Just wanted to show people what the allergy could look like. 😓

Yep developed an allergy from BIAB, now can’t have anything with methacrylate on them. Gutted because my nails were getting so nice and healthy looking and now back to bitten stumps 😂 I tried 8months later and the allergy is still there. Tbh it’s ruined my nail beds completely

peachgreen · 11/10/2023 09:38

Yes, this happened to me. One of my nails has a permanent ridge in it now. Would never get gels done again.

Lndnmummy · 11/10/2023 10:50

I can not believe how common this is🤯

could possibly try doing dip nails at home. I don’t have an allergy, but I found after a few months of having gel, my nails were so soft and fragile when they were bare, so decided to stop them (it was also getting expensive!!)
I bought a dip nail set and they advertise saying that they have added vitamins and make nails stronger, and having had mine for around 5 months they really are stronger and back to being nails. Apparently they have also been good for those with allergies, as lots of ppl on Facebook have commented about the allergies.

Can you link to which set you have please?

I use GlamRDip. They almost always have a special offer of some sort on their starter set, and have a big social media presence. And they actually have pretty good customer service too as they have always replied with a day of me contacting them.

BluebellsForest · 12/10/2023 00:26

This just gets worse. I googled GlamRDip and found out about 'dip flu'!

No thanks.

I stopped having gels after a bad experience at a new salon a couple of years ago but then noticed I had a permanent ridge on one nail. I couldn't grow it to any length as it would split as soon as it cleared my fingertip, and I tried a few different strengtheners but nothing worked.
In the summer I started taking a Biotin supplement, primarily to try and thicken my hair, it's been amazing for my nails and the ridge has gone hair is still shit, thanks menopause

Hi, would you be able to link to the supplements you are taking?

Yes, I noticed that poster ignored my post about the UK-based company, The Gel Bottle Inc.

The woman who made the TikTok video said this product helped her, and it does seem to have a lot more helpful ingredients than a standard cuticle oil.

Hey could you link to the tiktok please?

I don't think this is as reassuring as they think it is...

😝 So less than 499,999, then? How comforting.

gliitetbels BIAB is hema free. Might be worth a try for future reference. My cousins developed a hema allergy and has been using this with no issues since.

I bought glitterbels as soon as I realised there was an allergic reaction. Sadly I had a bad reaction to them too. There are other acrylate allergens outside of the HEMA disclaimer. Your cousin was lucky, it is extremely rare to be able to use other products even those called 'Hema free'. I wish I had known this before I shelled out a small fortune.

A couple of months ago my nail salon posted some cryptic messages about The Gel Bottle being in controversy and linked to a statement on The Gel Bottle’s instagram. I’m sure this instagram post referenced allergies.

I can’t be bothered to try and find it however the reason this sticks in my head is I had a weird reaction to BIAB at the same time. One of my fingers was bleeding where my cuticle meets my nail, and most of my cuticles were swollen. It was like my cuticle had separated from my nail, I could literally pull my skin back and it looked gory.

anyway it all looked better after some ibuprofen and sleep, but really scared me. I switched to a new nail technician and have been okay since. Still an odd experience though

BeretRaspberry · 12/10/2023 21:20

@contactme

I’d be really careful if you’re still having gels. What you describe sounds like an allergy and you will be more sensitive than you were before. Generally these things escalate.

I’m lucky I didn’t have an allergy but gels (mainly BIAB) absolutely wrecked my nails.

My sister also had an issue with it. Her nails started coming away from the nail bed and were sore. (Pic added). She went to the GP who thought it was fungal but the tests didn’t show that. That said, her doc gave her the medication for a fungal infection (after blood tests because apparently the meds are potent and can cause other issues). Now, I know fungal infections aren’t specifically caused by the BIAB but it only started after she had been having it applied for a couple of months, having never had an issue before in her life so it’s a bit too much of a coincidence for me to believe it’s completely unrelated.

I’ve posted about her before but I really recommend The Salon Life on YouTube. She has so much information for free on how to care for natural nails (even after damage and issues caused by gels) and make them strong and healthy using low cost products.

Awful to see so many people have been affected by this!

I went through a period of having BIAB (The Gel Bottle) from a reputable salon for almost a year with no breaks in between. When I finally decided to give my nails a break they were ruined - so thin and flaky, took a good couple of months to get better.

I don't know if mine was an allergic reaction as I had no 'lifting' of the nails but it was enough to put me off having gels again. It's a shame as I loved having them done and they felt so strong!

Lndnmummy · 12/10/2023 22:26

I can not believe how common this is. I had no idea. I spoke to a lovely gp today. She has prescribed really strong antihistamine and a stronger cortisone cream. She also put in my notes to show my husband that I can't touch any detergent or cleaning products. That cheered me up.

I have this! Not from BIAB though but just your bog standard home gel nail kit I used for years before I had a sudden allergic reaction. Now can't use any gel products at all, I wouldn't even attempt it. I've gone back to ordinary nail paint, and have some ok stuff (Super Gel Rimmel is good in pale colours with a top coat, I often get a week's wear out of it and it's not a gel product, just a nail polish). It is a bit gutting, I loved the look of gel nails but absolutely not worth the health risk.
