Outfit for meal - blazer and jeans

I have a black relaxed fit ruched sleeve blazer from M&S. I would like some jeans in a paler denim however, the only jeans that don't make me look enormous are skinny jeans!

I tried on some of the more on trend wider leg jeans and straight leg jeans but they made me look enormous 😫

I have wide shoulders and narrow hips and skinny legs - like an upside down dorito 😅

Are skinny jeans ok? Or very dated now??

Also need help with top underneath and shoes!

It is for a milestone bday meal at a posh restaurant

What’s more important to you? Do you want to feel comfortable and stick with the skinny jeans, or be more fashionable and possibly self conscious? Yes, they are dated, but most people don’t really care what other people are wearing and are more conscious of themselves. If you want to feel more fashionable and it would make you more confident then ditch the skinny jeans, but if you get more confidence from being comfortable go with that.

Does it have to be jeans? Cigarette style trousers would suit you. I don’t think skinny jeans work brilliantly with the upside down Dorito shape as it emphasis the difference between the broad shoulders and slim legs. Are you basing the outfit around the blazer? What’s your budget?

spacebuddy · 05/03/2024 18:16

I have quite short legs compared to my upper body too (just an awful body shape!!)

Cigarette trousers are they just like straight slim fit trousers?

Yes basing it around the blazer as it will make me feel smarter and more put together.

Budget is not super high but willing to spend a bit for the right outfit.

I'd like to be fashionable but I feel like I don't suit the oversized style that's popular at the moment!

If you feel good in skinny jeans wear them.

I find with some of the straight/wide styles I need to roll the bottom and flash a bit of ankle so you can see a bit of slim leg to sort of rebalance the proportions.

mirror245 · 05/03/2024 19:57

I'd rather look good than look fashionable for fashion sake. I still wear my skinny jeans.

CombatBarbie · 05/03/2024 19:59

Not sure why everyone says skinnys are dated, I see loads of women in pubs/bars wearing them. They are still selling in majority of high street stores.

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 05/03/2024 20:06

I have that blazer and wear it with my m and s jeggings that just look like jeans and they do a bit of stomach holding in. If you don't like wide legged jeans what about some of the wide legged trousers m and s do I wear them all the time and they come in loads of colours.

I agree that coated jeans are a nice option. I have these ones . They are not skinny but the legs are quite slim. I have short legs and a long torso, and these are more flattering on me than the skinny version, and they feel more “ trendy” They are ankle length but look fine with ankle boots.

I have the same body shape and blazer and skinnies do accentuate a bigger top. I think potentially it’s just you aren’t used to seeing yourself in less fitted bottoms.

mitogoshi · 05/03/2024 22:06

Plenty of women in skinny jeans here, most people don't update their wardrobe frequently so even if they have a straight legged pair, they also have skinny jeans.

That said mine are straight legged, Levi's

spacebuddy · 06/03/2024 07:28

Thanks all. I will check out trousers too although I worry it could look too much like work wear with trousers?

I have coated black skinny jeans that aren't super skinny. So they could be a possibility but would that be too much black?

What kind of top/shoes? I'm so clueless 😅

Cami top underneath and which ever shoes you are comfy in .

Block strap heels are a good compromise

Wear the skinny jeans if they suit and you like them

FinallyFeb · 06/03/2024 09:30

I am sticking with my skinnies after trying on about 100 pairs of wide leg/straight leg trousers and jeans.

SuperstarDeejay · 06/03/2024 09:44

I think a black blazer will look better with black jeans than with pale blue jeans.

There's no such thing as too much black Grin

innerdesign · 06/03/2024 09:59

I have this exact blazer and it looks nice with slouchier jeans. I like these from Zara, they're slim enough to still be flattering on me and don't look like I'm trying Gen Z cosplay. Monochrome trainers? Like the Nike Panda Dunks. Or if you need to be dressier what about a pointed kitten heel slingback?

Agree you're probably just not used to the silhouette. From your description of your shape I think skinnies with the oversized blazer will just emphasise wide shoulders, and it is pretty dated (which is a shame, as I loved the look!).

Alternatively, if you're basing around the blazer but struggling with jeans, what about a black mini dress, sheer tights and low heels? More fashionable than skinnies but still flattering. The baggier blazer with slouchier bottoms is going to make you feel big if you don't suit the oversized style (I don't either).

NewbieSM · 06/03/2024 10:24

Honestly by the sounds of your body shape, a wide legged, high waisted pant could be a good option to help balance your proportions, fake a longer leg if you wear heels. Fitted top tucked in and some big earrings, would look lovely I think. It's just a change from what you are used to wearing, but I actually think if you find the right jeans you will look amazing.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 06/03/2024 14:10

I don't have any fashion advice I'm afraid - and would go with whatever you're most comfortable with. But perhaps have a think as to why looking enormous is a bad thing? Why does 'flattering' almost always mean something that makes women look smaller? It doesn't change your health or your actual shape underneath.
Maybe you could embrace looking bigger sometimes. It's not necessarily a bad thing :)

spacebuddy · 06/03/2024 14:42

Nothing against looking bigger. I'm just not used to the silhouette of wide trousers. And my body shape is broad on top - I'm not against that but I don't look in proportion and that's what throws me!

I'm thinking I may have to scrap the blazer.

What would be a chic, elegant outfit for a restaurant meal (daytime)? I want to look put together and not scruffy like I normally do! 😅

@spacebuddy Satin slip skirts are quite versatile? Something like this (although their styling in this pic is awful IMO), with a cropped or carefully tucked top. I'd just go for a white cotton or silk t-shirt. Worn with trainers or low heels depending on how dressy you want to be (knee high boots can work too). I think trainers would be fine for daytime but depends how fancy the restaurant is/you want to look.

Flowersandforests · 06/03/2024 15:58

I still wear my skinny’s - I feel like any other style makes me look bigger than I am.

im out at the weekend wearing a blazer, silky cami top and skinny jeans. And some ballet pumps

stormonasummerseve · 06/03/2024 16:44

Great news coming hot from Paris Fashion week - Miu Miu brought back the skinnies (I'm ignoring the fact they're also low waisted)

Wear what you feel good in. For me, my skinnies will be pried from my cold clammy hands before I give them up. Though I have recently rediscovered the comfort of 501s. I think this makes me not very fashionable but I don't care. My butt looks peachy !

lindyloo57 · 06/03/2024 18:33

I'm your shape, I too have tried lots of wide leg jeans, and have yet find a pair I like they all make me feel big too, what about a wide leg trouser, as the material is not as stiff more flowing. A crop blazer with a fitted top would look good.

minipie · 06/03/2024 18:41

Slim trousers will look better than wide leg with a blazer IMO. But ideally slim not super skinny to avoid the brick balanced on toothpicks look.

Silky top underneath. Or a sparkly knit top maybe. Or some lace edging. Something simple shape but a little glam. Not a shirt or blouse as too worky with a blazer IMO.

Nice necklace.
