Non-girly blouses or tops to go with widelegged trousers

CharlotteRumpling · 05/09/2023 13:03

Looking for some sleek blouses or tops to go with navy or charcoal wideleg trousers. I am fussy. I want:
No massive puffy sleeves, frilly yokes, ties or ruffles on the sleeves.
No florals. Plain, geometric or very small print, preferably not ditsy ( yes, I know)
Cotton or viscose, not polyester
Jewel colours preferred if possible
Below £60
I am nearly 5"8, a size 10-12, small busted so high neck is ok. But have a menopausal tummy, so very fitted doesn't work.

I love the Fold but beyond my budget. I like sleek, structural shapes like Cos usually, so anything similar?

Cleary I have asked for the holy grail!

Can I be cheeky and offer you no help at all but ask where you got your charcoal wideleg trousers from? 😉

TreesWelliesKnees · 05/09/2023 19:04

I've been searching for tops like this for an age, to no avail. It's all puffs and frills and flowers everywhere. Watching with interest, as all I seem to be able to wear these days is a cotton shirt.

Britpopbaby · 05/09/2023 19:06

Not a top as such but have you considered a body?

MrsElsa · 05/09/2023 19:10

With my wide leg high waist work trousers I have been wearing:

Cream short sleeved high neck fine knit tee (H and M)

Cropped loose fit white polycotton shirt. It hits above the waistband of the trousers and is loose, I wear a cami underneath. (Vinted find, searched on attributes not brand)

BuddhaAtSea · 05/09/2023 19:13

I wear these with wide leg trousers, the cut balances it nicely. I have a menopausal tummy.

I hate frilly faffy tops and love wide leg trousers!
So I wear slim fit tshirts, high neck sleeveless tank tops, shirts over fitted vest top or shirts tied at waist.
In winter polo neck jumpers and fitted jumpers over shirts.

I find a lot on Vinted

Madcats · 05/09/2023 19:27

They've lost the plot recently with neck ties and bows but, if you just want a sleek shirt/blouse, look at Hawes & Curtis

www.hawesandcurtis.co.uk/womenswear

I kitted teen out for "formal" 6th form in their £20/shirt sale earlier in the year.

PepeParapluie · 05/09/2023 19:30

Have you looked in La Redoute? They have a lot of stuff but what you mentioned made me think of Anne Weyburn in La redoute which may have something that works. I saw this but no idea if it would work colour wise or if the print is too big, but hopefully they might have some others if that’s no good! https://www.laredoute.co.uk/ppdp/prod-350305819.aspx#searchkeyword=Anne%20weyburn%20top&shoppingtool=search

Zara have always had lots of satin blouses. Just like a shirt. Quality not always brilliant but might be ok?

bestbefore · 05/09/2023 19:34

Or this?

I have been browsing at M&S and found this: https://www.marksandspencer.com/printed-collared-shirt/p/clp60615584?intid=mobileappppdpshare

Thanks everyone for all the responses. Somehow fitted tees and bodies don't look good on me, though I can wear a jumper in winter. Also want something I can wear to work, then out to dinner? I realise I am being super fussy.

@MrsPepperp0t they are just ordinary M and S wide leg trousers. Nothing very fancy, but they look best on me. I also have a couple from Zara last year.

@Madcats I totally forgot about Hawes and Curtis. I quite like some of them. This is cotton, and while I often find prints fussy, I like this one.Women's Pink & Yellow Paisley Semi-Fitted Cotton Shirt (hawesandcurtis.co.uk)

Zara satin shirts are polyester, I think, and therefore too shiny for me. I did order one, and then found it just too slippery somehow. Same for the M and S polyester shirts above, though that viscose one may be worth ordering.

@BuddhaAtSea I do like Muji, but those tees may be a bit too casual.

I really like this from Mango.Satin wrap blouse - Women | Mango United Kingdom

Women's Pink & Yellow Paisley Semi-Fitted Cotton Shirt

Feminine is made easy in this attractive pink and yellow all-over paisley print. Cut from luxurious cotton fabric, it is closely cut at the bust and gently expands at the waist and hip, creating a beautiful shape.

Everything at Marks is 100% polyester or has a label proclaiming it's made out of recycled water bottles. Like that's a good thing.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 05/09/2023 22:10

Does your objection to polyester include recycled polyester? Is it a heat thing?

Only I have this blouse which was very comfortable to wear, including dancing on a hot day, although I actually bought it for work.

sezane will be your best friend
eg https://www.sezane.com/en/product/florence-shirt/ecru#size-4

https://www.sezane.com/en/product/ella-shirt/navy-blue#size-6

if too expensive look in the sale / last look - but honestly I’d pay more for proper silk etc

CharlotteRumpling · 06/09/2023 08:05

@CharlotteStreetW1 I get very hot, itchy and sweaty in polyester because I am in London and take the Tube or walk most days. Plus peri-menopausal! I have tried, but it just feels wrong on my skin.

@stealthbanana Sezane is lovely, I agree. I think I may have to increase my budget.

@babbscrabbs I like that plain orange top. I need to look at Vinted too.

I like a similar style top, OP, and it depresses me a bit that the only option seems to be shirts. Where are all the nice but unfussy tops? Shirts with a collar are a bit too work-like for me, for going out for dinner, etc. I've worn a lot of halterneck tops during the summer, which I love with wide leg trousers, but doesn't fit the brief for winter.

Again, doesn't fit the brief, this time for material, but I've just got this from Zara and I love the colour, print and shape
https://www.zara.com/uk/en/printed-kimono-shirt-p08450154.html
And I have this in my basket, to wear with a cowl neck cami or similar underneath during autumn, hopefully it will sit at the top of my trousers as they are high waist

Do you like a big collar? Albaray is lovely feeling material, but this season's prints are not great so far- this isn't too floral looking. But I've had a couple of lovely bits from Vinted, have a leopard print one on the way myself

This Massimo Dutti top is nice, though may be a bit short for you
https://www.massimodutti.com/gb/ombre-printed-crossover-blouse-l05129825

& other stories style sometimes fits your brief too, nice clothes that seem to be quite minimalist in style, but without being harsh

And Uniqlo is always a good shout for simple shapes and block colours (but sometimes boring)

Thank you @anon2022anon for that great list. I love that Massimo top. What a fab colour. I think I will order it. Also like that Zara cardigan for autumn. And I see a few things I like in the Ines edit on Uniqlo.

So hard to get anything in natural fabrics these days. I have just ordered this top- sized down- from Thought for autumn. I thought it was cotton because most of their stuff is, but it has only 59% cotton and the rest polyester. The sleeves may be too puffy as well. Hear me out - but try New Look. They are fab for nice shirts that aren't too flouncy. Some of their shirts are that horrible cheap looking polyester but these ones aren't (and I know you said no polyester, but these are floaty and comfy)

They bring out different colours in this shirt regularly, I have it in cobalt, bright green, ochre and bright pink. It's nice tucked into wide leg trousers

They also have a short sleeved version

Jigsaw usually carry silk tops in a simple shape (you have to avoid the sometimes garish colors). In past years, I've got beautiful jewel-tones in precisely. It might be worth a look on Vinted.
