Stylish people, help! Could I ever pull this dress off?

I just saw a lady in this dress and she looked amazing. Teamed with cowboy boots and perfectly accessorised. She was slim, about 50, lovely long, curly hair. She looked cool and stylish and the colours just shone out. Basically, I reckon she’d look great in a bin bag.

I am 45, size 12, short and slight and all tummy, not that glamorous. Short bobbed brown hair, quite high contrast colouring (although fading, I fear), I try my best with outfits, but doubt I ever look cool, and my instinct would be to pop a cardi on top of it got nippy (don’t worry, I know that’s not chic.)

Is it worth even trying with a dress like this? How could a not very cool tummysome lady pull it off? https://www.frenchconnection.com/products/avery-burn-out-midi-dress-toasted-almond

Order it, try it on with the right undies and boots, put a photo on here and bask in the compliments. It looks lovely.
I'm not stylish, but the dress is

Lavender14 · 07/10/2023 14:53

How short are you? I think it's gorgeous, and I think the tie at the waist would be really flattering. If you're short I'd only wear it with heels. Probably calf length heeled boots. Would be lovely with a leather jacket too.

Antst · 07/10/2023 15:02

I think you could look great. Will you have the same look as the woman in the photo? Nope. And that's completely fine.

The only thing I'd watch out for would be the amount of fabric at the tummy area. If there's so much that it hides your shape, just get it tailored so it's a bit more streamlined in that area. If money is a concern, take it to a tailor and ask for it to be pinned around the waist area, then sew it yourself. Good luck!

Good luck.

SM4713 · 07/10/2023 15:05

The model is 5ft 10, so if you are short, it will be a maxi length on you! All you can do is order it and try it. I also wear spanx type things underneath if you want to smooth look out.

I am a similar shape to you and I look ridiculous in high neck dresses because they make me look bigger. V neck dresses look better on those with fuller bosoms.

Me too! I look blousy and my boobs look odd. The lady I saw had unbuttoned the neckline and wore a gold necklace which worked well.

I’m 5 foot 4 so not tiny. The dress was longer on the lady I saw wearing it . But her boots did have a small heel.
I am not sure I even own heeled boots any more! But you are right, they would work well.

Hmm. Tall and slender, probably. On the short/fuller side possibly not.

LoobyDop · 07/10/2023 15:55

The dress is very pretty, and I don’t see why you’d need to be some kind of supermodel to pull it off. I also think we could all learn something from the Gen Zs who seem happy enough to wear whatever they want without hang ups about whether they are good enough.

FamBae · 07/10/2023 16:08

I'm an apple shape and tie belts do not work with me, I find an Obi belt looks better and adds a little originality. It is a stunning dress.

SurprisedWithAHorse · 07/10/2023 16:12

It's a great dress for tall, slim, willowy people (what isn't?). If you're curvy or busty, forget it.

Saverage · 07/10/2023 16:24

It's a really nice dress. The model is 5ft 10 though so mentally add another 6 inches to the length on you and also the sleeves are really long.

Finlesswonder · 07/10/2023 16:26

Honestly? No!

bonzaitree · 07/10/2023 16:31

Im just not that keen on the dress OP- it doesn’t look good on the model, let alone a mere mortal.

DesparatePragmatist · 07/10/2023 16:35

All I see is polyester flounce, so anyone wearing it would be rocking a kind of gypsy festival vibe rather than sophisticated. On which basis, I'd say wear it if you like it. Even the model doesn't look elegant, although she does look comfortable which is fab. But if you do want to look cool or glamorous (words from your OP) I don't think you or anyone would in a flowery loose billowy dress, go for a blazer, flowing shirt and cool shoes for that with lipstick that suits your colours.

(But then, I don't get this look, so feel free to ignore!)

Idonotthinkso · 07/10/2023 16:38

It’s viscose/nylon with a polyester lining. I would think it would feel horrible to wear. The colours are lovely though so try it and see how you look.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 07/10/2023 16:42

I love it OP. Order it and see how it looks or you'll never know.

GreyTS · 07/10/2023 16:43

I'm small and slight and there is way too much material, I'd drown in it, you'd be better off with curvy hips and boobs, plus the pattern is too overwhelming. And the tie belt is awful on anyone with a thicker waist, all together no I can't imagine it will work for you. But try it on, no harm, sometimes flattering isn't what you're looking for

lliij8 · 07/10/2023 16:47

I think it could work if, as you say, you have high contrast colouring. (I don't, and could not pull it off). It just seems like too much fabric on a shorter woman. Might look like a little armchair.

I'd be tempted to have it tailored a bit shorter, with shorter sleeves... or maybe just find a dress more like that.

Aftertheharvest · 07/10/2023 16:49

If it's the pattern you like they have top and shirt version in same print.

Ilovemycatalot · 07/10/2023 17:48

It’s an awful dress OP sorry

Helenahandkart · 07/10/2023 18:00

5’4” is average height for a woman in the UK. You’re not short, and there’s no reason you couldn’t wear this.
I’m the same height as you and wear loads of dresses this length, usually with trainers or flat boots because I don’t like heels.
I don’t look like a model, but I Iook good enough.

AutumnAuntie · 07/10/2023 18:17

I’m five feet one and have loads of dresses like this, they are midaxi on me.
