What to wear to a wedding?

Aria999 · 26/03/2024 01:39

I'm looking for inspiration for something to wear to a summer wedding.

Dress code: formal; floor or mid length dresses or jumpsuits, not ivory, cream or white.

Me; short, broad (5 foot 4, size 12, post c section tummy that needs hiding a bit. 38" / 32" / 38". 132 lbs.). 46 and just starting to feel like my face looks old, so moving more towards light / mid colours.

Normally I wear trousers, t shirts and cashmere sweaters in camel / tan / white / gray / black. I like tank tops and halter necks and things that hug a little under the bust, as they make me look less broad. I generally look terrible in anything too floaty, patterns, strong colours, or cold colours.

I sometimes look ok in sleeveless jumpsuits but there aren't really any wedding suitable colors available that I don't look terrible in. (Also several posters on another thread were being scathing about sparkly jumpsuits and made me question my judgment!).

Please help, this is surprisingly hard!

One thing I highly recommend is getting your colours done. The right colour on a person which suits their skin etc looks amazing even without makeup up. Warm colours have a yellow tone, cool colours have a blue tone. The usual advice is people suit either yellow toned colours or blue toned colours. I noticed you said cool colours don’t suit you - but also said grey and black do…which are cool colours. If you look good in grey then the dusty pink outfit would wash you out. If you get your colours done you save a lot of time as you just look for colours you know suit you. Check around but I am guessing it’s around £100 to get your colours done?

Yes I got them done years ago. I am all about the yellows!

Grey probably does wash me out a bit but I normally wear only small amounts of it with other colors..

Yikes @pearpporridge that is indeed gorgeous but I haven't won the lottery recently 🤣

You don't look bulky btw!
I just thought u wanted a taller silhouette. Platform shoes do this without hurting.
yr jumpsuits nice, wear it with a beige jacket/feather boa. Or cigarette trousers & dainty sandals Wd suit u.

Thanks!

Stick with neutrals & trousers as they suit u, or slim skirts. Search "bridal" or "mother of the bride" on eBay & you'll see loads of beautiful outfits from Phase 8 (etc) in flattering pastel shades.
Possibly search for petite cuts, or choose a long, narrow tea-dress (TKMax, H&M, M&S), with a little pink or lilac in the pattern. You can get lace cardigans online, that will stop you looking bulky.
Enjoy!👭

lol I saw tons of 'mother of the bride' things I felt drawn to when I was searching on Amazon but I am definitely not her mother (she's only 6 years younger than me) and it would feel really weird to get something designed for that purpose.

I feel like it probably says something about my aging dress sense that I liked lots of them 😳

@ittakes2 good point about colours. DD had hers done at House of Colour, and with a make-up consultation too it was £230, but money well spent.

That said OP, looking good in your sparkly jumpsuit! You could fashion it up with orangey red accessories. And a chunky low platform sandal - gold? - would raise the hem off the floor, might not need altering.

Thanks, platform sandal sounds workable, I will have a look.

I have a beautiful shoe collection (literally) gathering dust that probably belongs in a museum now 🤣😢

The black and fold dress is fab!

Glad you like it! I have ordered it to see if it actually suits me or if I was just having one of those emotional bonding moments with an unobtainable dress when I tried it on 🙂

@I ttakes2 I thought white and black were neutrals on the color thing (neither warm or cold). Maybe it's been too long since I did it!

Black increasingly washes me out as I get older, I need to keep it away from my face (scoop necks etc).

I look much better in white and cream. But, wedding.

You have a lovely figure and look fab in the jumpsuit! Something like that dress in a size up would look lovely too

Good point. What shape / color do you think would work with it?

(Also open to shoe advice, I forgot how to wear anything more than about a 1 inch heel during covid)

I think a champagne/creamy colour over the top would look nice. And gold shoes, jewelry etc as there are gold tones in the jumpsuit.

Smittenkitchen · 27/03/2024 16:12

Black and white are both cool, at least according to the 12 season system. Sounds like your warm neutrals probably work best for you (tan and camel). You might be slightly neutral leaning so white could be okay although not your best colour but it sounds like you've worked out that black doesn't do you any favours.
I love the black and gold dress as a piece so I guess you can see how it suits you. The gold might break up the black enough so that it's not too severe.

My vote is for the sparkly jumpsuit (with hemmed legs). Perfect.

Agentdanascullyx · 27/03/2024 23:01

You’ve got a lovely figure, love the jumpsuit on you :)

Thanks! I also think probably the jumpsuit (and am grateful for the kind words about it on this thread!) though I will try the other things I have ordered too.

Watch this space for further dithering about accessories/ shoes / jacket 🤣

I am back seeking the collective wisdom of Mumsnet!

The monsoon outfit has arrived and I think I might go with it. Didn't need hemming in the end just waistbanding as it has one of those annoying barely sewn elastic showing type waistbands which is improved by folding it over anyway.

What do people think? And does it work with this wrap?

For completeness I will post the black and gold dress in a minute. I think it is OTT for a wedding sadly but I don't want to send it back so will have to persuade myself it is wearable to a posh restaurant...

I like the dress best. I think it has a better shape and is more flattering. Also I like the pattern (and I usually don't like patterns at all). But it's up to you.

Quitelikeacatslife · 12/04/2024 18:29

Black and gold is nicest thing you've shown, save your money and send the monsoon one back, it's a bit dreary. The jumpsuit is nice too, with pointed shoes and a nice wrap (I'd do fascinator /little hat thing , but I love and suit them and they feel weddingy to me)

Aria999 · 12/04/2024 18:57

Interesting @Quitelikeacatslife @Wornoutlady thank you! I love the dress too but thought maybe it's a bit full on for a wedding?

But if not then great!

OP posts:
Wornoutlady · 12/04/2024 20:44

@Aria999 I think it's perfect for a wedding. the only thing that wouldn't be, in my opinion is a white / cream dress or something with a feather boa and crystals sewn on it.

This dress is really tasteful and elegant and is not going to upstage the bride / bridal party.

Aria999 · 12/04/2024 20:47

Awesome thank you 😊

I absolutely love the black and gold dress - it's elegant, it's perfect for your shape and looks lovely.

Not a fan of the vest and skirt outfit. I don't think it looks awful, but I don't think it looks anything special - it's a bit 'blah', especially when compared to the dress which is a proper 'wow' dress!

Aria999 · 12/04/2024 23:43

Thanks @thefamous5

You are all giving me confidence to wear the black and gold 🙂

You look fabulous in the black and gold dress! I don't think it's too much, with simple accessories. The co-ord is just okay.
