Pearl studs: ageless classic or mark of the middle-aged?

I have some plain, very aged pearl studs which I quite fancy myself in but cannot quite make out whether they make me look like overpowdered granny. Thoughts?

depends where you wearing them surley? ;-)

MrsBadger · 22/03/2008 10:35

I only wear mine when I want to look ultra-formal and somewhat older than I am eg job interviews

and never ever with a matching necklace

No19 · 22/03/2008 10:36

arf arf trish, ears only! Haven't seen my overpowdered granny's other bits.

No, no plans for matching necklace! But had intended with little(ish) black dress for dindins.

Don't know what it is about pearls but, yes, i think they are quite 'ageing' and formal

Go for diamonds! Can't go wrong

No19 · 22/03/2008 10:37

And no plans to wear them walking dog etc with sleeveless jerkin and crisp pink collar turned up next to them.

you forgot the velvet hairband and Jackie O hair swept back, No19!

No19 · 22/03/2008 10:49

Actually the more I think about it the more I see Katie from the Apprentice.

Will risk them with my dindins though I think,

I wear mine quite often too. They'll be more Audrey Hepburn with a little black dress than Audrey Roberts.

I also have some bloody good diamonds.

norkmaiden · 22/03/2008 11:11

Pearls are okay, but diamonds better imo. And better than pearls for everyday are these (again imo)
Not posh enough for pearls...

MadameCh0let · 22/03/2008 11:16

a bit posh but I still wouldn't expect to see them on a young posh girl.

Prefer CZ to pearls... What kind of pikey does that make me

No19 · 22/03/2008 11:19

I don't have any diamonds!!!!!!!!!

Boo hoo.

fuddy duddy I think.

Anna8888 · 22/03/2008 11:59

I wear pearl and diamond studs every day - I bought them for myself in 2000 in Mikimoto after hankering after them for four years - I briefly shared an office with a very glamorous (younger than me) Italian-New Yorker who had a pair and I was completely enamoured of them...

Not sure I would wear old pearls though, and although I have plain pearl studs I never wear them.

hoxtonchick · 22/03/2008 15:16

i have pearl studs, they were my grandmothers. i rarely wear them, but like knowing i have them. am currently wearing diamond studs. suspect i am old before my time though (32) .

Lauriefairycake · 22/03/2008 15:24

I have a lovely old pair of studs too - I wear them with a remade pearl necklace (it was a granny set), instead of plain pearl necklace I strung them individually on a silver lariat with some tumbled garnet.

Modern and fab.

if I wear the pearl studs on their own I just look a bit yuk. On a tall, slim woman who wears shades of beige and grey they could look lovely. On a short, fat woman like me they just make me look old lizzieduke

DarthVader · 22/03/2008 15:27

I LOVE pearl necklaces and would wear them with matching earrings.

If everything else you wear is frumpy then you will still look frumpy with your pearls on, and vv

No19 · 22/03/2008 15:47

I have lots of pearls in other jewellery (I make jewellery) so I hvae them in clusters with other semi-precious stones and mixed with other semi-precious on bracelets. That's all on silver, these studs are made with gold claw settings.

In my family my mother, aunts, grandmother etc all thought ear piercing was vulgar and went nakedlobed but these came from some rebel great-aunt. Initially I thought I would remake them into something else but then thought that seemed wrong & also rather liked self in them!

i have mikimoto studs, single string necklace and bracelet (from dp). wearing all together a bit ott, but might do if i even get married, like

i have some old pearls, 3 string necklace, too. love em.

dont wear any of them all that often tbh... accessorising not really my thing, nor my strong point lol. but with a youngish outfit, not ageing at all.

i am not at all posh btw

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 22/03/2008 16:00

I reckon very small pearl studs look pretty cool and chic and not frumpy, big ones bit middle aged.
