Buying a used Chanel on eBay? Would I be mad to?

iloveshetlandponies · 08/03/2024 11:31

I've wanted a Chanel for years and been watching a few on eBay

How likely are they to be fake? Has anyone bought one from there and how did it go? Did you have much recourse if it did turn out to be fake

I would be absolutely gutted to buy a fake or support the fake industry in any way. But at the same time I can only afford to buy used

This is one of the ones I'm looking at

That EBay looks real to me and me too,
pretty bad condition and single flap is not popular.

actually the pricing is quite reasonable.

I sold my vintage flap in vestiares for £1800.

I sold a Kelly 40 in Etuope , clemence leather for £3000, Excellent condition too, but I stupidly lost the strap and Clochette when I moved so it was priced lower.

the whole concept of buying designer bags and thinking you can resell them for way more is very misleading , the market is over saturated , sizes and designs come and go , colours get outdated pretty quickly.

Have you tried the handbag clinic? It's UK based so no customs or anything. I recently got a Chloe and a Mulberry from there, not sure what Chanels they stock.

I had a single flap, gold hardware lambskin years ago, can't remember where I got it from but it was a reputable overseas seller. I don't know what the deal is with fees nowadays but could be worth looking. I seem to think it was Hong Kong based.

Ireolu · 09/03/2024 19:10

I would consider buying from NPN or selfridges second hand and that's it. My preference will always be from the boutique. No Facebook groups or vestiare. Too many horror stories even if I the spending is on the lower side of what is expected. £1500 is still alot to lose to a charlatan.

Try the regular Jewellery and Designer Goods sales at Kingham’s auctioneers in Moreton-in-Marsh in the Cotswolds. They always have a great selection of Chanel (and other designer) bags, clothes, shoes and other accessories which have all been authenticated by their in-house designer specialist, plus are happy to send out more photos and a condition report on request. I’ve seen unworn Chanel ballet pumps sell for £120 or thereabouts, plus commission (about 30%), and the Chanel flap bags are guided at about £700-£1200 depending on condition. I’ve had two Gucci bamboo bags from there, a Mulberry messenger for holidays and our LV luggage and been very pleased with all of them. Ring them first to check about postage costs, but they will post out items as they sell internationally. Plus, if they ever do fail authentication, you have recompense as the item is not as catalogued. Good luck OP!

Definitely agree with this. Any designer bags I’ve sold in past year or so (mostly mulberry, one Chloe, one Celine) I didn’t make the money back at all. The mulberry’s were gifts from my aunt and the rest I bought. I’d have to think long and hard if I bought a new designer bag now. It’s one of those things that I loved when I was younger (buying designer bags) but my tastes have changed now.

I think it looks genuine… but I’d be concerned about the import duty etc depending on where you live. And on that note … I’ve all but given up on designer handbags because of where I live 😞 London is no longer a safe place to be wearing designer anything … handbags, watches … some clothing items now! It’s taken the fun out of luxury items for me sadly …

SiobhanSharpe · 10/03/2024 10:45

The Handbag Clinic has a reasonable selection of Chanel Bags and they guarantee authenticity. They give the bag date too.
Prices seem to be around 3-5k.

So I've bought the one on the second link I shared
(Not sure that link will work now as it's sold!)

It has a certificate of authenticity and it will be sent to the eBay authenticators so fingers crossed 🤞🏻

It really is! I loved designer handbags - they were always my treat. I figured my DDs would get a kick out them one day … but I had to rethink after a near mugging. I sold an item that I didn’t feel safe wearing anymore and bought a little vintage caravan … I figured that our memories can’t be stolen.

Ireolu · 10/03/2024 11:45

@SpiritOfEcstasy where do you live in London? And why do you not feel comfortable wearing your bags? I ask because I just assume that most people believe my bags are fake and as such are not interested in what I am wearing. Many on here have said as much.

As such I wear them daily and on public transport. Maybe I need to rethink my behaviour!

Ireolu · 10/03/2024 11:48

I just read on. That's such a shame that you had that frightening experience. We all have to be so careful.

iloveshetlandponies · 10/03/2024 12:01

@SpiritOfEcstasy how scary that's awful . I'm sorry that happened x

Please do! I live between Ireland and very Central London. The handbag I was nearly mugged carrying couldn’t be mistaken for a fake - it was a special edition and pretty obviously the real deal. It’s not enough nowadays to assume they’ll think it’s a fake. They’ll take their chances regardless. https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/music-manager-killed-watch-theft-london/
I’ve made peace with it, mostly because I don’t enjoy anything that attracts negative attention or causes me to be fearful. I do still have high end handbags. I’m just really careful about when and where I carry them.

Music manager stabbed to death in London for his £125,000 Patek Philippe watch - which turned out to be fake

An "adored" music boss was stabbed to death for his fake designer watch during his swanky birthday party.

Tell me about it. I’m very paranoid about fakes now. I mean, they’re getting forensically copied.

I cannot believe people are paying £1000s for fakes

I was able to pick out the bad fake in this post. Couldn't tell you which was authentic though in a see of 'master' copies. Why buying preloved needs to be a cautious endeavour.

Weird coincidence(?) Zeko is in Daily Mail now.
