Why do my thick tights always get holes in the toes?

CharlotteBog · 24/10/2023 09:41

Why? They are the right size. I have average feet, no sharp nails.
Without fail all my thick winter tights get holes where the big toe is.
It's bad enough playing around with the toe seam so it doesn't drive me to distraction, but a hole finishes me off.
I am no sock darner so as soon as I sew it up it then becomes and even weaker spot.
Actually maybe it is because I am moving the seam? It annoys me.

Today I am wearing my 180 Denier Thermal Heatgen Plus winky wanky woo ones and they've got a hole in the big toe.

When you find out, I'm all ears. Happens to all my socks, always in the same foot.

madeinmanc · 24/10/2023 09:44

I only seem to get one wear out of tights, sometimes two if I'm lucky 😕

thedevilinablackdress · 24/10/2023 09:46

A thin pair of trainer socks underneath can help prevent

Surely not! Thick woolly or opaque ones at a tenner a pop?

Thank you. I've never thought of that. They don't get rucked up inside I presume.

Happens to me too @CharlotteBog ! I tried the trainer sick thing but they just slipped down and I have to take my tights off to pull them up!

No, just standard 60/100 denier multi pack ones. I dare not buy more expensive ones as I know I will only get one or two wears out of them!

CharlotteBog · 24/10/2023 09:57

It's clearly A Thing. So I shall invent the 'no more toe hole' tight and get rich via Dragon's Den!

Or pull them out through the hole in the toe!

Trim your toenails so the tip of the tights meets flesh of the toe not toenails.

MademoiselleFrenglish · 24/10/2023 10:29

I always wear socks under my tights, usually ankle ones as I wear knee-high boots mostly. Haven't had a hole since!

Bonbon21 · 24/10/2023 10:37

Is this with every pair of shoes/boots?

KnickerlessParsons · 24/10/2023 11:35

I'm the same. It's because my toenails aren't flat. They go up from the base so the tip of the nail is higher than the quick IYSWIM.
I have been known to wear a hole in the tip of my shoes too if they are fabric or thin plastic. I keep my nails very short but it still happens.

DaftQuestionForToday · 24/10/2023 11:40

Nails pressing against shoes, they don't need to be 'sharp' they're just 'hard'

wee footsie socks, close fitting.

Not usually a problem for me

This was me before I discovered snag. For the extra few quid you get months of wear.

CointreauVersial · 24/10/2023 13:19

For me, it's usually a sign that I need to cut my toenails!

hennybeans · 24/10/2023 13:20

I wear only Snag tights and I still get holes in the toes. The rest of the tights are in perfect condition but I get a toe hole maybe after ten wears or so. Dh and dc think it’s hilarious that I always have my big toes sticking out.

I’m going to try the socks underneath thing. I do keep my nails trimmed already.

beetr00 · 24/10/2023 13:24

perhaps these would resolve? 😉

Sandalholidays12 · 24/10/2023 13:25

I was going to suggest cutting your toe nails toe surely it's that if the hole is in the foot part of your tights. Where do you buy your tights? Primark have some thick ones in for around £3.50... I've only wore them once but no holes and I have my toes shellaced all year round.

CharlotteBog · 24/10/2023 13:27

I've pondered what some of you have been saying and I think I've got it!

My feet are quite skinny so if I'm hanging about in my Uggs or other looser fitting shoes I'm raising my toes to keep them on, if you know what I mean.
This will then put pressure on the upper side of the tights.
I will try socks underneath and see if that helps.

Solidarity with all fellow toe hole sufferers!

I'm a runner, my toe nails are NOT long!

OP posts:
madeinmanc · 24/10/2023 13:29

Maybe I could have my toenails removed? 🤔🤣

Seriously, are you guys tall? I'm not really tall but not short either, I'm thinking maybe the legs are not really long enough and maybe it puts strain on the toe area.

I am tall, but my tights are not too short. Too long if anything - lord knows how shorter women manage.

I find the M&S ones particularly bad. I don't buy there 60 or 80 denier ones anymore.
