I want to ditch the puffa jacket, what could I try instead?

I am late 40s, size 10-12, big boobs, athletic shape.
I wear jeans and trousers, and with the constant rain and dampness I live in a warm puffa jacket every time I go outside.
I really want to try a different jacket, something that will still keep the wind off when I walk to school, but is less grumpy than the functional puffa
I have a lovely leather biker from all saints, but it feels formal to wear it. Not something I can just throw on like the trusty but hated puffa!
Can anyone suggest an alternative?

A tailored Mac

A Coatigan

A smart lined bomber jacket

DianaTaverner · 02/04/2024 07:41

Wear the lovely leather jacket! Life's too short not to.

It's not "too formal" really is it? It's a biker jacket. And it should be reasonably hard wearing, so should be up to frequent wears.

Do you actually mean that it's too nice? That you might look too good? That you don't deserve it? screw that.

ChatHRT · 02/04/2024 07:44

@DianaTaverner, I love the biker, just don't feel as comfy in it as I do the puffs. Puffs is like an old pair of slippers- easy, comfy, practical but fugly!
Maybe I need to try to wear the leather jacket more often until I feel more confident. But I need other options too I think

Can anyone link to a good bomber? I might give that a go

@Fuelledbylatte I wear a scruffy old coat Ivan to walk the dog. Maybe a smarter one could be the way forward.
Any suggestions on a good coatigan?

I love the idea of a grumpy puffa 😂

TheInfusionist · 02/04/2024 09:39

Which is unhelpful of me and I'd like to find the same. There's nothing so comfortable though, so I haven't been able to get rid of my ancient puffa.

Considering a more 'fashiony' shape puffa as an alternative for non-dog walking situations? I like the Lululemon one.

WhiteTilesWhiteGrout · 02/04/2024 09:41

Nothing will be as warm as the puffa coat/jacket. So you can find alternatives in terms of look but nothing will be as warm. This is why I live in mine in winter.

ChatHRT · 02/04/2024 09:49

@TheInfusionist sounds better than frumpy!

I think a navy quilted bomber might be the way forward, trying to find something acceptable that doesn't make me look like I am trying to dress as a teen

There are some good suggestions here, I would only add one. If you don't need it to be waterproof then consider a duffel. I recently got a short one and it's like wearing a little blanket. Also wool is ok in a drizzle.

ChatHRT · 02/04/2024 09:56

Thanks @dudsville - that could be a good option
The puffa is no use in the rain either, but feeling warm and snug is important to me in a coat

I like the quilted Barbour jackets with the belt

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 02/04/2024 10:00

What about a wee splurge on a Barbour?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/04/2024 11:53

I got a leather Selected Femme bomber jacket (in a sale) recently and I haven't taken it off really! So comfy and I can wear chunky jumpers under it.

I've also got a knock off navy quilted Barbour (Massimo Dutti) with a hood, honestly it's been one of my best purchases, people sometimes think it's Barbour!

This is a leather bomber from MD:

I'm loving Roman at the moment for their choice of coats and jackets. Worth taking a look if you haven't already. They have variations of puffa, some fairly smart and some cosy and comfortable.

A leather jacket is a good shout too 👍

piscofrisco · 02/04/2024 13:24

Bomber jacket. M and S have surprisingly got some really lovely ones.

Notanother0nee · 02/04/2024 13:37

I switched to a barbour too

MotherofGorgons · 02/04/2024 13:43

I have an army green Superdry bomber- I think it is the Fuji model- for this time of year.

PollyPeachum · 02/04/2024 14:16

My answer is a long unlined wax coat, and a good fleece to keep cosy. If not raining or cold wind the fleece jacket is fine by itself. Unlined coats can be worn for more months.

I'm an avid wearer of both items, I've three puffa jackets, and five leather bikers.. Still counting! I've always aspired to get the All Saints one but couldn't justify the expenditure at the times, mouths to feed etc! There's loads of cheap bikers around at the mo and no doubt more as we head into Summer.. Defo look at some of those that are kinder on the purse strings and less dressy than the All Saints jacket. PU ones are great and cheaper still! They've alternative colours too for a Summer look. Hope this helps :)

I've five leather biker jackets and always wanted the All Saints one but mouths to feed etc...If I had one I'd be wearing it most of the time..It's a gorgeous jacket. Mine are of the same design but nowhere near as classy! I still aspire to adding the AS one to my collection. lol :)
