Anyone else? Have you managed to find any products that you are able to use? I am gutted

@Lalalaletmeexplain talked about this on Instagram recently. She said it happened when she didn't give her nails a break from the gel every couple of months. What has your nail tech said?

SparklingLime · 09/10/2023 20:35

If it was Gel Bottle, then contact them: www.thegelbottle.com/help-centre?help_q=300

Swollen round the edges and red? Yes I developed a gel nail reaction 18 months ago. Took my nails off and I still have it, it comes and go periodically and makes no difference if I have gel on or not, or what type of gel or whether it's me that does my nails or a professional. There's no correlation at all. It's sort of like cold sores, once you get the reaction you're stuck with it. It is a known thing I think. My fingers swell round the nail and go red and a bit sore. I try and wear rubber gloves to avoid hands in water too often and chemicals, and douse my hands in sweet almond oil on a night. The only 2 times it has ever gone completely in the last 18 months have been during periods of extreme stress (my husband almost died twice this year) and then it went all together, only to return a week after he left hospital on both occasions. Bizarre.

Biab has a builder gel in a bottle.

This is a troll - we're taking this down now.

Actually, scratch that. They must be massively on the defensive as it's an increasing problem:

My nails are exactly like those in that video after gels not BIAB. Had them done professionally only 3 times. Nails ruined. Seperated from nail bed. Never having gels again Sad

Lndnmummy · 09/10/2023 22:04

Yes its the gel bottle I have been using (very good salons too). I can not believe it. I have had my nails done for years and years. Its only for the last few
months its become a huge problem. I am not sure how to get them off either as can't imagine putting these sore cuticles anywhere near acetone. They are so sore already. Sorry to everyone else having this.

The salon was not very helpful at all :(

It happened to me too after my salon switched to using Gel Bottle BIAB. Apparently, Gel Bottle is extremely high in HEMA and that's what causes the reaction. Four of my nails completely separated from the nail bed. I had to have them all removed for c.9 months and then, when they'd completely grown back, I went back to old fashioned acrylics. I've had acrylics back on
since June and my nails are absolutely fine, as long as I avoid HEMA heavy products (and avoid Gel Bottle completely).

Lndnmummy · 09/10/2023 22:55

Thanks everyone. It is really helpful to hear everyones experiences. Will get them off although no idea how and then let them heal. Then try something else.

I have been reading alot this evening and it is crazy how common this is. I had no idea. I would have stayed clear of BIAB if I had known.

Hmm, I’m booked in for a gel pedicure tomorrow — it’s something I very rarely do. Might give it a miss now 😕

JohnNolan · 10/10/2023 06:55

I do my own nails and only use Mylee - it's HEMA free. They do BIAB & it's great.

Lookatmytoes · 10/10/2023 06:59

I suspect Mylee of being a problem- cheaper end and Chinese so fewer regs?

Mylee is one of the brands that have been associayed the most with allergic reactions.

Is this the allergy that can cause problems with dental procedures as well? I was in the news a few months back.

Yes 😓

pollyroo · 10/10/2023 09:29

I would be interested to know whether these reactions are forming after using either gel ish or OPI gel products? There seems to be far too many very cheap shitty knock off type gel nail products flying around & when people go to these salons where the nail techs are Vietnamese or Thai do they even know which products they are using?

If you search eBay / Amazon you will see loads of these unknown brands putting god knows what in the nail polish, all extremely cheap & too readily available.

I've been doing my gel nails at home for about 8 years now, I use only Gelish & Opi products from a certified seller & fortunately I have not encountered any of these problems.

God only knows these cheap products what is in them ? These cheap pop up naill salons using cheap whatever products are everywhere now Hmm

RudsyFarmer · 10/10/2023 09:34

Lndnmummy · 10/10/2023 09:25

Yes 😓

Shit I’m so sorry. Do all the research you can and just stay away from it. Honestly your health is worth more than this aesthetic.

FayCarew · 10/10/2023 09:37

@pollyroo , salons where the nail techs are Vietnamese or Thai
Why is this? There are a few nail bars in my town and they seem to be staffed by youngish far-eastern men.

Theraffarian · 10/10/2023 09:44

Also worth getting the allergy updated on your GP records , hopefully won’t effect you but it causes issues for people with asthma, diabetes and also the same chemical is in bone cement used for things like hip replacements .

BluebellsForest · 10/10/2023 09:47

The Gel Bottle who started BIAB and have triggered loads of allergies are UK-based and pretty large, @pollyroo

www.thegelbottle.com/about-us

It does seem that there are more issues with newer products, but OPI etc may have reformulated to try to keep market share?

Sudden allergy to BIAB nails :(
pollyroo · 10/10/2023 09:50

@FayCarew

Yes.

Whether the salon nail techs be Thai, Vietnamese or young Middle Eastern men do you know what products these cheap pop up salons use?
