Brands to look for on Vinted

I’ll admit I’m a cheap and cheerful shopper often but have lost a bit of weight and would like some nicer stuff. What brands would be good to search for on Vinted - I’m particularly looking for decent trousers. I’m now a size 6/8 (25in waist) which is making some shopping tricky as a lot of modern size 8s have massive waists and I’m finding a lot of things I buy are just too big. So I’m loathe to spend a lot when I’m not sure about sizing.

Hopeful bump?

I really like Whistles, &other stories and Mango. I've picked up a few bargains from them before on vinted!

Bearpawk · 02/02/2024 08:35

Cos, &other stories, Arket

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/02/2024 09:29

Thanks, I forgot I do especially like the Whistles stuff!

And can anyone give me real life examples (as in not from size charts which seem to be complete fantasy in most cases) of sizes that would fit me in some brands if I have a 25 inch waist and 36 inch hips? I have some size 8s that I could basically step right out of without unbuttoning them but size 6 seems so small…

I normally size down in whistles, normally a 10 but buy a size 8. Hope that helps!

whosaidtha · 02/02/2024 09:37

There's 11inch difference between your waist and your hips? 27cm? Are you sure?

Moltenpink · 02/02/2024 09:39

I find the waist size on Paige jeans is really accurate. They are also quite smart as the denim never fades, and they sell cheaply on Vinted (I’ve bought for £12 used and £60 new with tags, compared to £250+ in John Lewis). I’m not sure about hip size though.

You could book a John Lewis personal shopper to find some brands that you like? It’s free.

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/02/2024 09:42

Yes, I’ve been losing weight and working out a lot and I’ve been tracking measurements carefully. 25inches at the slimmest part and 36 at the widest, which is why I struggle with a 6 on the bum but every size 8 I have gapes at the waist.

Avoid TU / sainsburys, their size 8 is huge! I'm an actual size 8 and it hangs off me.

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/02/2024 09:45

Photo for reference. @bakewellbride - I’m finding this with a lot of brands like TU - amazing when I was a 12 but an 8 is like a clown size on me now.

Off-subject@AtomicBlondeRose but if you don't mind me asking what have you changed/what do you do to look so good?

Oh god, everything! Cut down on UPF, calorie counted and do intermittent fasting (might seem like overkill but actually the three go well together - so no breakfast, high-protein/whole food based lunch and dinner, reduce snacking), and work out 6 days a week - I do a Caroline Girvan workout 5 days and run once, so more focus on weights/strength than cardio. It's been really transformative and I have loads more energy! But I started in July and I've been consistent since, so not a quick fix.

😲 that's incredible, well done. An I ask your age please (approx eg pre or post menopause).

Can't help with your question but I'd be tempted to wear a bikini all day!

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/02/2024 10:07

I’m 44, pre-meno, really wanted to get on top of my weight and start building strength before I got to that point.

I did enjoy a bikini on holiday in October! But I find it quite frustrating now that clothes are not cut right and whereas when I was curvier I did at least fill things nicely and looked decent in clothes, now a lot of stuff is baggy or gaping in the wrong places and it actually flattering. The sizing is really important! Trousers are becoming a pain.

You want something with 2% elasticine in it so it hugs you, not enough to change the feel of the material, but enough to give some wiggle room. Have you tried Topshop?

Go to the ASOS website and check out the different brands available then search for the ones that look like possibilities on Vinted, then ask the seller to take a measuring tape to them and send you the measurements. This should be pretty fail safe.

ScribblingPixie · 02/02/2024 10:50

Random thought, but look at vintage? Your measurements would have been entirely normal several decades ago.

TheLeadbetterLife · 02/02/2024 11:12

Bloody hell OP, you look incredible, well done!

Anyway, Vinted. After a lot of trial and error on there, I only use it to buy good quality items in brands I'm confident I know the sizing. The postage prices have gone up, so it's just not worth buying anything cheap on there.

I've had luck with some designer vintage finds (e.g. a rare Vivienne Westwood gold label jacket), and for high street I look for Cos, Arket and Massimo Dutti.

Your best bet would be to spend some time in real life working out what you like in terms of brands, cuts, fabrics, colours, silhouette etc. Go round the shops and try things on - take a tape measure and note the actual waist, bust, lengths.

Then you can ask the Vinted sellers for measurements. Always get pics of the labels on the item too, so many sellers list in the wrong size category.

It's a lot of legwork, but worth it to start building a wardrobe you actually love. I'm in the process too and enjoying it.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 02/02/2024 11:20

Wow Atomic, you look phenomenal!!! I’m the same age as you and it’s given me inspiration. This is the kick up the bum I need 😃

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/02/2024 12:38

@YoungBritishPissArtist it does take a while but I saw something that said it doesn’t matter if something takes a long time, the time would have passed anyway and that resonated with me for some reason! I had written off my flat stomach/size 8 days but here I am.

Thank you, this is such good advice 💐

Lydara22 · 02/02/2024 12:45

Although I'm not of the TopShop demographic, their trousers are great for my size 6, 5ft 2 body.

Was going to post this! Definitely look at vintage.
