Outfit for meal - blazer and jeans

I have a black relaxed fit ruched sleeve blazer from M&S. I would like some jeans in a paler denim however, the only jeans that don't make me look enormous are skinny jeans!

I tried on some of the more on trend wider leg jeans and straight leg jeans but they made me look enormous 😫

I have wide shoulders and narrow hips and skinny legs - like an upside down dorito 😅

Are skinny jeans ok? Or very dated now??

Also need help with top underneath and shoes!

It is for a milestone bday meal at a posh restaurant

Thanks all! I'm off to the shops tomorrow to try and find an ensemble! Wish me luck!

Ok...so giving blazer another shot. I found these straight leg jeans, annoyingly only mid rise but they seem to fit well. I tried on with my blazer and plain black tee.

In the photos the tee is untucked then tucked. Which is better? And what shoes?

I tried some pointed toe ones but they didn't look right!

If my hair and make up done nice and nails etc do u think this is smart enough?

I prefer the top tucked in, have you tried a lighter coloured top to see what that would like?

MrsMikeHeck · 07/03/2024 12:28

jeans look good. Tucked in is more flattering, but maybe try a different top under the blazer. My personal preference would be for something a bit bigger than your current t - a boxy, looser shape. I’d keep it black, but prob a touch smarter than a t. But that’s just my preference, and you look great as is.

MrsMikeHeck · 07/03/2024 12:29

And sorry - should have said, once I’d found this mythical smart, boxy large top, I’d wear it untucked!

ranchdressing · 07/03/2024 12:35

Swap the top for a white tshirt, or a light coloured blouse.

What shoes do you have? Anything black or nude would work - heeled boots?

spacebuddy · 07/03/2024 12:58

Only heeled boots are black round toe and prob a bit dated now.

I will have a look for lighter tops too 👍🏻

How about ballet pumps?

I would have thought a small flare or bootleg would of been better to balance out an upside down triangle shape.
(I love that blazer though!).

FinallyFeb · 07/03/2024 13:10

I’d go for a camisole type top and pumps, I’m not bothered about looks particularly modern or trendy.

PegasusReturns · 07/03/2024 13:35

I have that blazer also.

Skinny jeans are dated and seeing your photos I think your concerns are more in your head than reality. How about wide legged cropped jeans?

innerdesign · 07/03/2024 13:41

Agree @PegasusReturns , perfectly nice body shape! I don't see an upside down Dorito at all.

@spacebuddy The outfit is fine, but you did say you wanted to look fashionable and unfortunately I don't think this outfit is. I also find the all black top half too dark with the lighter denim, I'd try a white top. If you're going for ballet pumps I think you need to go for the modern ones with the straps, but I still think with slimmer jeans and a blazer it'll look dated. Jeans also worth considering are cropped flares , just a bit of a different shape but still slim to the leg. I think it's smart enough to pass for the occasion, but I think you could be smarter.

FinallyFeb · 07/03/2024 13:43

I think the OP would look slim in any style jeans/trousers.

minipie · 07/03/2024 13:49

I like these jeans on you but think the black coated ones you were describing might look better for a going out outfit. These look more daytime.

Top - tucked in but with a belt. But ideally would choose a top in a more contrasting colour or texture (eg satin or with some sort of decoration, or with a lower neck so necklace is a feature).

Not ballet pumps, won’t be balanced. Personally I’m still wearing round toe boots because I think pointy ones look witchy. Maybe just me.

minipie · 07/03/2024 13:50

Agree you do not have a body shape problem !!

spacebuddy · 07/03/2024 14:29

Thanks all! These were the most flattering posing posing posing photos. Look different when I relax and let it all hang out. My legs are very slim and have narrow silhouette but my upper half isn't and it is disguised and well in the blazer and tee! I'm quite chunky through the middle when you look at me side on 😅 But yes I am quite insecure about my figure at times and have put on weight I can't seem to shift because of medication so I don't feel 100% myself.

I'm thinking satin camisole too as I have a necklace I'd like to wear. In a lighter colour maybe white/cream??

It is a daytime event - a meal in a posh restaurant so not an evening thing. That's why I thought the blue jeans might be ok?

Show us some photos of you wearing various footwear and necklaces etc as if you are just about to go the event. At the moment your outfit looks nice but not very dressy.

spacebuddy · 07/03/2024 14:56

I'll try it on later with my black Matt leather type coated jeans and a lighter top if I have one! I don't own many light colours 😅

I like it tucked in. What about these items to go with it?

How about a tapered jean, like these ones here? I used to wear skinnies but got some of these to wear with a blazer and love how they look.
