it myself, I’m just lazy.

I’ve stopped being lazy and now do it myself. Everything is just too expensive.

brainexplorer · 11/04/2024 20:47

Try out the OPI nail envy original strengthened. Really helped fix mine after long term gel polish. And yes, I’m cutting nails out of the budget too. I can’t justify it anymore.

arghhchoo · 11/04/2024 20:47

Yep the price increase has put me off and there's loads of home kits out now that give the professional look for much less money.

Remo22 · 11/04/2024 20:48

Never done them and never felt that the price is justified

I try to maintain my natural even if very short

And in occasions i put press on nails

I have also seen online something call Nail rings which is an amazing idea that i think we should give a try

Crushed23 · 11/04/2024 20:50

Gave up gel manicures at the start of the year. I think I’ve saved around £160 so far?

For me it’s not to do with the price increase and I do still think they’re worth it, however I’ve got big medical bills this year which are depleting my savings, then I’m moving country later in the year which will be a big expense, so I’m just cutting down on frivolous spend.

I’m getting to like the natural nails looks though so it might be a permanent change, who knows!

Redglitter · 11/04/2024 20:51

No. The cost has just gone up slightly & my nail tech hasn't increased her prices in several years. Happy to pay a bit extra. Worth every penny

NotmySundaybest · 11/04/2024 20:55

Literally had mine removed today!

Totallybannanas · 11/04/2024 21:10

I was only paying £23 as technician newly qualified, but it's now jumped up to £30-35..I just haven't got the time to have them done every 3 weeks and especially annoying when they don't always last long either. I will probably regret removing them 😬

No I wont be giving up. I've paid between 30-35 for two years.
I have biab and sometimes a colour sometimes French.
The salon is hidden in the Kent countryside overlooking a horse paddock and is a world away from my job in the hospital wards of a busy London trust with a train and tube journey.
It's my little bit of heaven every three weeks and my nail tech is lovely, the setting calm and peaceful. For me it's well worth my money

VenusClapTrap · 11/04/2024 21:20

My Salon has emailed today to say their prices aren’t going up. Next time I’m in I will be asking my beautician if she’s ok with this. I don’t get manicures but I do have regular pedicures.

How you getting your nails done if you work on the wards?

FiveTreeHill · 11/04/2024 21:24

I understand price rises but I just can't afford over £30 every 3 weeks. I will get my nails done when I go on holiday but otherwise do them myself

ImaMumtoaboy · 11/04/2024 21:25

There's a lady called Dorina Vass that does a free 5 day BIAB nail course. I found her on Facebook she is brilliant. She is a nail technician living in Dublin.
Do the 5 day free course and buy mylee products from boots save a fortune

ItsMintUpNorth · 11/04/2024 21:54

My tech hasn't upped her prices for 3 years so I'm happy to pay the £3 extra she is adding, I have started going 4 weeks between appointments most of the time though now to ease the cost a little, but they rarely chip or break so just tend to look grown out.

socks1107 · 11/04/2024 22:04

Fivetreehill I'm an nhs auditor. I don't deliver patient care but I'm on the wards auditing the environment

suki1964 · 12/04/2024 01:28

I do my own nails

Its not for the feint hearted, as gels and acrylics can cause so many problems to the home user. But I had always used polish and could get a decent finish so learning how to do gels, and now BIAB and polygels has just become a natural extension of that

I also wear reusable press ons. Get the correct shape and fit, those babies last 2 weeks or more and as reusable, once paid for, its just the sticky pads you keep buying which are cheap as chips

JamieOliversLunch · 12/04/2024 02:51

Yes was just charged £40 which feels like a price hike of 20%. And like everyone says they don’t last. It’s a waste of cash. Felt like nail lady who comes to your house and uses your electricity etc, is charging a lot extra.

sashh · 13/04/2024 03:47

My regular nail lady has not put the prices up but I know her costs have increased. It is my one luxury so I want to keep going.

And mine do last the three weeks. I have psoriasis so my nails look a mess without gels or something else.

pilates · 13/04/2024 04:02

I cannot afford nails to be done on a regular basis. For me it’s special occasions. Plus it’s not healthy for the nails - they need to be able to breathe for periods of time.

This is biologically incorrect. Nails can’t ’breathe’ and having anything on them isn’t bad for them if applied and removed properly.
I’m still getting mine done and happy to pay the new prices as understand my techs prices have increased also. I go 4 weeks between with no chips or lifting though.

LadyDaisy42 · 13/04/2024 04:56

I am still hanging on with getting mine done, even though its £37 for basic colour and £42 for any detail/French. I will say the quality of the work is the best I've ever had, and it stays perfect until infilled. I am trying to push out to 4 weeks appointments as well. I stopped paying for hair colour at the hairdressers a while ago. I am very grey so literally could not afford to go to a salon as regularly as needed to keep up with the re growth. It's box dye for me now and I book a cheap trip when they have off peak offers for quieter salon days like a Tuesday or Wednesday. I don't spend money on any other treatments like brows etc, and certainly not the current trend for aesthetics (so much for a cost of living crisis with the amount of people getting face injections!), so my nails are my only self treat. But at some point, that will have to go as well.

LadyDaisy42 · 13/04/2024 04:57

*cheap trim, I meant to say for the hairdresser.

pinkfondu · 13/04/2024 05:16

My pedicures have had to go due to costs

JMAngel1 · 13/04/2024 06:31

I just get gel toes in the summer months - I usually make one gel session last around 5-6 weeks as I choose a neutral shade. I’ll still do that as it makes sandal wearing so much easier.
I don’t do gel finger nails - NHS worker and not allowed. Maybe once a year I go for a manicure to tidy up cuticles/buff out stains etc. I’ll still do that.
I sound low maintenance but I’m not!!

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 13/04/2024 07:48

Yes. I started using the Lily &Fox nails vinyl stickers. I haven't got my nails done since December
