Buying a used Chanel on eBay? Would I be mad to?

iloveshetlandponies · 08/03/2024 11:31

I've wanted a Chanel for years and been watching a few on eBay

How likely are they to be fake? Has anyone bought one from there and how did it go? Did you have much recourse if it did turn out to be fake

I would be absolutely gutted to buy a fake or support the fake industry in any way. But at the same time I can only afford to buy used

This is one of the ones I'm looking at

Hmm….for starters only if there was an authenticity guarantee with the listing. I have bought various trainers and designer hoodies via the authenticity guarantee and got refunded in less than 24hrs inc delivery fees when 2 of the items failed. I absolutely would not buy Chanel from someone listing multiple designer items regularly, with no guarantee, no receipt pictured. I would recommend ‘Hardly Ever Worn It’ (hewi) as a site for preloved designer stuff as that is all authentic and they prove it.

QueenofallIsee · 08/03/2024 11:41

That one would be a no from me

Rubyrubyrubyruby123 · 08/03/2024 11:42

Don’t be silly!

QueenofallIsee · 08/03/2024 11:42

That listing is definitely fake OP.

underthebun · 08/03/2024 11:44

it’s too cheap

Namerchanger1 · 08/03/2024 11:44

Absolutely bloody not! Obviously fake!

Rosiiee · 08/03/2024 11:45

Don’t do it.

Have a look at Vestiaire Collective. Lots of designer accessories and clothing which is all checked for authenticity by a third party. I’ve bought LV from them before.

ETA the one from your listing is obviously fake. Way too cheap to be legit!!

Choupet · 08/03/2024 11:45

It's a no from me too.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 08/03/2024 11:45

Lord no!

botemp · 08/03/2024 11:45

I recently read a whole thing about a fake Chanels scandal in the Japanese vintage market. Probably worth reading, here. Aside from that concern, unless you live in Japan the import taxes and vat bill would be extremely high so it's not even worth it on those grounds.

interesting how some of you are saying its too cheap? for something like this, what's the second hand sale value?

QueenofallIsee · 08/03/2024 11:48

@ememem84 up to 5k from what I have seen

wow. ok! i just looked at them new on the chanel website - had no idea how pricey they were new!

Rosiiee · 08/03/2024 11:52

@ememem84 they really hold their value which is why they’re such good investments. And they’re also ridiculously expensive new so I’d say you’d look at anything 5k+ for secondhand depending on condition.

Wimbledonmum1985 · 08/03/2024 11:54

If it’s indeed genuine why is it on eBay?!!

I actually bought a "Chanel" last year from Vestiaire collective and it failed their authentication process.
So I got a full refund

What puts me off about them is the fees and taxes are crazy high if they aren't from the uk 😫 but perhaps i will keep looking and see if anything comes up from the uk

Have a look at 'addicted to handbags' - a really good second hand site

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 08/03/2024 12:16

Am going to go against the grain and say that's an authentic bag - it is vintage, probably mid 80s or very early 90s.

Would I buy it? No, because it is eBay and I don't feel comfortable making this kind of purchase from there.

Edited to add that re. pricing, given the age, style and condition, the pricing is about right. Bags of this vintage/style go for considerably less than many other Chanel bags.

My only criticism is tmatelassé is not a style of Chanel bag. This is a single flap bag. Metalasse is the term used for that kind of leather/quilting, and as that is Chanel's signature for leather goods, they have never needed to flag it as such.

Mumsnut · 08/03/2024 12:32

Try the naughtipidgen's nest website

She is a bag re-seller with long-term Mumsnet 👏

Matildahoney · 08/03/2024 13:49

My vintage Chanel was £5k from a jewellers that resells luxury goods, it has an authentication certificate & was one of the earliest ones to have a serial number, the number is not on a sticker, I can't remember if it's on a price of metal or embossed and I don't have it to hand to check, I'd say it's a fake, I'm pretty sure there's a good authenticator on FB but I can't remember the name of the page.

Thudercatsrule · 08/03/2024 13:58

Have you tried Naughtipigeonnest?

Chanello2 · 08/03/2024 14:57

I would look to buy from a reputable second hand retailer like Xupes or ArmCandy. Make sure the retailer has a good returns policy as a lot of them do not.
You can get it authenticated yourself independently and return it if needed. Places like Xupes have a reputation to maintain and probably more trustworthy than eBay.
Definitely don’t buy anything on eBay without the authenticity guarantee.

Do you know what this particular model Chanel is actually called please ?

I really love the look of this style, I'm not a fan of the more puffy quilted Chanel flap bags if this makes sense. I like that it is flat. And I love how the quilting matches up perfectly 😍😍😍 it doesn't always on certain Chanel bags I've seen

I have sold designer bags on eBay but also vestiare collective. Not all designer items on eBay are fakes.
