Pls help me dress for the Savoy Grill

It's my husband's 50th birthday coming up and I've booked the Savoy Grill as something special for him. Their dress code is confusing for me. It's something comfortable you feel elegant in (or similar to that). He will be wearing a suit which I'm not sure if that's a good choice or not. I think men are expected to wear jackets.

I have ordered this dress: https://www.debenhams.com/product/fs-collection-velvet-wrap-style-long-sleeve-mini-dress-in-blue_p-3641b244-c25d-4fc7-b123-f8c16e2644e5?colour=Teal

His birthday is in January. Do you think this will be ok?

I also need shoes. I have size 8 (EU42) feet and I'm tall so ideally flat or low heels are needed.

For context I'm 36 size 14/16 (chubby hourglass), and 5'9. I'm not very good at dressing up. What else should I be thinking of?

I wore wide leg trousers a t shirt and blazer with trainers.
It's really informal.
Have a lovely time

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 09:06

I normally wear jumper dresses with tights and boots just as every day wear. I wanted it to be special for various reasons but obviously because it is his birthday.

I'm struggling with fashion at the moment.

I too think the linked dress is too dressy, it’s too shiny as a pp said.

Ophy83 · 05/11/2023 09:16

I think you'll look lovely in that dress and the pink shoes are fab

TizerorFizz · 05/11/2023 09:18

Trouser suit. Being fashionable is easy if you buy one. Not black and one you can put a coat over. Short glam dress if you are nearing 50 is a bit ott. Just a decent day dress is fine. I think decent hair and presentation looks better. Gold shoes? Never get this. Why? Choose black shoes with dark green.

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 09:20

@TizerorFizz I'm not nearly 50. I'm 36.

Midi dresses don't look great on me because of my height and not being willowy.

Lots of winter white mixed with camel looks good at the moment. So camel trousers (wide leg) and paler knitted top. Not chunky but fine knit. Gold jewellery and camel coat over. London is rarely that cold! Or wear the same combo but shades of grey. Colour blocking is in. Red too - although not for me!

Spinet · 05/11/2023 09:24

Lovely dress. It's a celebration! So dress up if you like! You will only look out of place if you feel uncomfortable (I mean in your clothes).

DonPeggyJoan · 05/11/2023 09:45

I sent a few years ago, my DH booked it as a treat , we both dressed up , I wore a nice dress he wore a suit and tie. Well let's just say there was an obvious group of people who were there as a treat (I was in that group!) and the ones who have money and go to places like this a lot.... they were dressed much more casually, some were even in sports wear!

There's nothing wrong with either. It is a special treat, dress for it! Your dress choice is gorgeous!
Next time I go I'll be more smart casual I think.

Verite1 · 05/11/2023 09:45

Again with the competitive under dressing! Why do people do this? It’s my pet hatred. OP has said it’s a special occasion - she clearly wants to dress up. It’s just untrue to suggest that she will get looks for being overdressed! Or only from the spiteful/insecure! It is true that generally people are less dressed up in London but it’s also true that you can wear whatever you want. I always like to dress up if it’s a special occasion and (gasp horror) so do lots of other people. Have a great time OP - I’m sure you will fantastic whatever you wear.

MissHavershamReturns · 05/11/2023 09:49

Plenty of people do dress up at these places. I went to the Wolsey recently and there was a real mix.

cocksstrideintheevening · 05/11/2023 09:50

It's really not formal. Wear what you are comfortable in.

sarahtalkstoomuch · 05/11/2023 09:56

I did chef’s table at the Savoy Grill recently, and it was great, I went for a little black dress.

I’ve eaten in the main restaurant too, you really see a mix of what people are wearing, but you won’t be over dressed. I’m a Londoner too, if that helps. I do agree we are generally casual, but not always

Hope you have a brilliant time, I love it there. Have a drink on the bar first

NashvilleQueen · 05/11/2023 10:01

These threads are always the same. The idea that no one in London ever wears a nice dress to celebrate a happy occasion and that your dull suburban ways will be exposed if you don't follow the form.

There will be people wearing all sorts of different things OP. If you want to wear a short velvety dress (despite the lighting Hmm) then you do it. It sounds like it's a treat for you both rather than something you do all the time. Make the most of it and wear what you want. You won't be out of place.

LadyEloise1 · 05/11/2023 10:05

I think that short dress with those flat pink Mary Janes would be awful. Unless you have really long slim legs. Sorry

OneFamily · 05/11/2023 10:07

OP I think it’s lovely. We used to go to The Savoy fairly often and people do wear all sorts. It’s a special occasion so absolutely wear the dress & have a wonderful time. I’ve been in anything from jeans to fancy dress depending on occasion.

User0000009 · 05/11/2023 10:09

ChristmasPuddingFace · 05/11/2023 08:37

Don't overthink it.

The Savoy is very relaxed. I went to a wedding lunch there.
The Ritz is more fussy- men in ties and jackets, no trainers.

The no-nos would be scruffy trainers (on either of you), joggers etc , jeans.

You can really wear almost anything that resembles smart casual or dressier, and TBH you will get more 'looks' for being over-dressed than under-dressed.

100 per cent this. No need to overdress. It’s such a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy x

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/11/2023 10:11

You could always spend the money on jewellery instead to dress up an existing outfit.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/11/2023 10:24

Informal smart casual from my experience and much prefer @Trevorton’s Monsoon and Phase Eight dresses to one OP has linked to.

GellerYeller · 05/11/2023 10:27

There was a documentary series about the Savoy on ITV a while back. If it’s on ITVx you could take a look and see what people were wearing in there. Pretty sure it featured the Grill as well as other areas. Enjoy yourself.

Mirabai · 05/11/2023 10:34

Personally I think the dress looks both cheap and overdressed. I’m sure you can find something more elegant. Don’t go overboard though the Savoy Grill is not dressy.

AbbeyGailsParty · 05/11/2023 10:44

Your dress is lovely, beautiful colour.
You dress up as much as you like, it’s yours and DHs occasion. Have a great evening.

OverToYouTony · 05/11/2023 10:44

Such a mix of comments. I am struggling for things to wear this year. One I'm fatter and too the selection (in my opinion) isn't great. I want to dress up. It is a special occasion and for me it's a huge expense and a big deal.

I've been planning this almost a year. I know for some it will just be a dinner but for me I've been saving up for it. I don't want to look cheap.

TotalOverhaul · 05/11/2023 10:49

That dress is beautiful. I'd dress it down slightly - Mary Janes are a good idea. I'd tend to aim for a look which suggests you have dressed for the whole day, not the special lunch. Think about what else you are doing in town.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 05/11/2023 10:49

Having been there, you will be fine in the blue dress, but with the caveat you do not under any circumstances wear those hideous pink mary janes with it! Unless, of course you have legs like a supermodel, but even then i would question those particular shoes 😂🤣😂Enjoy.
