Is the material of this cardigan from JL any good?

40% acrylic, 30% nylon, 20% wool, 10% alpaca

I really want to replace a gorgeous cardi I had that contained Cashmere. I got it in the sale at a bargain price and I can't really afford full price cashmere to replace it.

I need to be warm but hopefully stylish. I work in my annexe, which can get chilly in winter.

For me, acrylic always bobbles and usually itches.

WhereAreWeNow · 25/09/2023 09:09

For that price, I think I'd rather get lambswool from somewhere like Uniqlo or Woolovers. I find things like alpaca and mohair quite itchy and I don’t like the feel of acrylic. Having said that, Uniqlo 'soufflé yarn' is synthetic but very soft and warm. It doesn't wash/last well though.

Lentilweaver · 25/09/2023 09:12

Yes, I have 100% merino and lambswool from Uniqlo, M and S, and Woolovers, and they have all lasted well. Though maybe not very exciting. Any synthetic yarn looks terrible after a couple of washes.

Saxendi · 25/09/2023 09:15

It's really expensive for an acrylic mix, it will go bobbly.
Uniqlo for cashmere or merino wool a better option at similar price, any mixed fabrics in jumpers usually bobble badly.

ihatethecold · 25/09/2023 09:19

Thanks for the link @Lentilweaver
I want something more boxy rather than neat and tidy if that makes sense.

I have loads of cardigans already that look like that ( not expensive ones ) so i'd like something a bit more on trend.

I’d order it and see how it feels, then send it back if I wasn’t convinced. It’s a really nice style. There’s wool and alpaca in there too, so it might be ok? Most of my trusted warmest jumpers are lambs wool or merino or similar, but I’ve got a couple with acrylic mix and it makes them less heavy, some nice and warm and some less so.

Talipesmum · 25/09/2023 09:24

JL returns are pretty easy as well.

Lentilweaver · 25/09/2023 09:24

Fair enough. Woolovers is not known for its trendiness!
I like that Uniqlo stripy one @WhereAreWeNow

Cantonet · 25/09/2023 09:36

@ihatethecold look on Tk Maxx online.
I've just bought a lovely Cashmere Cardigan for that price from a very pricy brand. Or failing that eBay. I buy M&S Cashmere new from there when it's a reasonable price. Or try the Nearly New Cashmere Company.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/09/2023 09:39

Other Stories are good at this sort of stuff. But their site is down at the moment.

chouxfleur · 25/09/2023 09:44

I have ordered a couple of things from Bibico (not knitwear, mind you) and they have been great quality, with an emphasis on natural fibres.

TheFeistyFeminist · 25/09/2023 09:54

I wouldn't be able to touch it, as alpaca and mohair both set my skin on edge. They are fluffy and will potentially bobble really quickly.

A close alternative might be something like this...

https://www.whistles.com/product/184971.html?istCompanyId=d1d2f30b-0b0e-49ba-b0a8-8d58b49ea1b4&istFeedId=49ad2f42-8f7d-4601-aa76-c1e7224b47b8&istItemId=rxqwiwlwx&istBid=t&cqsrc=googleeads&cqcmp=19164074637&cqqterm=&cqplac=&cqqnet=x&cqplt=gp&utmmsource=google&utmmedium=cpc&utmmcampaign=19164074637&utmcontent=&utmmterm=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI16ogbHFgQMVjsftCh1Hiw7uEAQYFSABEgLEavDD_BwE

But for this type of basic I would be looking at Marks, Boden, Uniqlo.

friskybivalves · 25/09/2023 09:56

This is 70% merino and 30% cashmere on tk maxx... you could always change the buttons for something a bit chunkier?

I like acrylic, am probably the only person on here that does. It seems to stay soft. However I can't wear wool or alpaca so always look for acrylic. Nylon causes static and feels unpleasant so I avoid that.

ihatethecold · 25/09/2023 10:37

@friskybivalves
can you link it if possible?

@ihatethecold I am absolutely useless at fancy artful embedded links but here hopefully is a clunker one. It seems to be available in all sizes atm.

@Cantonet I love BrandAlley but oh lord the amount they charge for shipping and also for Returns is off the scale. You have to be really sure you are going to love it.

I really like this one on TKMAXX but its a bit pricey at £99.

@MinnieMouse0 really nice but only 50 cm long. I am short but that would cut me in half . I have one i like already at 59cms so 50 is way too short
