Why do my thick tights always get holes in the toes?

Why? They are the right size. I have average feet, no sharp nails.
Without fail all my thick winter tights get holes where the big toe is.
It's bad enough playing around with the toe seam so it doesn't drive me to distraction, but a hole finishes me off.
I am no sock darner so as soon as I sew it up it then becomes and even weaker spot.
Actually maybe it is because I am moving the seam? It annoys me.

Today I am wearing my 180 Denier Thermal Heatgen Plus winky wanky woo ones and they've got a hole in the big toe.

I find the M&S ones particularly bad. I don't buy there 60 or 80 denier ones anymore.

their not there 🙄

I’ve never had this happen and I usually buy M&S tights. I always buy size L even though going by the pack I should be size S. Maybe that’s the reason?

BaronessBomburst · 05/11/2023 12:07

Thin trainer socks over the tights work just as well as it provides a layer of padding and reduces the friction between the toenail and the shoe.
I only wear them under my tights when wearing lacy tights or fishnets.
who am I kidding, I've not worn fishnets in years

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/11/2023 13:40

I've never had this problem... but I'm very short in the leg so tights aren't tight on my toes. Maybe you need to buy longer in the leg tights?

Nochoiceleft · 05/11/2023 14:17

I am like this with socks. Even my thick walking socks don’t last more than a few months. My toe nails are always cut short. My big toe seems to bend upwards and my toenail also grows upwards.
I also put holes in any running shoes.
I just put it down to having weird shaped toes 😁

DinosaurOfFire · 05/11/2023 15:04

I have this problem, so I wear plain black leggings and normal socks instead. This only works if you tend to wear boots rather than shoes though!

HippoStraw · 05/11/2023 15:14

This happens to me. With socks too, and sometimes shoes! I think my toes curve up slightly and put more pressure on the tights or socks. One wear sometimes!

Doubledodecahedron · 05/11/2023 15:14

I suffer with this too! I have very long thin feet, skinny ankles and long legs and tights are a nightmare, as a larger size means baggy/wrinkly ankles and crotch Blush. I'm now wondering if wrapping a plaster or micropore tape round my big toes might be an alternative to socks underneath!

We sound similar. I always used to get L for my height (5'8") but I am slim and found the baggy gusset not very comfortable. So, now I get medium, which fit much better....apart from the big toe situation!

As @DinosaurOfFire, I wear footless tights and socks with my boots. Not often I wear tights and shoes though.

kitsuneghost · 05/11/2023 18:45

Me too
It's the way I walk. I walk forward into my toes.
Do sliders cut your feet too?

SomethingFun · 05/11/2023 18:54

I think it’s the shoes rather than the feet. I’ve some ankle boots that always result in hole in the toe and I think it’s because your foot is angled downwards so all the pressure is on the end of your foot on the tight. I wear trainer socks over tights and it stops it - I assume because they are thicker.

Mumaway · 05/11/2023 19:09

I have 'tippy up toes' so this has always been an issue. I cut my nails absolutely as short as I can and then use an emery board to smooth them.
Once you darn your tights, put a small amount of nail varnish on and it might help stop any more runs

This, I am a size 8-10 and always buy large, otherwise they break at the toes.

I'm the same. It's because my toenails aren't flat. They go up from the base so the tip of the nail is higher than the quick IYSWIM.
I have been known to wear a hole in the tip of my shoes too if they are fabric or thin plastic. I keep my nails very short but it still happens.

This is me also. I always wear a hole in my trainers after a while.

Yep!
And also yep to wearing through thin shoes or trainers too. Double whammy. It's very annoying and expensive!
