19year old dd, what to wear for a wedding

OwlMother · 22/09/2023 20:36

Just that really. We have a family wedding in two weeks, dh's brother. Dd (19) lives in jeans and trainers, she's very sporty, quite a tomboy but does wear skirts going out or in the summer, or dresses to eg a uni ball.

She had thought she could wear a dress from one of her balls but wearing an evening dress isn't really right. So she's really stuck, a
Googling "wedding guest dress" throws up options which feel way too formal for her. She is very busty (28g) which complicates things. She's also very frugal, hates the thought of buying something that won't get a lot of wear.

DHs family do weddings very traditionally, think lots of outfits from Coast with everything matching so I don't want her to feel out of place, but also want her to feel like herself. Does anyone have any suggestions of what type of thing would be appropriate but not too formal? I don't think I'm being much help to her at the moment.

I absolutely love this dress, it is stunning. I can’t remember the last time I saw a dress I liked this much. Just wish I had the figure for it and it was in my size. 😞

HappyPurrrsday · 26/09/2023 18:03

What about a sequin jumpsuit, like this?

https://www.debenhams.com/product/nasty-gal-sequin-colorblock-plunge-wide-leg-jumpsuit_bgg02773

https://www.nastygal.com/gb/premium-diamond-sequin-halterneck-jumpsuit/BGG18322.html

Could always tone it tone for the nuptials with some kind of jacket or dare I say cardi. Then perfect for dancing after.

If too razzle dazzle, try Debenhams. They have a whole page of 'evening' jumpsuits: https://www.debenhams.com/category/womens-playsuits-jumpsuits-jumpsuits-evening

I know she is, I can read you know! Please tell me what is wrong with my saying I LOVE THIS DRESS? Did I say I liked it for the OP’s dd? No, I didn’t, but I did say I would absolutely love it for ME. Yes, for ME!

Roman? Isn't that aimed at over 50s?

But it was recommended for the OP's daughter by someone whose 18 year old daughter has it in blue.

It didn't strike me as a dress which an 18 or 19 year old would pick. It's an odd length. I would have thought that age group would prefer much shorter or much longer. I'm much older than 19. I wouldn't wear it either.

Yes @miserablebitch and the OP is not talking about YOU...this is not about YOU...it's about a dress for 19 year old daughter 😉

At what age do you think that dress stops being "fugly"?

ItJustFellOutLikeWordVomit · 26/09/2023 22:48

Ps re my post I’m 31 and (rightly or wrongly) still like to feel like I’m a young person that is up to date with fashion 😂 x

YerAWizardHarry · 26/09/2023 22:49

What is wrong with her uni ball gowns? That’s exactly what people would wear to weddings where I’m from

0lga · 27/09/2023 01:07

My DD is 21 and was at a wedding last month. Most of the girls her age wore maxi jumpsuits or maxi dresses, with block heel sandals, flat sandals or even converse.

There were none of the short tight clubbing dresses that were in fashion a few years ago for 20 something women ( the kind that were worn with a very dark fake tan, false eyelashes and stripper shoes ).

caveat - this was the wedding of quite a young couple who dress informally, I guess it might be different if the bride and groom were older and more formal.

IMO some of the dresses linked to on this thread look more suitable for a woman of 40 than a 19 year old!

HolidayHappy123 · 27/09/2023 02:15

Tons of jumpsuits from Next e.g. www.next.co.uk/style/su098540/n10271#n10271

TBH...it doesn't

Icedlatteplease · 27/09/2023 07:19

Hit the charity shops, try on everything wedding appropriate. She'll find something suitable

Yes that was my point. I'm so fed up of the assumption by some posters that, ugly dresses will be fine if you're over a certain age.
