Find me a 70s style dress

I have to go to a party next week. The theme is 1974.

I hate fancy dress and for various reasons I don't want to go in silly fancy dress.

I thought I could but a 70s style dress instead that would show willing without going overboard.

I'm a size 18 so can't manage anything slinky.

Everything is still a bit Little House On The Prairie.

Help. Budget is not super big - think. I have a big M&S, Next, H&M and Fat Face avipaboe nearby. And a TK Maxx. Or online obvs.

The dawn o'porter collection at Joanie. Discounted at the moment and loads that would fit the bill.

Joanie Clothing.

Why not opt out of your dress idea and go for a shirt/blouse look? Big collars were very 70s and are very much back in the now female fashion wise! Any investment won't be wasted as you'll have something you can wear often as opposed to something for fancy dress purposes only. You could easily match with a flowing flowery shirt or flary trousers and jeans.. :)

Look at Popsy Clothing.

There are a few patchwork ones on there at the moment giving a 70s vibe.

Last time I was in TKMaxx most of the women's clothing was 70's style

Can't say I'm a fan of the all the patterns, designs, sequins etc derived from those days but I do love the modern big collar style which reminds me of my 70s childhood! Still a fantastic look in this day albeit buttoned up as opposed to open necked as they were back then. I wanted to be a Charlie's Angel as a girl. I guess that's why the look is always one I've embraced, even when it wasn't in fashion unlike the present day! lol :)

These look great - whilst they are not exactly cheap - a few of this line are in the sale and there is an extra 30 percent off at the moment . There's a great orange swirly maxi dress with flared sleeves and for something a bit more sober a black flared leg jump suit.

I have a long flowery 70s dress that I would happily send you. I bought it from River Island for a similar reason. Will never wear again. I am a size 18, and 5ft 9. It was fine for the party, wore with a leather jacket and a headband. You can have it for free if you like it!

That is so nice of you❤️.

You can also do the pants/heavy print shirt look

Do your hair 70's and you're good to go.

I’d just go for a floral, long sleeved (ideally big voluminous ones) maxi OP so I could wear it again.

I’m not usually such a killjoy but I’m more reluctant buying fancy dress stuff I’ll never wear again nowadays.

Agreed. The Joannie dress fits the bill and if you liked that style it's very wearable. Oddly it also looks more authentic than the links to what are meant to be vintage dresses.
