Is the material of this cardigan from JL any good?

40% acrylic, 30% nylon, 20% wool, 10% alpaca

I really want to replace a gorgeous cardi I had that contained Cashmere. I got it in the sale at a bargain price and I can't really afford full price cashmere to replace it.

I need to be warm but hopefully stylish. I work in my annexe, which can get chilly in winter.

The acrylic and nylon content will probably mean it's not very warm.

I really like this one on TKMAXX but its a bit pricey at £99.

@MinnieMouse0 really nice but only 50 cm long. I am short but that would cut me in half . I have one i like already at 59cms so 50 is way too short

@ihatethecold OK here's another offering (but also a mix...) La Redoute. 50% alpaca, 35% polyamide, 15% wool. £65 but save 35% with code SAVE.

Comes in beige, ivory, grey marl. Sadly not green

Always worth a search on eBay - have several wool cardis from there in the last year or so - like new!!

I find acrylic mix knitwear to be a bad investment because they bobble and get fluffy very quickly, and unlike wool can't really be tidied up again. Wool knits on the other hand can easily be de-bobbled with a wool comb and will last much longer.

lindyloo57 · 25/09/2023 17:12

I wouldn't buy anything with acrylic in, it will go bobbly very quickly

Darklane · 25/09/2023 17:40

Acrylic goes hard too after a few washes, much better to have natural fibres unless you’re allergic. Woolovers are very good & pure wool cheaper than the one you were looking at. That’s very expensive for what it is.

ihatethecold · 25/09/2023 20:40

Thanks everyone. I’ll definitely avoid the JL one I linked and will take a longer look at the links and suggestions.

I hate nylon, and don't buy things with acrylic. Personally it's merino or cotton for me.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/09/2023 22:01

A small amount of nylon is useful in terms of stopping elbows wearing through.

I can't remember when I last had an elbow wear through.

ihatethecold · 26/09/2023 06:41

For me I notice its holes in the armpit. Probably because I’m yanking a cardi on and putting pressure on that part of it.

Nothing particularly wrong with that composition. I’m sure it would be nice and soft but for that price or thereabouts you might get something better from other places like Woolovers as others have suggested. Also it probably wouldn’t be made in China.

smallshinybutton · 26/09/2023 09:41

I don't know why they bothered using alpaca if it's just going to be acrylic mixed with it

ihatethecold · 26/09/2023 09:51

@smallshinybutton do you think its just a selling ploy? but actually just creates an overpriced inferior product.... but the label says Wool on it?

Yes I think that's it exactly 70% nonwool 20% wool, 10% alpaca. It's a selling ploy so people can grab a bit of the alpaca pie but at a reasonable price.

Whistles have some good options and a lot seem to be reduced just now! They sell on John Lewis, Selfridges etc if not in stock on their own website.

That’s gorgeous, I’m so tempted.
