Trousers in question are here: https://www.fatface.com/women/clothing/trousers/blake-wide-leg-drape-trouser/980366.html?dwvar980366_color=KHAKIGREEN#q=trousers&lang=en_GB&start=3

I really love how they look on me and thinking a white slip-on or lace up trainer like the model is wearing is my first go-to shoe. What would you suggest for a slightly smarter work look? I don't wear heels so they aren't an option. I'm not quite sure if the type of shoes I'm thinking of go with this draped, wide-leg look. Should I go for a pointy toe? Colour-wise, black and white would work with this brown/khaki colour, but what else? In case it's relevant, I'm 40 and 5'1.

Something like one of these? I broswed Next for examples.

I don't really like any of the shoes you've linked. They look uncomfortable and more suited to a narrower leg. The white trainer looks great.

thislittlebird · 11/09/2023 16:56

@MerryChristmasToYou yeah I also prefer the trainers but I'm looking for options for the work occasions where I can't wear white trainers but would still like to wear the trousers.

Maybe a brogue? Not black though. A darker brown could look nice.

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/09/2023 17:56

I think you need a brown chunky lace up with them for a more office-y look.
The loafers look a bit too dainty, as do the plimsoll type shoes on the FF website.
I'm not keen on loafers or ballet shoes, which may be colouring my judgement.

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/09/2023 17:57

Those chunky loafers look more like it.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 11/09/2023 18:01

I don't like non-chunky loafers with them, but I like pointed toes:

thislittlebird · 11/09/2023 18:02

Thanks all, will see if I can anything a bit chunkier for my wide feet that work! Anything too chunky can look silly on me, so I couldn't go as chunky as some examples above, but chunkier than the ones I found earlier could work.

Thanks! I quite like this style. I did feel like something pointed might be an option here when I tried them earlier.

Be careful on stairs with pointy shoes and wide leg trousers. I have had several near misses!

I'm not used to wearing such wide legs, it's a concern!

I really feel a wide leg trouser needs a chunky shoe (certainly on me anyway) If not trainers something like these which I spotted in M&S earlier and thought were quite cool. They come in camel or black.

Those are a good choice. Don't go for black and definitely not patent.

deedeemegadoodoo · 11/09/2023 21:55

I like wearing brogue / lace up shoes with a small platform wedge.

similar to this:

mdinbc · 11/09/2023 21:57

You can wear just about anything really. An ankle boot with a rounded-point, or a chunkier loafer is the most comfortable choice, or you can do a clog. I've always loved clogs, and they look great for fall.

Palindrone · 11/09/2023 22:10

All the shoes you linked to are ugly. 3 is the least offensive.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 11/09/2023 22:53

The fabric of your trousers (nice trousers!) is like a heavy twill and I'm not sure it will go with your choices. I think the chunky brogues, chunky loafers like the ones PP have linked would look great for work.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 11/09/2023 22:55

...actually, looking at the way the black ones have been styled with the leather boots and not liking it, I think pointy shoes don't look good with them.

LaffTaff · 11/09/2023 23:20

Dark brown chelsea boots (with a thick sole).

Yes, that what I think too.

Between the extra fabric and the chunky shoe it all too heavy and the shoe ruins the drape of the pants.

How kind lol. I quickly browsed for a few examples of wide-fit shoes that would be work-appropriate, not much thought went into it. I find some of the very chunky shoes quite ugly too, so each to their own.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's input. Some interesting comments in the mix!

Yeah, agreed. I might try some slightly chunkier options but the very chunky ones look incredibly stupid on me so I can't go that route. Might try a brogue as well as pointed!

Hand made in England!

Love the trousers. I think you can't go too dainty, or too heavy so a proper shoe but no thick soles.

these are lovely!
