Non-girly blouses or tops to go with widelegged trousers

CharlotteRumpling · 05/09/2023 13:03

Looking for some sleek blouses or tops to go with navy or charcoal wideleg trousers. I am fussy. I want:
No massive puffy sleeves, frilly yokes, ties or ruffles on the sleeves.
No florals. Plain, geometric or very small print, preferably not ditsy ( yes, I know)
Cotton or viscose, not polyester
Jewel colours preferred if possible
Below £60
I am nearly 5"8, a size 10-12, small busted so high neck is ok. But have a menopausal tummy, so very fitted doesn't work.

I love the Fold but beyond my budget. I like sleek, structural shapes like Cos usually, so anything similar?

I'm not girly in the slightest but have recently purchased some nice Love and Roses tops from Next which go with my navy, cream and black pairs of wide leg trousers. I have similar body dimensions. Might work for you?

DrMarshaFieldstone · 06/09/2023 13:00

I don't think they make them any more but you are essentially describing the Boden Ravello top. It has a high neck with wide pleats and skims the tummy. They look dreadful on me as I have a very large bust but they look quite sleek on a smaller bust. You might find some on Vinted.

MonikerBing · 06/09/2023 13:18

I am a similar shape and size to you and do wear fitted tops with wide leg trousers. Jigsaw for example do the same style every year. In the winter I wear fitted jumpers or polo necks. (Jigsaw or Whistles generally have good ones).

However on the shirt front, I think you need to up your budget and look at silk shirts - see Other Stories. I have a stock of silk shirts built up over several years and wear these often.

I am a similar build to you OP and I think have similar tastes, or know what looks good on me i.e. smooth lines and unfussy.

I like my skinny polo necks with wide leg trousers.
Also I've found the more boxy cut looks OK with wide legs trousers - makes my legs look about 9 foot long.

I've got a really low quality fine cashmere turtle neck from M&S.

Also, sleeveless jumpers with any old plain blouse underneath.

I wear a really thin thermal top underneath jumpers to avoid the itch, keep me warm and keep the lines smooth.

You need Uniqlo shirts. Plain colours, long or short sleeve. Viscose and need minimal ironing.

These look nice, a bit pricy but seems to be various offers if you sign up for emails or buy more than one

Do try La Redoute, and also H&M. They allow you to filter by material so you can easily filter out all the polyester. Quite often do good “basics” IME. And La Redoute often has Sezane-alikes.

Lisapop1 · 06/09/2023 19:34

Try zara or dlsb, they have some really nice blouses. Dlsb have some really stylish ones

CharlotteRumpling · 06/09/2023 21:04

Thanks all. Will check out these reccos. Especial thanks to pp who recommended La Redoute. Would never have looked there but yes, they do have Sezane like pure cotton shirts. I also spotted this on M and S.Most tees cling to my tummy, but this is relaxed and not clingy, so will be ok. I just wish they had more colours. Completely failing on both price point and colour, but ticking lots of the other boxes, this top from Reiss has been my go-to for managing to go with anything and flatter my small boobs/untoned tummy figure:

I have a couple of their plain knitted T-shirts too which are really nice and are fine in washing machine and tumble dryer even though the6 say hand wash. They don’t have any on sale now but often do between seasons.

Another vote for Uniqlo. I can’t bear a fussy look, and it really doesn’t suit me. I wear wide leg trousers most days in the winter, with their shirts, merino knits or t-shirts.

I like a similar style top, OP, and it depresses me a bit that the only option seems to be shirts. Where are all the nice but unfussy tops? Shirts with a collar are a bit too work-like for me, for going out for dinner, etc. I've worn a lot of halterneck tops during the summer, which I love with wide leg trousers, but doesn't fit the brief for winter.

Again, doesn't fit the brief, this time for material, but I've just got this from Zara and I love the colour, print and shape
https://www.zara.com/uk/en/printed-kimono-shirt-p08450154.html
And I have this in my basket, to wear with a cowl neck cami or similar underneath during autumn, hopefully it will sit at the top of my trousers as they are high waist

Do you like a big collar? Albaray is lovely feeling material, but this season's prints are not great so far- this isn't too floral looking. But I've had a couple of lovely bits from Vinted, have a leopard print one on the way myself

This Massimo Dutti top is nice, though may be a bit short for you
https://www.massimodutti.com/gb/ombre-printed-crossover-blouse-l05129825

& other stories style sometimes fits your brief too, nice clothes that seem to be quite minimalist in style, but without being harsh
https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/3426152706-other-stories-white-fine-knit-top

And Uniqlo is always a good shout for simple shapes and block colours (but sometimes boring)

That pink Zara top is amazing. Does it come down low though? Just wondering if I'd need something under it in the office

dudsville · 07/09/2023 07:20

Your brief is one I share OP, so ive just come on to say I think this needs to be more of a long term goal, picking up tops along the way, rather than hoping to but 5, say, all at once. If you bought one top from The Fold now you may find you are happier with it then a week's worth of tops from other shops.

anon2022anon · 07/09/2023 09:07

@Blackblueandgold its not especially low, but it's quite a loose fit- I sized down, but if I needed to lean over to show someone something, you would see down my top. But it's too pretty to wear to the office, wear it to the pub!

PersephonePomegranate23 · 10/09/2023 16:29

How do you feel about satin? Zara have a large range of colours in.

GettingStuffed · 10/09/2023 22:50

This shirt looks good, it's from a shirtmaker rather than a fashion retailer. If I wasn't so well endowed I'd buy it
