The Body Shop is going for insolvency

Only recently bought, the new owners either weren't told or didn't absorb the information about the amount of debt compared to assets.

It could mean anything from total closure to restructuring the finances or any point in between. If there's a particular TBS product you like, stock up.

It was such a great brand in the 80s (and I say this even though I was allergic to a lot of it) but long since bastardised.

eurochick · 10/02/2024 21:31

I expect they will close the shops and just sell online.

Midnightstares · 10/02/2024 21:36

I predicted this in December. It was the week before Christmas and the high street in my nearest large, affluent town was packed, couldn’t move for people in most shops. Queues at every till. There wasn’t a single soul in the BDS. First thing I said to my husband when I got in was that the BDS’s days were numbered. We both work in an industry that takes an interest in this kind of thing so that makes interesting conversation for us 😀

Anjo2011 · 10/02/2024 21:36

It’s so dated, the younger generation are not interested in Body Shop products unfortunately. They are all so influenced by what’s being shown on social media.

Silverbirch7 · 10/02/2024 21:37

Not surprised at all. Haven't bought anything in there since the white musk days, if you know you know.

HeadShoulderHipsandCalves · 11/02/2024 00:50

I went in the other day and the shop was empty bar three disinterested staff who stood around not trying to sell me anything.

Yep this...

Marcipex · 11/02/2024 01:16

I used to shop there and so did everyone I know.
I loved Samarkand and was gutted when it was discontinued.
Everyone loved the cleansers, the perfumes in giant glass bottles, the childrens range with safari animals, so many things.

Then it became bath sets and Avon style fruit scented sticky gunks.

AutumnCrow · 11/02/2024 01:17

They don't even own the shops, do they??

AliceMcK · 11/02/2024 01:27

Not surprising given how they suddenly shut down Bodyshop at home.

ive also never in all the years I’ve lived around here seen anyone in my closest Bodyshop shop. It’s always amazed me how it’s stayed open, a bit like WH Smith shops.

Excellent news following their attack on J k Rowling. Go woke go broke 👌

This was my thought too.

Yes, that showed zero ethical compass and zero business sense, on top of all its other failings.

Wonder how far behind Lush will be

Hopefully soon. Misogynist fuckers

confusedbythesystem · 11/02/2024 01:51

It used to be so affordable and unique...you could choose from so many sizes of the same product. Simple refillable packaging. Tiny bottles and soaps to make up a gift basket or treat yourself.

In the last 20 years it's lost its way completely and there's nothing you couldn't get anywhere else.

DavysTractor · 11/02/2024 02:00

Well, they sold out their key demographic. As a woman in her mid 40's, I've been spending in Body Shop since my mid teen Dewberry/White Musk years. Now they refuse to acknowledge me, and any other woman, as an actual woman, I'll take my disposable cash and my teenagers somewhere else to spend. I won't loose a single thought or a single penny on bodyshops' downfall. You reap what you sow

WhereAreWeNow · 11/02/2024 07:48

The one near me is always empty. There are a few things I like (chamomile cleansing balm) but not enough to go in there!
The attack on Rowling was shocking. Very poor business sense.

Exactly. I haven't set foot in one since.

To echo others, when you attack your main clientele it is never going to bode well. I used to only ever use their shower gels and body butters, I wouldn't shop anywhere else. Between JK and the MLM, the company had no hope.

EndlesslyDistracted · 11/02/2024 08:03

I do still go in ours occasionally, I like the camomile cleansing balm and hemp hand cream. Also that you can still get things in lots of different sizes. However it has got quieter and quieter and they keep changing the ranges, part of the charm was finding all the familiar favourites, but the quirky novelty factor was lost a long time ago. You never see teenagers in there. Lush always seems busy though.

FourChimneys · 11/02/2024 08:08

I am old enough to remember when Body Shop was new and pioneering. Very popular with students. There wasn't one in my university town but sometimes we would take a train ride to the nearest city and stock up.

Nowadays I wouldn't use their gunk if they paid me.

Rainbowshit · 11/02/2024 08:11

Used to love the body shop. They alienated me with their attack on jkr.

Same. Well except I was Dewberry.
