I want to ditch the puffa jacket, what could I try instead?

I am late 40s, size 10-12, big boobs, athletic shape.
I wear jeans and trousers, and with the constant rain and dampness I live in a warm puffa jacket every time I go outside.
I really want to try a different jacket, something that will still keep the wind off when I walk to school, but is less grumpy than the functional puffa
I have a lovely leather biker from all saints, but it feels formal to wear it. Not something I can just throw on like the trusty but hated puffa!
Can anyone suggest an alternative?

I was also going to suggest a Didriksons parka. I feel we still need a hood at the moment (and probably all 'summer' too lets face it!) These are a lovely shape and not at all frumpy (or grumpy!!)

@piscofrisco I have ordered the navy M&S bomber to try. Handy as I had my eye on some trainers from there too. Thank you.

I have a long (knee length) black sheapskin coat with fake fur lining... warmest coat on earth and decently water resistant (wouldn't try to hike miles in driving rain but drizzle/light rain will run right off it) and looks very stylish.

Can’t you just get a more stylish puffa?

I have a cropped black quilted puffa with doesn’t look dowdy at all

ChatHRT · 02/04/2024 23:07

@LilacPear I don't find puffas stylish on me.
I am looking at Barbour jackets on Vinted and have ordered a bomber to try. Fingers crossed one of those will work for me

I am similar age and have collected a lot of coats over the years. But having a coat I’m comfortable in makes an outfit and makes me feel better. Casual ones I’d wear include a leather biker, trench coat, waxed coat, oversized wool coat, short khaki jacket or a quilted waist length jacket. I do also have the ubiquitous puffer for football watching days!

A friend of mine has a plain black bomber, I think from Sainsburys. She’s also got a quilted belted Barbour.

I've got a puffa that I love, it isn't ugly at all! I nabbed it in the charity shop but it's from Zara. It's quite short, as per the current fashion. It's a dream of soft comfort and for a warm jacket, it looks pretty cool.

I'd save the biker for dry days when you can style it to its full potential.

Seconding the M&S bomber, with the slightly ruched seams on the sleeves and back. It has been featured by several newspaper fashion pages, and mine (the coffee/copper colour) has been much admired by everyone who works in our town's poshest frock shop. For £50, it is a steal, and surprisingly warm.

I finally got shot of my old puffa as it was a total disgrace but I updated it with a new Barbour one which is a little more stylish but just as comforting and cosy (no wax in sight)

Have a look at barbour quilted coats.

@Fuelledbylatte I like all the coats you recommended. That gas never happened to me before on here! 👏

I'm the same, looking for something comfy, warm but not too warm, light but also somewhat stylish 😂. I keep going on passenger as they have lots of jackets, coats, fleeces etc but it is a little expensive. Check out their website. They do have some stuff on sale too.

Ah! A proud moment!

Quilted down jacket from Landsend, extremely light and warm. Not at all waterproof, I wear a rain jacket over it, but comfy in the car, shopping etc

TheExclusiveSandwich · 13/04/2024 08:28

I got the Marks & Spencer bomber jacket last autumn, also the toffee coloured one and it gets many nice compliments

minipie · 13/04/2024 08:38

Seconding the aviator suggestion if you want warm and comfy. (faux is more comfy than real IME). I recently got one and love it, it’s just as comfy as the old ski jacket I had been wearing.

I would also like a long unlined wool coat

Neither any good in the rain of course but I don’t mind an umbrella

I also have my eye on a cropped padded gilet but both my tween daughters have one so I’m a bit nervous about that 😆

HummingbirdChandelier · 13/04/2024 08:51

Try Zara: they often do lovely puffy jackets which are more stylish. I am surgically attached to the one I got a few years ago in the winter.

I also got this lovely bomber jacket in Asda recently Asda

I want to ditch the puffa jacket, what could I try instead?
Divebar2021 · 13/04/2024 08:51

Where do you live that it’s so cold? I was walking the dog in a T shirt yesterday. Personally I want a light layer and carry an umbrella otherwise it’s too sweaty. I have loads of coats but the jacket that I’ve probably worn the most over the last few years is a reversible quilted jacket from Cos ( in the style of a liner jacket). Loose enough to put a sweater under put fitted enough in the arms to put under a trench or other coat for warmth. It’s black on one side or navy on the other but there are loads of versions around.
