Which dress for my fancy 40th?

Hello!

I’m turning 40 next month and my husband has a surprise ‘fancy’ (apparently) night organised.

I’d like to buy a beautiful dress I will wear lots of times again, and am torn between these 2. Is the red too short? Is the black too Christmassy?

help!

Out of the two I would go for the black although I don't particularly like it. The red one looks like something out of Quiz. Sorry!

I‘m struggling to find something suitable that’s grown up but also a bit sexy.

The black one reminds me of Wednesday Addams. Definitely prefer the red.

My 40th dress - also backless - I think this time of year we gravitate to red and black but something different might be nice to think about- ignore the slight tummy!!

I should have said, I definitely want sleeves and the ability to wear a bra!

The black one is nice enough… the red one is sexy and I’d definitely go for it. Its much more a birthday party girl frock than the black one.

Between those 2, definitely the red. Sorry but the black one is awful.

You know, on 2nd thoughts, you wear what you want to, doesn’t matter what anyone else's personal taste is- you go for what you want and enjoy!

I love the red one, I like that shape a lot.

Neither, the red one looks frumpy on top and the bows in the black one are hideous.

The red. I think the black one will date poorly.

I also prefer the red as the black is elegant but a bit staid for a party.
However, I think if you are spending such a large amount of money on one dress, you should be able to find something more beautiful than that.

Just want to say- wear something short and sexy and fancy because I wore an amazing dress for my 40th and we're only 6 years on and I couldn't get in it/ feel self conscious of myself now and love looking back at pics where I looked and felt fab.

I think Davina's/ a version of the red dress which isn't so net curtain-y would probably be best, but I am no style guru 😂

I'm not a huge fan of either. The black seems a tad frumpy and the red reminds me of the 80s, which is not a fashion period I particularly admire. Of the two I prefer the red thoigh.

What's your fave body part to show off? I'm assuming legs?

I like both for a birthday, the red is much more fun!

The red to me looks barely a tenth of the cost.

The red, not keen on the neck but it’s a million miles better than the rather frumpy black one..

I'd definitely go for the red if my figure could pull it off!

I prefer it in the dark forest green colour though.
