What winter parka shall I buy? Didrikson or similar?

I need a warm winter parka. Happy to pay a bit more for something that will look good and be warm. I am short and slim and don’t want to look like the Michelin man!!

In the past I had a pretty good parka from Uniqlo buy thinking of spending a bit more. Maybe something like the Didrikson bente parka?

i was also looking at this seasalt one but would prefer black and also not so sure about it - potentially frumpy?

Any thoughts on these ones or others? Thank you!

I can't comment on that particular Didrikson but I have one and it's fab. There's a other thread with people needing a new winter coat after 7 years - mine Didrikson is as warm and as waterproof as when I bought it - coats ought to last 10+ years surely ?

cwigley · 13/10/2023 20:09

I've got a didriksons knee length coat that's been discontinued now, but it's been a great coat. I have my eye on this one for this year. I've tried it on, I love it.

WhereAreWeNow · 13/10/2023 20:10

Didriksons coats are really good. Mine has lasted well and is v warm and waterproof.

ThreeB · 13/10/2023 20:14

I have a Dridrikson and a Jack Wolfskin and I love both of them. The Jack Wolfskin one is lighter in weight but the Dridikson one is sooooo cozy. The JW one has been worn this week but the D one probably won't come out until the temperatures properly drop

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2023 20:32

I have an earlier version of that Didrickson parka and it's amazingly warm and waterproof. I wear it for long dog walks. I also wash and re proof it and it comes up brilliantly.
Quite heavy though.

Nikee20 · 13/10/2023 20:38

Defo the thread for me…can you please stop spending my money!!

Notcontent · 13/10/2023 21:19

@Notonthestairs what is the sizing like? Does it come up big?

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 13/10/2023 22:17

I bought big because I wanted to wear layers - but I'm not exaggerating to say I could wear a t-shirt, stick on my parka and go out in snow. I didn't need the layers or the larger size.

My coat is still in the loft for now but will see if I can fish it out this weekend.

HappyHedgehog247 · 13/10/2023 22:20

I ended up with a Didrikson parka by chance having not known the brand and 5 years in so far and it still looks like new. It's my winter coat, quite heavy but warm and dry!

Notjustamum10 · 13/10/2023 22:24

I’m looking forward to winter to wear my coat Didrikson again! I’m tall and find it is a great brand for long slimmer shapes, and although completely waterproof, doesn’t ‘swoosh’ or rustle like other coats I’ve had.

covetingthepreciousthings · 13/10/2023 22:25

I've got a Didriksons Leja long parka -

Love it, I'm short but love that it's long as it keeps legs dry and warm through winter.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/10/2023 07:07

@Notonthestairs i need to wash mine but don't think it will fit in the machine. How do you reproof it?

Peeeas · 14/10/2023 07:11

I have the seasalt Janelle in green. Love it and it comes in petite so I don't look drowned by it!

Ikeameatballs · 14/10/2023 08:17

I’m on my third winter with a Didrikson’s Parka and I love it. I bought a child’s one as the XS adult was too big (165cm and size 6-8) and it’s perfect.

anatara · 14/10/2023 09:34

Where stocks Didrikson as I’d like to try on being a shortie?!

AreYouShittingMe · 14/10/2023 10:16

@anatara our local Go Outdoors has a couple of Didrikson coats. Great coats, I love mine

SoftSheen · 14/10/2023 10:18

I really love my Didrikson's parka. Previously had a Barbour parka but the Didrikson's is warmer, generously sized and totally waterproof, and just seems better made overall.

Notonthestairs · 14/10/2023 13:41

Ok so I have retrieved the coat out of the loft. its a 40.
I am 5ft 4 inches, size 14 with a large chest. I bought extra big to accomodate bust and to be able to add layers but you really won't need layers so don't do what I did! Tshirt and coat and you are good to go.
Zip starts around knees so it is very long but it means my legs are warm and dry.
I might look and feel like I am wearing a duvet but I dont care.

Washing - washing on 40, slow spin, dry on the line if possible but note it takes DAYS to dry around the hood and cuffs. The washing machine hates it as it is so heavy when wet - but I get quite sweaty (because its so warm) and worry about smelling like sheep.

Reproofing - I've used all sorts of freebie reproofers given out at the end of half marathons but as I have stopped running I'm going to try Nikwax. DH uses the Nikwax spray for his gear.

LimePi · 14/10/2023 14:29

I love my Didriskon coat :)

NashEnquirer · 14/10/2023 14:37

I have a 10-yr old khaki Didriksons Taylor parka that I absolutely love - warm and waterproof but not bulky, detachable fur round the hood, loads of pockets (Inc Napoleon/chest pockets), spacious good - just an all-round great coat.

I also have a black one which I think is the Erica a pp linked to above - also lovely but a bit puffier and maybe not quite as bombproof. The Taylor is deffo my apocalypse coat.

The Leja that someone linked to above is gorgeous!

WhereAreWeNow · 14/10/2023 14:41

@Notonthestairs I've just got it out of a cool low spin wash. I can see what you mean about it taking a while to dry!
Label says to iron on low heat to reproof so I'll give that a go.

Notcontent · 14/10/2023 17:03

Thank you @Notonthestairs and everyone else. I think I will just have to order one and try it.

I've never seen them in any stores as struggled when I wanted to get mine, I think you can return online to most stores but realise it's a bit faffier !

I used New Forest clothing online store to buy mine.
