HELP....London posh shopping what do I wear?

Tinkerbellone · 08/03/2024 07:56

50 year old Northern mother of teens. DP is taking me to London to posh shop to buy me some jewellery... he's even had to make an appointment.
We are travelling on the train and taking the tube to the store (I think it's in selfriges) ....
I'm a jump suit and trainers kind of person. Heels will be uncomfortable to travel and walk in. What do I wear? Please help me MN with your fashion wisdom. Ps. I'm 50 and a size 16/18

No one will care! I usually go in my M&S jeans. Boots as find them more comfortable than trainers. Never had an issue.

PinkGrapefruitSorbet · 08/03/2024 07:58

I'm a few years younger than you, but wouldn't hesitate to go in a jumpsuit and trainers or whatever you feel comfortable in. If you're buying a piece of jewellery then it's important that it goes with your normal style, I think. Wear whatever you're comfortable in and enjoy your day!

LadyNijo · 08/03/2024 08:03

Just wear what you’d usually wear. London is casual. I used to shop in Selfridges wearing whatever I was wearing on an ordinary day.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/03/2024 08:05

Wear whatever you like. They won’t bat an eyelid. I’ve even been in Tiffany’s and Van Cleef and Arpels in jeans and they don’t mind one bit.

Bgr1936 · 08/03/2024 08:05

Londoners don't dress up for a day out shopping!

Couldntgiveafunk · 08/03/2024 08:14

DP took me to a posh jewellery store in London to buy a ring, and I went in jeans and Doc Martens. I’m mid 40s. They didn’t even blink. Dress it up with a smart woollen coat if you want, but the wealthiest people in London dress the most casual from what I’ve seen!

ohtowinthelottery · 08/03/2024 08:19

Probably just me, but I wouldn't be wearing a jumpsuit if there was a risk I'd be using train/ Station toilets. 😏

SuperstarDeejay · 08/03/2024 08:19

Definitely no heels needed!

Last year when I went shopping at Tiffany and Cartier (with appointments) it was in jeans, boots, a turtleneck jumper and a puffer. I think I made a bit of an effort with my makeup but it was raining so my hair was a fluffy mess. Everyone else in the shops was casually dressed too (except the staff who were immaculate).

AmandaHoldensLips · 08/03/2024 08:20

Do not, repeat DO NOT, dress up for your shopping trip. Wear your favourite trainers and most comfortable / favourite casual outfit. Bear in mind that stores like Selfridges can be unbearably hot.

Mercurial123 · 08/03/2024 08:27

Nobody cares unless you want to dress up? Selfridges is friendly and pretty laid back.

Staff want to know you've got the money and are going to buy something, OP, the more expensive the better, and that's really all there is to it. At the higher end shops they know that appearance does not equate to how much money you've got.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 08/03/2024 08:36

They tend to have a sneaky peak at the jewellery you are wearing according to my friend who used to work in one of the jewellery stores in Selfridges.

Appleblum · 08/03/2024 08:39

It doesn't really matter what you wear, so wear something you like and feel comfortable in! Self ridges is pretty casual.

But so what? The OP’s husband has made an appointment. It’s not as though someone is going to stop them at the door because the fact that the OP’s earrings are from Claire’s Accessories is a deal-breaker when it comes to being allowed into the shop?

FenellaBestwick · 08/03/2024 08:41

You don't need to dress up for any shop in London.

Obviously not! I was just passing on what they said. I don’t think I’ve ever made an appointment to go into one of the Selfridges or Harrods jewellery stores. It’s my big birthday next year and already thinking and looking at what I may buy.

TinkerTiger · 08/03/2024 08:55

'Posh shop' 🥴

TheOGCCL · 08/03/2024 09:01

If it’s a treat/special occasion then maybe it’s nice to make a bit of an effort (that would be all part of it for me) BUT for yourself not shop staff. If you don’t want to it’s absolutely fine. Anything really does go. I don’t think your age has much to do with it.

RoseNy · 08/03/2024 09:02

Everyone and their cat's auntie will be in Selfridges. I think the only outfit I have yet to spot there is pyjamas. I wear the same jeans, rope and trainers that I wear to Tesco.

museumum · 08/03/2024 09:04

No heels for tube travel. I would wear a smart coat (not too warm) and nice make up / jewellery and a favourite smart bag.

Deathraystare · 08/03/2024 10:27

To be honest if your DP is going to flash the cash/card they will be very happy and so will you!!

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 08/03/2024 10:51

They won't care what you are wearing, unless you've fallen in a sewer on the way there and stink, just that you are buying.

Wear what makes you happy.

Twiglets1 · 08/03/2024 10:52

Honestly no one will care. Most people in London wear jeans & trainers to go shopping even posh shopping. In fact richer people don’t care a jot about stuff like that.

Nw22 · 08/03/2024 10:53

I bought jewellery in Cartier a couple of months ago wearing uggs and I had my dog with me. They really don’t care.

beAsensible1 · 08/03/2024 11:00

Wear a cute jumpsuit with cute trainers.
hair pulled back or down depending on what suits, statement earrings and a cute lip.

if you want some thing new mango are a good choice otherwise just choose one or yours.
