The Body Shop is going for insolvency

Only recently bought, the new owners either weren't told or didn't absorb the information about the amount of debt compared to assets.

It could mean anything from total closure to restructuring the finances or any point in between. If there's a particular TBS product you like, stock up.

Neither myself or my mother have shopped there since the jkr attack. All the other posts saying the same explains their current troubles!

tobee · 12/02/2024 02:49

Ha!

My 28 year old autistic dd special interest was The Body Shop and Harry Potter as a teen!! She chose JKR over TBS.

It used to be lovely and different and fun. Even before their disgusting attack on JKR they had become so empty and expensive. I used to find it slightly embarrassing going past our local branch; slightly funereal.

WandaWomblesaurus · 12/02/2024 02:59

Good. I will never forget their shameless bullying of JK Rowling after she talked about being a victim of domestic abuse.

Lush deserve to go next.

Or they knew exactly what they were buying and this is all part of the plan.

It will be sad for the employees but TBS has had it’s day. I go back to the start of the business when you could hardly move in the shops. There was an excited buzz in them as there was nothing like it on the high street at the time.

JubileeJumps · 12/02/2024 07:09

Attacking JKR was unforgivable and the products are incredibly overpriced.

Excellent news following their attack on J k Rowling. Go woke go broke 👌

Another one thinking this.

Kernackered · 12/02/2024 07:26

Can someone remind me what they did to JK? I know it was bad but can't remember. I'm trying to explain to dh the power of middle aged women because he doesn't believe me that a lot of gc women are not going to vote Labour because of Starmer's stance and how stupid he is to underestimate us in favour of a handful of blue hairs. Dh thinks Starmer is a guarantee and I'm not so sure.

justtidying · 12/02/2024 08:00

Unpopular opinion, so it would seem, but I love TBS products. Have used them since I was a teenager and DD and I hit the sales every year.

I love their passion fruit and the pink grapefruit ranges in particular. And their pink grapefruit body butter is my absolute favourite product.

We don't live in the UK and so I can't access things like soap and glory or boots. I love citrusy products, rather than floral. 😞

Disasterclass · 12/02/2024 08:04

Also haven't stepped in there for years despite it being a destination as a teenager.

Just heard Mary Portas on the radio saying she thought the problem started when L'Oreal bought body shop. She described L'Oreal as a company who knows how to brand but not to run retail. Amazing it's lasted as long as it has really.

BoobyDazzler · 12/02/2024 08:08

It’s hardly surprising their shops are empty, their pricing is ridiculous!

Bluedogrug · 11/02/2024 10:32

Sad as reminds us all of being younger. Anita Roddick was ahead of her time, I was gutted when L'Oreal bought it and that was before she died. Just couldn't believe she would do that 😔

This

I was a teenager in the 1980s and I used to love TBS. All the smells! The DIY perfume. The bright coloured Barry M makeup. The bath pearls. The Japanese washing grains. The banana conditioner and conditioner - original recipes - was the best stuff I've ever put on my hair. They'd lost their way by the early 2000s. Now all I buy is the hemp skin protector, which is excellent for spending a lot of time outdoors.

Coronado2 · 12/02/2024 09:05

I'm another who hasn't been in a body shop since they went after jk Rowling.

I do think they would have done better if they stuck to their 80s/90s soaps in animal shapes and things like that though, if body shop was like that now my daughter would want to be in there all the time.

Because of their lack of awareness of their customers can't say I'm disappointed if they close though.

Just2again · 12/02/2024 09:13

I will miss the hemp hand protector, I’ve used it for decades. I bought a tube yesterday after hearing this news and it was £16. I was going to buy several but decided not to. I was also jumped on as soon as I walked into the empty shop, the upselling is annoying.

Just horrific.

Hang on, on that tote bag it says "drop the p word" is the p word period? So they're campaigning to destigmatise periods but they don't even say the word period themselves? Have I got that right? They even encourage dropping the word? I would read that as "drop" as in "stop using". I don't understand that slogan at all. Aside from the patronising bullshit about have a bath and read a book. Calm down dear, stop going on about your domestic abuse, have a bath?? But don't say period?? I'm so confused

To be honest I'd missed the drop the p word before, only really got the why don't you get back in your place, have a bath, calm down and think about what you've said.

I have no idea what they are going for with drop the p word
