What to wear to a wedding?

Aria999 · 26/03/2024 01:39

I'm looking for inspiration for something to wear to a summer wedding.

Dress code: formal; floor or mid length dresses or jumpsuits, not ivory, cream or white.

Me; short, broad (5 foot 4, size 12, post c section tummy that needs hiding a bit. 38" / 32" / 38". 132 lbs.). 46 and just starting to feel like my face looks old, so moving more towards light / mid colours.

Normally I wear trousers, t shirts and cashmere sweaters in camel / tan / white / gray / black. I like tank tops and halter necks and things that hug a little under the bust, as they make me look less broad. I generally look terrible in anything too floaty, patterns, strong colours, or cold colours.

I sometimes look ok in sleeveless jumpsuits but there aren't really any wedding suitable colors available that I don't look terrible in. (Also several posters on another thread were being scathing about sparkly jumpsuits and made me question my judgment!).

Please help, this is surprisingly hard!

Commendable detail - but you haven’t given a budget! And it might be helpful to have an idea of the wedding environment and general vibe.

I’m rather envious of your perfect hourglass figure! There’s almost certainly a DVF dress somewhere, with your name on it.

Not necessarily this one, as strongly coloured and don’t know your budget.

Thanks! Budget around £50-£150, maybe a little more for the perfect thing.

I really like the one you have posted except I think I might look better without sleeves. I have broad shoulders.

Patterns do sometimes work if not too OTT (e.g. a similar color to the underlying material and not too much of them).

Wedding environment is Scottish stately home.

ASOS have hundreds of wedding guest dresses/outfits that would be appropriate and fit inside the budget

Thanks! Dusty pink is an interesting idea. I will have a look at asos.

Here are some suggestions:
Option 1
Option 2
Option 3
Option 4
Option 5
Option 6

Thanks for these suggestions @LookItsMeAgain !

I really like 3. I might order that to try on, not 100% sure I can carry off the deep pink.

Update; I have ordered this to try (both best and skirt)

Monsoon are quite generous and the model is 5'9, skirt will likely be too long. I never feel these styles suit if you have a tummy. A nipped in waist dress flatters more.

Aria999 · 26/03/2024 16:02

@Kelly51 you are quite right about monsoon skirt length but it's a straightforward hem and I can sew (this is invariably a problem for me).

Guess we'll see about the tummy ☹️🤞

This is me in a dress I would consider wearing again if I could still breathe while wearing it (size 10 from oasis, those were the days).

Am I right in thinking this is too black for a wedding?

I tried it on a while ago but couldn't justify it, now it's in the sale!

This is the original sparkly jumpsuit. I do actually quite like it, is it totally out of date / inappropriate?!

Would obviously need hemming.

Don't listen to people being scathing about sparkly jumpsuits. I love sparkly anything! Not sequin just a bit of glitter/shimmer.
Yours is nice. Get a jacket or wrap for the actual ceremony... vinted have lots.

Good point. What shape / color do you think would work with it?

(Also open to shoe advice, I forgot how to wear anything more than about a 1 inch heel during covid)

The black and fold dress is fab!

Gold

One thing I highly recommend is getting your colours done. The right colour on a person which suits their skin etc looks amazing even without makeup up. Warm colours have a yellow tone, cool colours have a blue tone. The usual advice is people suit either yellow toned colours or blue toned colours. I noticed you said cool colours don’t suit you - but also said grey and black do…which are cool colours. If you look good in grey then the dusty pink outfit would wash you out. If you get your colours done you save a lot of time as you just look for colours you know suit you. Check around but I am guessing it’s around £100 to get your colours done?

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 27/03/2024 08:45

@ittakes2 good point about colours. DD had hers done at House of Colour, and with a make-up consultation too it was £230, but money well spent.

That said OP, looking good in your sparkly jumpsuit! You could fashion it up with orangey red accessories. And a chunky low platform sandal - gold? - would raise the hem off the floor, might not need altering.

pearpporridge · 27/03/2024 10:40

This might have fitted the bill were it not for the price! Rather lovely an unusual:

Stick with neutrals & trousers as they suit u, or slim skirts. Search "bridal" or "mother of the bride" on eBay & you'll see loads of beautiful outfits from Phase 8 (etc) in flattering pastel shades.
Possibly search for petite cuts, or choose a long, narrow tea-dress (TKMax, H&M, M&S), with a little pink or lilac in the pattern. You can get lace cardigans online, that will stop you looking bulky.
Enjoy!👭

Mbritz4 · 27/03/2024 12:40

You don't look bulky btw!
I just thought u wanted a taller silhouette. Platform shoes do this without hurting.
yr jumpsuits nice, wear it with a beige jacket/feather boa. Or cigarette trousers & dainty sandals Wd suit u.
