Gentle cheap face wash that removes waterproof mascara

I've been using Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel for 15+ years but it's too expensive and I've found it to be too drying in the last year or so. I've tried Simple refreshing facial wash but it doesn't really get the oily makeup and mascara off without a couple of washes.

I have part oily part dry skin, wear foundation and powder plus waterproof mascara every day.

I want a supermarket/Boots style (rather than beauty salon) brand that's much cheaper than Dermalogica but gets rid of the foundation and mascara without overdrying. And I asking for the impossible?

Superdrug Vitamin E hot cloth cleanser. Great Elizabeth Arden dupe.

Body shop camomile cleanser is great for removing makeup.

Have you tried double cleansing? Get some of these microfibre cloths (I got some cheap from primark that have lasted years so far but these Superdrug ones are a bargain!) https://www.superdrug.com/skin/face-skin-care/cleansers/hot-cloth-cleansing/superdrug-studio-microfibre-cloths-7pk/p/813549?gbraid=0AAAAADp4mzw-nBEOm4MtujdheQqoAnIg&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxuCnBhDLARIsAB-cq1q8Oeg8W9xwH7fWCD1Pmzif1b-G4gme9ED33cutQqwwAAsBfy2x-w0aAstMEALwwcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Then you'd use the cloth wet for a first pass at removing makeup - you'll be surprised how effective it is just on its own even on mascara - then go back in with the cleanser for a second pass to remove the residue.

I use Dermalogica too and need to find an alternative but I use Simple Eye Make Up rRmover for my mascara and it does the job well. Maybe give that a try.

MonkeyChiselTree · 07/09/2023 20:13

Thank you for these suggestions. Ideally it would be a wash off in the shower one for the morning at least although the cloth ones would work in the evening.

CeraVe. The non-drying one (green not blue). Amazing stuff and lasts ages.

Bodyshop camomile butter for oily make up. Mascara removed with cheap baby lotion on a cotton pad.

Eucerin do a body wash which has urea in it which I've used as a facewash for years. It's a big bottle and lasts ages. Shifts makeup and doesn't leave my skin tight.

Second this.

I remove eye makeup first with baby lotion (or any cheap body lotion - Tesco do a non fragranced one) on a cotton pad; great for gently removing waterproof mascara.

I cleanse my face afterwards.

The Body Shop Chamomile balm cleanser or the jelly cleanser. Both excellent.

Or the inkey list oat balm cleanser.

I like Garnier Aloe Vera refreshing face wash. It shifts waterproof mascara but doesn't upset my sensitive skin. Its on offer in superdrug at the moment.

Aldi's Lacura face wash is excellent and cheap as chips.

I use Dermalogica special cleansing gel and find that because it's so concentrated I only need to use the tiniest drop so mine last for ages compared to any cheaper more watery alternatives

I like using Nivea double effects to remove my mascara

I also use Boots melting gel as a first cleanse or Micellar water if wearing makeup or spf followed by my Dermalogica

I think it's definitely worth the money due to the fact one bottle lasts me ages

Simple face wash is dreadful and dries my skin out. I used to use it as a teenager. My DD bought some recently which I tried and it was still crap so I threw it away and bought her Dermalogica clear start instead.

We tried the Cerave SA buts it's ridiculously watery. It's ok as a cleanser but far too watery so a waste of money.

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 01:16

When I'm tired but need to cleanse I think micellar water is great

Lookingoutside · 08/09/2023 01:30

You’re not going to get your mascara off with face wash.

Try some micellar water with a cotton pad, you don’t have to double cleanse if you don’t want to but it feels nice and can make your skin brighter.

Your face wash will be fine for your morning cleanse.

Towdalinenow · 08/09/2023 02:02

Tip from the older generation… Vaseline for removing eye makeup is amazing. Rub in with finder. No irritation and damp cotton wall wipes it all away in a flash.

Much better than any makeup remover.

blueshoes · 08/09/2023 02:02

Don't use waterproof mascara. Use tubing mascara instead. Easy to remove with warm water.

Towdalinenow · 08/09/2023 02:02

Finder? Finger!!

Inkey List oat balm cleanser

The best thing I've ever used on my face!!!!!!

NewbieSM · 08/09/2023 02:09

Agree the chamomile cleansing oil or balm is excellent at removing waterproof makeup, but I would use it on a dry face to break down the make up then add water to emulsify, follow with the cerave hydrating cleaner in the shower, leaves skin clean but not dry

Justhereforaibu1 · 08/09/2023 02:29

I'm tired so must be reading this wrong, but why are you washing it off in the morning? Do you work nights? Genuine question.

NyanBinaryJohn · 08/09/2023 08:30

I know I don't quite fit the bill with this brand because they only stock it in large Boots stores and some department stores.

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser is easy and gentle, not to mention cheaper than your current brand. Removes makeup and leaves my face feeling clean and soft.

Dermalogica Special Cleansing gel has always got it off in the past so I'm looking for (possibly the impossible) of a similar one that's cheaper and doesn't now dry out my skin.

I have had 2 micellar waters in the recent past but they sting my eyes too much for mascara removal.

Ha I see what you mean! No I shower in the morning and would ideally use the same in the morning as the evening. Something that suits my face. I could use two different things but in the evening when it's warm I like to wash my face with a face wash in cool water. And in the mornings I like to wash my face in the shower.
