Flowergirl dress - wedding in Greece

Hi all,

I've been let down at last minute with our flowergirl dress & the wedding is next month in Greece! My daughter (the flowergirl) is a major part due to the small scale wedding over there so I'm desperately trying to sort this ASAP.

My friend has suggested looking at communion dresses as a suitable alternative & I've found some on Gumtree & Vinted etc. I like the idea of one in particular which matches my dress pretty well - it's pretty much perfect apart from 1 thing...

I'm only unsure of it being suitable in the heat we'll likely get there.

The dress itself is 100% polyester, and the high waisted underskirt hoop is polyester & nylon. I'm not sure of the brand but apparently this was worn on a communion day in 20oC heat with no issues so hopefully it will be ok?

Also - what's the best way to keep the dresses clean before, during, and after the service before being back to the hotel to change? I've been recommended buying an apron for her to protect it whilst eating etc?

Just another issue which has cropped up... loads of fun though planning everything!

Sam x

I have decided this is the one I’m getting for her it’s much more airy then the one I had her try on the other day:

thanks for the suggestion for it!

A polyester dress in very high temperatures? We wore linen shorts (DH) and a cotton sundress (me) and changed into swim wear as soon as the service was over. The bride and groom were in similar clothes.

No, please don't. Please get her cotton. She'll be awfully uncomfortable in the heat.

Sammy2k · 22/08/2023 23:38

goodness me I was going by the earlier post recommending it as she used them in a wedding and found them ok.

my dd also said it was much better and she told me she hated the underskirt I put her in with the thick polyester dress over weekend so thought this was much better :(

This is simple and cool and will be far more comfortable for her! Also cheap!

That's perfect imo! If you're having alterations to your dress the seamstress could probably easily add a coloured sash to it too!

This is lovely OP- enjoy!

I had flowergirls in it in 34 degrees in a Greek September wedding, it's super cool and crisp and they had no problem. Just follow the Greeks and make sure everything is in the evening and you'll have a wonderful time.

ReallyNoNeed · 24/08/2023 22:48

You seem very keen on polyester! Cotton is so lovely.
Anyway have a fabulous day. Your daughter will look gorgeous no matter what!

Persiana · 24/08/2023 23:01

And I think you're crazy to even consider socks or tights! If you wanted that look why didn't you get married here, in the spring? The whole joy of a Greek wedding is to start late, say 5pm, and the evening is party time when it cools down. Dragging everyone on a photo tour in the heat of the day sounds bonkers too. Embrace the relaxed nature of a wedding abroad. I hope you don't have a whole wedding party in suits and structured satin bridesmaids dresses etc?!

This one still has three layers! Way too much. Imagine being in something that restrictive on holiday, as an adult, then x by a hundred for how a child will feel and behave as a result!

Sammy2k · 25/08/2023 15:41

I’ve changed the men to wear shorts and the page boy outfit too. Both will look smart still but much cooler.

the bridesmaid is happy with her dress and actually wants an option of her bolero to help keep the sun off her shoulders too.

getting close now!

He’s going to be hot in long sleeves - something loose would be cooler. How long will he need to wear it - just half an hour for the length of the service? Is the service in the late afternoon/evening?

Sammy2k · 25/08/2023 18:19

service is now around 5pm so beforehand photos and some after so he’ll have it on him for a few hours outside - and inside under air conditioning

Just arrived in Zante! Dresses and outfits also arrived so that’s a good thing too lol!!

warm is an understatement at the mo too - especially coming from rather poor weather at home

Glad you've arrived and are enjoying the heat! Have a wonderful time! I feel I want to ask for photos of the bid day, but that would be overdoing it in the circs!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 28/08/2023 13:31

*big day not bid, sorry.

Thank you & no problem at all will do :)

Just glad we got here before the air travel issues today!

Outfits laid out getting prepped after travelling! Thank you anyway :)

Pamper day is finally here! Day spent getting teeth whitened, nails done, eyebrow wax, eyebrow tint, eyelash tint and an all over wax. No beauty without pain lol!!

now on a clear / white food and drink diet will miss my daily coffees - although we all have rather sensitive teeth at the mo!

Thanks to everyone above for their advice comments and well wishes!

Wedding was perfect - good timing as it then rained the following days!

Everyone had a good day despite the excessive heat - both flower girl and page boy done brilliantly and behaved impeccably the whole day :). We kept the photos together in quick succession for them to get it out of the way.

my dress absolutely roasted me & so did the bridesmaid but even still we all had an absolutely fab day!

thanks again all for your advice

Have you been abroad with her before? How does she generally cope in the heat?

you could buy her a wee parasol to keep her shaded, you can get really lovely ones.

Could you get her the nice dress for the ceremony and some photos and then something that’s still nice but a bit lighter for later on if she’s too hot? You never know she might say she’s fine and wants to stay in the dress.

As for keeping it clean just don’t let her eat anything too saucy or greasy. I personally wouldn’t worry after the meal though if it gets a stain. If your worrying about photos so much can be photoshopped out now, I’m sure stains would be the same.
