Just that really.
I'm going on a mini break and have no idea what to pack and wondered if anyone has any suggestions. Is it really cold?

Lots of layers, hat and gloves. Walking boots.
It will be chilly. Might get a light snow shower or rain.
Probably won't go above 5 degrees.
Krakow is lovely. Enjoy!

weleasewoderick23 · 29/09/2023 17:34

Thankyou!
I've got loads of jumpers etc but I might get a thermal vest too.

We've just come back from a fabulous 4 days there.. it was 26 degrees! The most amazing place

Bubblesatbathtime · 29/09/2023 17:37

I went one year at end of October. Loved it and would love to go back some day. First day was really cold and was really worried that I didn't have enough clothes, however the following days the sun came out and it was lovely. Next time though I'll take winter wear.

I'm really looking forward to it. I plan to do quite a bit of walking and exploring.
I can't wait!

Lots of warm layers and boots

Viviennethebeautiful · 29/09/2023 17:39

Definitely layers. It will be cold outside but many of the restaurants and bars are quaintly adapted. Lots of small interconnected rooms, absolutely lovely but can get warm when full.
it’s fabulous

Have you googled the temperature or do you want some different sort of info?

No I haven't. I just wanted to what was best to pack as the weather seems very changeable according to pp. I don't want to rock up like the Michelin man if it won't be any colder than here.

Well maybe google it? 😂

We walked 40 miles over 4 days

I always think this type of thread is really helpful to give an impression of how a city actually feels. There's more to it than the bare average temperature. Yes, anyone can google, but as pp said, you might find that it's cold one day then the sun comes out the next.

I also like to find out whether it's one of the countries where all public buildings are heated to the max as soon as autumn sets in - eg Germany - which leads me to take one thick coat that I can quickly remove instead of lots of layers, cos I overheat easily.

Probably layers as pp's have suggested and a hat and gloves. A decent coat. If you are up for a scare check out Lost Souls Alley just off the main square. It is a sort of haunted house that we went to on Halloween night. My god, so scary but so much fun too.

LaCerbiatta · 29/09/2023 19:45

I went in September and it was 5-10C . Never been so cold!!! This was before google and easily checking the weather forecast and I had naively packed for summer!

So definitely changeable weather!

I've been in late October - we had beautiful bright blue clear skies but it was chilly and dropped very cold at night. Uniqlo heat tech layers are good, take your sunglasses in case it's bright. Really comfortable shoes as you'll walk loads though the public transport is great. Lots of the bars, cafes and restaurants are tucked away in courtyards and below ground level - we loved exploring these. Many have lovely heated outdoor courtyard seating areas. You'll also keep nicely toasty warm with regular shots of vodka and warm cherry liqueur from Pijana wiśnia - yes, a bit of a tourist trap but perfect to warm up! It's a fabulous city, hope you have a great time. I took a two in one Columbia coat that had a down coat inner with a zip on/zip off waterproof overcoat - I only needed the down layer during the day but always both in the evening. If you're there on All Saints Day I cannot recommend visiting the cemetery enough - we were advised to do this by our food tour guide and were so glad we did. It was such a special evening - we went to Rakowicki Cemetery and the lights, the warmth and welcome of people sharing food, drink and song. It has stuck in my mind ever since (photo to give you an idea).

If you visit Auschwitz, wrap up very warm it's exposed and you will walk lots - it's an incredibly moving, deeply affecting experience and a really important place to visit, I think.

you really will need a puffer jacket not just a thermal vest on top of a cardigan. I am Polish, trust me!

GettingStuffed · 29/09/2023 23:01

We went in January, I've never been so cold in my life as the day we went to the castle, it's a wind funnel.

I agree with layers, I wore maxi skirts with leggings in the evening

Doggymummar · 29/09/2023 23:04

I'm going on 6th November, I figure it's just same as UK temp really. I need to get a pair of winter boots but otherwise UK stuff for winter will do

EllaPaella · 30/09/2023 08:17

I'm also going the first week of November and had assumed it would be similar weather to the UK. Having read this I will make sure to take a very warm coat!

AnnaMagnani · 30/09/2023 08:21

It's really cold.

Went in September - first stop was shopping for more jumpers.

Inspirationpending · 30/09/2023 08:25

Also going beginning of November
Hadnt even thought about weather & clothing yet so thanks for this thread

ladeluge · 30/09/2023 08:37

From bitter experience I never travel in Winter without a thermal beanie hat and a soft warm scarf or snood and gloves. A long sleeve t shirt or jumper, zip up light fleece (easy to remove) and puffer or down jacket completes the daily wandering outfit! Footwear and socks/tights of your choice.

A backpack for putting discarded layers in is essential too. Krakow is great, enjoy.

Icedlatteplease · 30/09/2023 08:47

Really not the same as UK.

We went last week of October. Beginning of the week we were out in the evening in jumpers (thermals underneath but still just jumpers on top). By the end of the week it was all down layers, wolly hats and gloves. The next week was forecast snow and the tour guides were all putting their snow tyres on.

As other people have mentioned auschwitz is brutally cold. The windchill factor is massive on and around the river, up the Castle or at auschwitz. Its worth thinking about whether your layers are WIND resistant not just cold. I was warmer in a down coat with wind proof waterproof coat on top than DD in just a super warm superdry coat.

That had fabulous wool products out there. In the markets we upgraded DD scarf and socks, ( bought a beautifully wool blanket at remarkably cheap price).

We took a small fold away holdall to pile all the warm stuff in when we weren't wearing it, in restaurants etc.

Take sunglasses the sun can be bright.

We were still often sat out in the evening despite the cold. The square was often lovely outside in the evening.
