19year old dd, what to wear for a wedding

Just that really. We have a family wedding in two weeks, dh's brother. Dd (19) lives in jeans and trainers, she's very sporty, quite a tomboy but does wear skirts going out or in the summer, or dresses to eg a uni ball.

She had thought she could wear a dress from one of her balls but wearing an evening dress isn't really right. So she's really stuck, a
Googling "wedding guest dress" throws up options which feel way too formal for her. She is very busty (28g) which complicates things. She's also very frugal, hates the thought of buying something that won't get a lot of wear.

DHs family do weddings very traditionally, think lots of outfits from Coast with everything matching so I don't want her to feel out of place, but also want her to feel like herself. Does anyone have any suggestions of what type of thing would be appropriate but not too formal? I don't think I'm being much help to her at the moment.

Would she wear a jumpsuit?

OwlMother · 22/09/2023 20:44

That's a thought, I'll add that to the searches.

Weddings are far less formal than they once were in my experience.

A dress that you would/could wear for dinner in a nice restaurant would be fine.

A uni ball dress that is knee length could also be ok.

At 19 she has lots of flexibility it just depends how it is styled. New look/ river island would be my first place to look.

Vinted is your friend. There are loads of wedding type outfits on there. Try using "wedding guest" as a search term.

Mountpleasant49 · 22/09/2023 20:56

i got a similar one, but blue, for DD (18)

Could one of her ball dresses be altered to a different length?

How about a colourful suit with a pretty shirt/blouse/top?

Lilsoph · 22/09/2023 21:11

What about a trouser suit that could be later worn as separates. Not a formal suit, wide leg or slim leg trousers with a smoking jacket style. Could be matching or plain trousers and patterned jacket. Velvet is a luxurious fabric for a wedding. Could wear a silk vest or t-shirt type top underneath jacket.

Fat face? Zara?

NatashaDancing · 22/09/2023 21:15

For starters I'd not search "wedding guest dresses" as that will throw up some horrors.

OwlMother · 22/09/2023 21:15

I think we have left it too late to do anything with her ball dresses.

She'll like the idea of Vinted, she hates fast fashion and seems to only shop on Depop. Separates are a good thought.

That is so true. I spent ages in the summer trying to find something suitable and they were all generic bland synthetic nightmares

Trouser suit like this, with a waistcoat. This ne is PLT.

My 19yr old daughter, also busty wore a gorgeous blue sparkly suit with a plain top underneath- she looked fab and as others say anything goes these days not all ladies wore dress up dresses etc

Mrsjayy · 22/09/2023 21:36

My Dd was married recently the younger girls/women wore jumpsuits .

LittleObe · 23/09/2023 11:59

How about a silk cami and fancy coloured/silky wide leg trousers?

anon2022anon · 23/09/2023 12:43

To be honest I think at 19, don't worry about wedding guesr, and just go for something pretty rather than sexy, in whatever style suits her most. A floral fit and flare dress from new look would fit the bill if she doesn't want to spend lots.

EvelynBeatrice · 23/09/2023 14:58

If you're patient and wade through Next sale online comes up with lots of bargains.
Daughter similar age says that sometimes River Island good smart day dress options that accommodate the small of frame but blessed of bust. I noticed when in there myself that do do some good natural fabrics amongst the poly or ecovero dross including items made in commonwealth countries and not just China.

Have you got any upmarket charity shops near you or consignment stores that you’d be able to have a look at?

New look is a good call she will get something

NancyJoan · 25/09/2023 20:51

A long bias cut satin skirt and a simple knit top would look great.

mathanxiety · 25/09/2023 21:04

One of my DDs wore a crossover front jumpsuit to a wedding. It suited her really well (HH bust) .
