Please help me find THE winter coat

I've worn the same winter coat from Jigsaw for about ten years and it's falling apart so I'm ready to invest in a new one, and am happy to spend up to £350 for something good quality to last another ten or so years hopefully. But I just can't find the right one!

My wish list is:
Single breasted
Collar (but not funnel neck)
No belt - I've tried a few and they feel bulky and like I'm wearing a dressing gown
Knee or mid-calf length - I'm 5'4 so anything much longer drowns me
Straight or cocoon type shape
High % wool, ideally 100% and bonus points for recycled/sustainable credentials
Nothing too 'military style' with epaulettes etc
Some texture to the fabric i.e. not super smooth and shiny
Natural colour i.e. some shade of blue, green, brown or beige - love teal
Nothing too crazy in terms of the lining, which rules out a lot of e.g. Ted Baker

This comes pretty close to perfection for me but I can't quite justify the price tag: Gerard Darel Samirah Plain Coat, Blue at John Lewis & Partners

This should tick most of the boxes but for some reason I can't get excited about it: Teal Fran Boucle Coat | WHISTLES |

Would love any other ideas!

Following with interest as I need a new coat. I love some of the suggestions on here but I've never coped well with a winter coat that doesn't have the option to button up to the neck with a neat collar. Anything that buttons low with revers reveals what's underneath which can be a headache with colour matching unless I'm missing something.

I totally agree.

Lifestooshort71 · 11/11/2023 08:15

Indeed!

Winter42 · 11/11/2023 09:33

Probably not the style you are after but these are may favourite winter coats. Partly because they are so warm.

I managed to get a second hand one which is still in great condition for £50 on eBay.

Get the Gerard Darel coat it is beautiful and ticks all your boxes.

sorry but do you have a link for this one?

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 11/11/2023 11:58

@EverydayParis ignore me, found it in the OPs message, lack of coffee made me ask silly Q.......

Darklane · 11/11/2023 12:13

I like a hood so love the duffle coat. As well as a wool one I’ve a sheepskin one that’s been cosy for years.
With any that don’t button up a cashmere snood makes a lovely warm infill.

Summerhillsquare · 11/11/2023 12:28

Omg those La Redoute coats! Are they not great quality at that price?

shewhomustbeEbayed · 11/11/2023 14:33

I’d look on ebay or Vinted, you are likely to get more for your money and they are likely to be better made than new season coats.
I’ve just bought a lovely, new Jacques Vert navy wool/cashmere from the local hospice shop for £12, it is brilliant.

It might not match your criteria for the shape, but I am OBSESSED with these coats from British Retro. I have a dark grey one with a black collar and it is my favourite thing ever. It's warm, comfortable, fits well and I feel fabulous whenever I wear it.

I like the look of those but that's a lot for a coat with only 20% wool.

I'm a massive Vinted fan for kids and cheaper adult stuff but have a bit of a block when it's more of an investment and I can't send it back (I know I could resell but don't really want the hassle). I'm also between sizes so almost always have to try both to decide which works best!

I also don't really know what more 'designer' brands to look for second-hand - would love any tips as environmentally and financially it's such a no brainer.

Hi! Uh oh you've got me on my own forever coat hunt now... I think this one would tick your boxes:
https://www.thewhitecompany.com/uk/Wool-Double-Faced-City-Coat/p/A05861?swatch=Pale%20Blue
Or maybe this one but could be a bit swampy? https://www.thewhitecompany.com/uk/Wool-Double-Faced-Long-Coat/p/A07453?swatch=Black

Love the Sezane one above but in navy, I've put it on my watchlist...

I bought one like this a couple of years ago and it was fairly high quality. I have never been so cold in my life! Back to more regular coats. For this reason OP my advice is to go to the shop and try it on. If you are going to wear it for ten years, it needs to be right for you.

HappyHamsters · 11/11/2023 17:04

M&s have a relaxed fit recycled coat for £49.50 but I can't post a pic, has anyone bought one,

AnnaMagnani · 11/11/2023 17:10

Where do you live?

There is a lady selling vintage coats every weekend in Cambridge market and having spent most of the morning trying on coats around town, the difference in quality for the vintage ones was mindblowing.

The quality from the 80s and 90s was so much better than today.

wavingfuriously · 11/11/2023 19:43

thanks, some of those are lovely. am also looking for a 100% wool coat, double breasted, am tall 5' 11"

stringbean · 11/11/2023 20:06

@wavingfuriously - have a look at Jigsaw. They have a lovely long wool coat various colourss*

SE London. Have a friend in Cambridge though, could pay her a visit! Used to haunt the north end of Portobello market in my youth and that was great for vintage coats, but doubt it's like that anymore.

I agree , I found a vintage coat in a charity shop . Wool and cashmere blend. It was £7 I love it so much .

AnnaMagnani · 11/11/2023 20:43

There are still a whole lot of vintage sellers in Portobello, best on a Friday in the covered bit near the flyover.
