Would this look silly on a 40 year-old?

Here
I ask because DD wears similar and she is 3 1/2

lou33 · 10/03/2008 13:56

it's fine

hatwoman · 10/03/2008 13:59

assuming it's knee length (shorter would get a definite no from me) I think the problem is that it's both flippy and denim. either on their own would be ok but both together really doesn;t do it for me. and I don;t think it's an age thing. I wouldn;t like it on anyone over about 10.

poppynic · 10/03/2008 14:02

I think it looks too young but then I'm far too conservative. But the really important thing here is, immo, that you don't wear it when your daughter wears hers. (I think black denim looks bogany).

lou33 · 10/03/2008 15:07

actually i dont hink age has anything to dow ith it

it is more to do with style, fit, body shape, attitude, confidence and what you wear it with

Walnutshell · 10/03/2008 15:11

I'll second that lou33

Sputnik · 10/03/2008 15:23

I would consider similar in another fabric, if I could find it. Problem is I have few opportunities to go out shopping and I'm in Italy, so need a website that'll send stuff here at reasonable rates. Anyone up for this style challenge?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 10/03/2008 15:28

People think it's about body type, attitude, etc. but really it's not.

I mean, have you ever seen women dressed like Donatella Versace? They think they look great, but they look mutton dressed as lamb to the rest of us.

Tutter · 10/03/2008 15:30

yes

FrannyandZooey · 10/03/2008 15:30

I don't like the shape
it isn't that you are 40, just it is not a good shape for an adult - it looks too short (I don't mean short skirts aren't ok, just that style should be longer)

otherwise I agree with lou

HuwEdwards · 10/03/2008 15:32

agree with Lou.

Sputnik · 10/03/2008 15:46

Well Topshop have it under "midi and maxi" length so it can't be that short. I'm assuming it's just above knee length. Anybody have a Topshop handy and could pop in?

Hmm, Donatella Versace, Jeremy Clarkson. Possibly not great associations coming up here!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 10/03/2008 15:48

It's classic Mutton Dressed as Lamb when it comes to Donatella.

K, she's slim and looks good for her age, but she's not 20 anymore, it looks naff when a 40+ something wears clothes her daughter does.

Sorry, but it just does, no matter how good a shape she's in.

It's tragic.

Walnutshell · 10/03/2008 15:54

At precisely what age does the skirt in questions turn one into mutton? I'm 32. I have a short denim skirt. I need to know when I will be laughed at. Forewarned and all that.

expatinscotland · 10/03/2008 15:56

If you say it doesn't matter to you, WS, then why ask?

stiffit · 10/03/2008 15:59

Above the knee is fine over 40 but not that skirt ..the stonewashed denim..the uneven fall..

you can buy much nicer things to be a yum mum, chum

Sputnik · 10/03/2008 21:01

Isn't there a difference though between Donatella type muttonness, ie trying to look sexy with tight stuff, flesh exposure etc (which I agree is tragic), and this which I would see more as a light hearted sort of garment for not being too serious in?

OP posts:
Spidermama · 10/03/2008 21:03

I would wear that with nice flat shoes and a vesty type thing. Or with leggings if there's a lumpy knee issue.

Spidermama · 10/03/2008 21:04

I think tight minis are strictly for the young but this one has enough swish for the shapely legged forty something.

Walnutshell · 11/03/2008 19:37

expat - and why not answer?

As I said, forewarned.

newgirl · 11/03/2008 19:43

i know its topshop but i just dont think it looks very up to date

i think if i saw it on a 40 year old i would think laura ashley

especially teamed with nautical striped t shirt

bagism · 11/03/2008 19:52

Looks good, buy it! Nothing wrong with looking cool at 40.

nkf · 11/03/2008 19:55

I think it would look fine with thick tights and boots and a jacket. Not with a skimpy top or anything low necked.

Sputnik · 11/03/2008 20:00

That's possibly why I like it Newgirl . Don't really like anything much around at the moment (haven't chcked out Laura Ashley though.....). Just to clarify, I do not own, or ever will, a nautical striped T-shirt.

I don't like shape...smacks of a 'ra ra' rather. If it was an A line denim skirt, I think you could go short with it. But those flippy bits? Naaah.
