Flowergirl dress - wedding in Greece

Hi all,

I've been let down at last minute with our flowergirl dress & the wedding is next month in Greece! My daughter (the flowergirl) is a major part due to the small scale wedding over there so I'm desperately trying to sort this ASAP.

My friend has suggested looking at communion dresses as a suitable alternative & I've found some on Gumtree & Vinted etc. I like the idea of one in particular which matches my dress pretty well - it's pretty much perfect apart from 1 thing...

I'm only unsure of it being suitable in the heat we'll likely get there.

The dress itself is 100% polyester, and the high waisted underskirt hoop is polyester & nylon. I'm not sure of the brand but apparently this was worn on a communion day in 20oC heat with no issues so hopefully it will be ok?

Also - what's the best way to keep the dresses clean before, during, and after the service before being back to the hotel to change? I've been recommended buying an apron for her to protect it whilst eating etc?

Just another issue which has cropped up... loads of fun though planning everything!

Sam x

My niece got her flower girl dress from Monsoon, she got married in Spain a couple of years ago and the dress was perfect.
Try putting Monsoon in your Vinted search, and good luck!

I’m on Crete right now, it’s sweltering.
I'd say how old your daughter is, time and location of wedding are key. What style and colour of your dress also. I’d go for the coolest style for her you can if she’s young. It’ll be cooler by next month, but still so much hotter than UK. I think we forget how hot it is abroad and the residual heat through to evening due to our crap summer climate 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks, I heard the temperatures are still lovely at the mo - lucky you being there now!

She's 8, and wedding is for early afternoon but will be photos all throughout afternoon as we've planned a bit of a scenic trip to get some taken. It's Zante - our favourite place :)

I'll grab a photo of the dress I really want and post it up I'm sure the seller won't mind as I'm just gauging opinions really!

The wedding is very early next month as I don't want to disrupt her school too much by taking her out. It's been moved already due to various reasons - was meant to be a month or 2 ago :(

I love the communion dress style - real princess dress!

The last 2 images are of another option I have - this one comes with a bolero too which looks really smart.

Oh gosh, it’s a lovely dress but polyester and all those layers… she will be really hot and sticky. Early Sep in Zakynthos is likely to be a LOT warmer than 20 degrees.
I would be looking for something more in this style.

Next and La Redoute also have some nice bridesmaid/flower girl options. this one has a similar shape to the one you love but would be cooler I think?

PatriciaHolm · 19/08/2023 23:02

As minipie says, I would expect it to be way over 20 in zante in early September- it could easily be 25+. She'll be super uncomfortable in those, unless she's only going to wear it in an airconditioned hotel.

Something like this?

Sammy2k · 19/08/2023 23:03

totally get your point about layers - there is lots of them plus the underskirt and hoop will add to that. She also has previously reacted to tulle so I’m being careful to avoid that as much as possible with direct skin contact

OP posts:
PatriciaHolm · 19/08/2023 23:06

If she's reacted to tulle, I would avoid polyester as polyester is the most common fabric for tulle. Combined with being hot and sweaty and finding it hard to sit down in all those layers she could be very unhappy.

PenguinLove1 · 19/08/2023 23:14

What about this? Looks light but still smart - and reduced to £18!

Added extra photos by accident to earlier post thanks for removing so quickly mods!

Thanks also everyone for suggestions I’ll look at them tomorrow! Some good ideas which still look as smart thanks again

To be honest it was prob less of a reaction to the tulle underskirt but I think she fidgeted that much she created an itch and rubbed away at it - she didn’t sit still at all that day lol.

Pleeease don't put her in polyester in Greece in September. It will be so sweaty and horrible! 100% cotton sleeveless.

This is absolutely beautiful and such a good price. Perfect for the heat!

Absolutely this sort of style. Stunning.

I really think you’ve dodged a bullet there with this dress not being ready in time. The bodice is heavy satin, which your dd would have cooked in. You need to be looking at lighter weight fabrics even if you ultimately choose polyester. Lily and Bo do absolutely gorgeous dresses eg https://www.notonthehighstreet.com/lillyandbo/product/holly-flower-girl-dress-in-white but I’m not seeing a fast delivery option unless you can change once you’ve signed in…Delivery coming up at estimate 29th August and the bodice front material is not clear. It would be cooler than the one you chose for sure as the second layer is lace and it’s open backed. There’s also a couple lf cotton dresses. This one is a bit more grown up. https://www.notonthehighstreet.com/hollyhastie/product/ava-smock-embroidery-cotton-girls-occasion-dress-white?referredBy=plp

The other thing to concern yourself with though is getting sun burnt. Will your dd be in the shade or sun much? Sun cream may stain the dress etc.

If you are worried about her overheating you could get a little sun umbrella for her. Also ultrasun doesn't leave yellow stains like most suncream and it lasts for hours.

GingerKombucha · 20/08/2023 07:29

I had a September wedding in the evening in Greece last year and it was still so hot - please prioritise comfort - I went with this for flower girls and was crisp and cool, you can change the sash if needed

Sammy2k · 20/08/2023 08:21

Thanks all I’m really torn now of ideas because I love the one I put pictures of on but all your ideas are fab.

the 100% communion dress comes with a lovely bolero which I was thinking would keep the sun off her shoulders and back a bit but a sun umbrella is a fantastic idea thanks.

I need to make mind up soon and the seller tells me that someone else is interested so I’ll need to bring her today to try on.

in the dress ideas given would you go for socks or tights alongside?

OP posts:
pilesofpaper · 20/08/2023 08:28

You cannot wear tights on Zante in September.
Please choose a lightweight cotton dress like any of those linked by pp, with some pretty sandals and prioritise your daughter's comfort and well-being. If it does get cooler in the evening you could get a pretty cardigan to match.

@GingerKombucha I love this dress I’ll have to get the sash changed if so but it’s a lovely option. Thanks
