Pls help me dress for the Savoy Grill

It's my husband's 50th birthday coming up and I've booked the Savoy Grill as something special for him. Their dress code is confusing for me. It's something comfortable you feel elegant in (or similar to that). He will be wearing a suit which I'm not sure if that's a good choice or not. I think men are expected to wear jackets.

I have ordered this dress: https://www.debenhams.com/product/fs-collection-velvet-wrap-style-long-sleeve-mini-dress-in-blue_p-3641b244-c25d-4fc7-b123-f8c16e2644e5?colour=Teal

His birthday is in January. Do you think this will be ok?

I also need shoes. I have size 8 (EU42) feet and I'm tall so ideally flat or low heels are needed.

For context I'm 36 size 14/16 (chubby hourglass), and 5'9. I'm not very good at dressing up. What else should I be thinking of?

She did say she didn’t want to look cheap. I think there are ways of avoiding this but polyester velvet is not that great. There are alternatives without spending loads.

I agree you don’t have to spend ££, just choose fabric wisely.

Londoner here I don’t wear taupe trousers or trainers, I wear a lot of dresses. But I don’t wear cheap velour dresses as they’re a bit grim.

WOW! not really nice to say OP's dress is cheap and grim.

OP if you like it, go for it. I don't like the mary janes though. sorry!

She’s not decided on it yet!

We had dd1s 21st birthday dinner there for family and it was lovely. A range of dresses - a mix of Londoners and out of towners! but everyone wore what they felt good in. If you haven’t already OP it’s worth calling and letting them know it’s a special occasion. They made it really special for us. I’m sure you dh will enjoy it.

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 15:28

@MrsWobble3 thank you for the tip! I will let them know. I'm very excited. I know he's going to be made up about going. It is special for us.

OP have you looked on trip advisor? (search Savoy Grill). People all post photos so you can have a look at what people are wearing. Lots of men in suits, some in ties, lots of women in both trousers and dresses. Whatever you wear, do it with confidence! Xx

FrancisSeaton · 05/11/2023 15:38

That dress is like a Christmas party dress
Not really what people wear to the grill in general nor is it a suited and booted place really
Smart jeans and shirt for your hubby and you could get away with a regular tea/shift dress

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 16:05

@TizerorFizz i wasn't offended. Just found the honesty amusing. I'm going to have to come up with a few outfits and try them on.

I have bought a lovely jumper today. Well by my standards any way. So I might try and sort something to go with it. I'll tell DH jeans boots and shirt 😊

I very rarely dress up but had a do I wanted to look good for not long ago. I bought an absolutely gorgeous quality silk shirt from Vinted for £20. It suited my style and I felt great. IMHO you can't go wrong with a good silk shirt.
I happened to wear it with a sequin skirt (eBay) but it also looks great with trousers & jeans.

Oh please don't let them ruin the experience for you. Many people here think the epitome of being dressed up is a toast jumper and jeans! It sounds like you'd suit a dress and I love dresses with a heeled boot or shoes and I'm 5'10. It just makes it so elegant.

It's a 50th, it's special, and for me getting dressed up is part of the whole making the day feel special.
Hope your husband has a lovely birthday.

Again with the competitive under dressing! Why do people do this? It’s my pet hatred. OP has said it’s a special occasion - she clearly wants to dress up. It’s just untrue to suggest that she will get looks for being overdressed! Or only from the spiteful/insecure! It is true that generally people are less dressed up in London but it’s also true that you can wear whatever you want. I always like to dress up if it’s a special occasion and (gasp horror) so do lots of other people. Have a great time OP - I’m sure you will fantastic whatever you wear.

I agree!

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 16:49

@Myfabby thank you. I'm so looking forward to it. I want a dress or skirt. Trousers don't seem right for the occasion. I'll get something. I have ages yet thankfully.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 05/11/2023 16:52

Dear Lord, do not wear those with a velvet minidress, OP. You'll look like Grayson Perry.

LadyEloise1 · 05/11/2023 17:01

Grayson Perry indeed 😂 @MissLucyEyelesbarrow
Others have spoken up earlier on today about the metallic pink Mary Jane's with the short blue velvet dress so 🤞she won't wear them.

thirdfiddle · 05/11/2023 17:15

I don't think you can overdress. It's a restaurant, you're not socialising with other people you're socialising with your own party, or in this case you & your DH - you can make your own party as posh as you like. Don't dress up so much you feel uncomfortable, but enough to make it feel really special to your DH.

Azaleah · 05/11/2023 19:11

@OverToYouTony The dress is lovely. Just wear a comfy pair of boots and it will look more casual. Have a wonderful time with your husband 💖

ChampagneLassie · 05/11/2023 19:11

i used to go to places like this frequently and I always tended to dress on fancy side; my preference I like to look nice. I’d much rather be over than underdressed for anything. It’s a special occasion and I’d say dress for you and DH. I think that dress is lovely. Id pair with black patent heels personally. If you’ve got time why not do the stylist thing in John Lewis and you might get some other ideas

TizerorFizz · 05/11/2023 20:32

Over the knee boots too? Really not a great look. Too Pretty Woman.
