Which dress for my fancy 40th?

Hello!

I’m turning 40 next month and my husband has a surprise ‘fancy’ (apparently) night organised.

I’d like to buy a beautiful dress I will wear lots of times again, and am torn between these 2. Is the red too short? Is the black too Christmassy?

I take your point that maybe the black will date and is less glamorous (I do love it though).

I’ve actually ordered the last dress here, as I’d been gazing at it for months but it was too expensive but currently has 25% off for Black Friday. So hopefully that might be a winner!

I'm coming round to the Solani black velvet being the nicest. Most of the alternative suggestions are just more "non dresses" - there's no styling, or design or cut beyond being short and tight. They could come from any supermarket or high street shop. I much prefer the Solani black velvet over that black mini dress. It's your party of course so only your choice and what makes you happy matters.

I've liked most of what's been linked to, I'm sure you'll look fantastic in whatever you choose but I definitely think you should go for maximum fun and sexy for your 40th. I love mini dresses at the moment and have just ordered a mini skirt to try for the first time in years.

I've got nearly a year until my 40th so judging by this thread I'd better start getting in shape and saving up

Pricey... it is cute though, definitely miles better than both original choices and a classic 'little black dress' that will wear well for hopefully a long time.

Between the 2 definitely the black. I strongly dislike the red.

Ok, it looks to me like you're willing to spend a bit to get the right dress for you. So would I be right in saying that you have a budget but it could go up to £700 or thereabouts?

The dress is far too short, the side bit is weird, she is standing weirdly, and she is too old for the dress. That said, Davina is about ten years older than OP, who is the same age as I am.

OP, have you considered the brand Self Portrait? They have some stunning dresses, especially if you are slim but also curvy.

I really dislike the red dress for any age. I really don't like "dresses" which are just strips of cloth as short and as tight as can be got away with. To me they all look the same and none of them are interesting.

Not mean, just true. She needs a mirror or a truthful friend. I wouldn't dress like that, and I am over ten years younger than Davina and also more attractive than she is (not saying I'm anything special, but still better looking than her) She would look better if she weren't always chasing youth.

I mean, it isn't hard. People are reacting as if I'd said I was better looking than Monica Belluci (which would be utter nonsense) I am a slightly above average looking woman, nothing special but not awful either, but I dress for my age and for what suits me. Davina does not, and thus doesn't look her best, at least in this picture.

Actually I think davina looks great, I am considered attractive, and am confident in that, as such the result is I would never ever feel the need to bring another woman down as you did. And big myself up at the same time. Even if I wasn’t I wouldn’t.

i never feel threatened or jealous and don’t attack other women, and other in this context do not sit and tell folks I am attractive whilst bringing other women down. Why is it relevant if you are more attractive? Why did you rush in to bring her down and tell everyone you were better.
