Autumn fashion

Is it too soon to start an Autumn fashion thread? Its pitch black out at 9.30pm and I’m personally looking forward to big jumpers.

Has anyone got anything in mind for autumn

Think you’ll find there are several already!

MetaDaughter · 18/08/2023 06:28

Not that I can see them, now I’m looking - but I was on one yesterday …

Knee high boots and a beautifully cut tweed jacket are my current wants. Also a big suede tote bag - I cannot look at another crossbody bag.

DustyLee123 · 18/08/2023 07:10

I was in New Look yesterday, and it looks like long line cosy cardies are going to be in.

Curiouscat101 · 18/08/2023 20:27

@MetaDaughter sorry I didn’t realise there was another thread. Any links?

Every year. Every year I get to end of August and make a sensible list of what I need, then I go on threads like this and end up obsessing about looking for the perfect X that wasn’t on my list…

anyway, current list- flat brown or black knee high boots that are casual looking. Possibly suede.

A neutral cashmere jumper - either navy or cream/light beige.

A long sleeved “going out for drinks” top that can be tucked into jeans or wide leg trousers (that I already have), no ridiculousness at hem.

TizerorFizz · 18/08/2023 20:55

I’m going to talk about Autumn fashion from the catwalks as in Vogue trends. It should be in the shops that reproduce catwalk clothes at high street prices.

A fitted black coat. Black shoes - any heel. Pointed flats. Mary Jane’s with a block heel. Red shoes. Dark or scarlet. Layers of grey. Topped with a roomy grey coat. A big shawl. Could be tartan. Flat black boots that lace up (like DMs) or heeled boots.

New Look and Vogue sound miles apart regarding cardis.

LimeCheesecake · 18/08/2023 21:01

I do want some pointed flats, they are very practical for work. Hopefully there will be more about then.

see, happening already. I had a sensible list. New thing added. Thankfully I have fitted black winter coat I can get to the dry cleaners.

is it just black coats being fitted or are more winter coats going fitted? As a short person, am really hoping the oversized /baggy coat trend is coming to an end soon as they give petite woman the look of a child who’s borrowed their mums coat.

LimeCheesecake · 18/08/2023 21:02

Are heeled boots chunky heel or more stiletto?

Howtosolveit · 18/08/2023 21:19

Ooh, good shout OP. I love anticipating Autumn fashion. Are knee high boots back in style then? I have four pairs that I love bit have felt they were out recently. I know I don't have to be wedded to trends but would enjoy a resurgence nonetheless.

LimeCheesecake · 18/08/2023 21:21

I like a knee high boot as I’m short and with midi length skirts, ankle boots have an optical illusion of me being even shorter than I am (the two lines across the lower leg, boot top then skirt hem) whereas knee highs that disappear under the skirt hem look better. I’m not sure how fashionable they are, but work for me so I can wear below knee length skirts without looking odd.

TizerorFizz · 18/08/2023 22:10

Stiletto or thinner heeled long boots.

I have seen the pix of layers which do really mean a bigger coat over the top. However the fitted black coat is fine if you don’t like layers. They always look great and with red shoes, it’s an easy look to pull off.

CheetosCheerios · 18/08/2023 22:16

I want some winter dresses, good quality warm tights, midi length a-line skirts and fitted jumpers. And some knee boots, possibly a couple of pairs (flat and with a small block heel). And a long coat that isn’t my duvet puffa.

I’m very vague on styles and colours, so already looking for inspiration.

TizerorFizz · 18/08/2023 22:16

Actually a trench or camel coat is featured too. Plus hoodies and leggings. For evening look at metallics. Blazers with that big scarf and jeans with a striped shirt. So a bit preppy. Brogues and loafers as ling as they are black.

If anyone really wants to know the silky season fashion: knickers over tights. No? I thought not.

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 18/08/2023 22:30

@LimeCheesecake I feel your pain! Coats have been rubbish for a decade. I've held onto an old Reiss one past it'd natural life span because at least it fits my shoulders. Fitted is so much better when you are petite. Does anyone have a pic/ link for the Vogue-approved black coat?

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 18/08/2023 22:30

its life span

LimeCheesecake · 18/08/2023 22:36

There’s a nice striped silk shirt in Boden.

TizerorFizz · 19/08/2023 08:24

M&S have a great striped shirt. I have it and it’s very good fabric.

Coats? Costs have been wonderful for decades. Anyone who cannot find a good coat doesn’t know where to look. I’ve got a big cupboard full of them. Lots of styles because there’s been so much choice!

If you can find a coat size 4 petite I'm in!!

TizerorFizz · 19/08/2023 08:50

DD is a uk size 6. What makes you think any year has loads of size 4? However wrap coats in small sizes have possibilities! Some makes eg Zara, XS is very small. You just need to get out and look. Massimo Dutti are small as are Mango.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/08/2023 08:58

I’ve bought some over the knee black suede boots with a small block heel - to wear with midi skirts and dresses.

Happy to see longline black skirts back in the shops and hoping to find a nice midi one with a split at the front.

I’m looking forward to wearing the merino jumpers and cardigans that I bought last year (M&S) - they’re really fine and light to wear.

Also hoping to find a way to wear denim midi skirts into autumn, but not sure about footwear.

I’d like a nice black blazer, but not sure if one exists at the price point I’m willing to pay.

KrazyboutKillian · 19/08/2023 09:16

Ohh an autumn thread ,
I saw a beautiful tweed jaeger coat at m and s , but way too expensive for me , so the search is on
very happy to hear long boots are coming back , I bought some suede ones in a sale during lockdown that I’ve hardly worn ,
to the pp re the m and s striped shirt which one is it that you have ?
I definitely want Mary janes
I bought wide leg jeans for £10 off e bay brand new so I’m looking forward to those
hoping to buy a boat neck ( not a strangling crew neck ) cashmere this year so waiting for jumpers to filter through

LimeCheesecake · 19/08/2023 09:25

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie - ooh long black skirts would be a good addition.

going on a few different shop websites, there seems to be a lot of cranberry clothes about. It’s quite a flattering colour and would work well with black, grey and dark blue. Wonder if it’s the autumnal next step from the Barbie pink everyone started sneaking into their wardrobes this summer.

(every year. Every year I make a sensible autumn /winter shopping list that doesn’t involve me spending a fortune and decide that I will let fashions and trends go by me this year, then I get sucked in.)

SheSawSeaShore · 19/08/2023 10:12

I want a fitted, wool coat. Not wrap style - makes me look like a barrel. Not funnel or high neck. But the main thing is I want it tailored at the back. And ideally not black! This has been surprisingly difficult to find over the last couple of years, so any suggestions gratefully received!

storminamooncup · 19/08/2023 11:08

I was thinking of getting some boots actually, ankle boots, but these are a nightmare as I have very wide feet and chunky ankles/legs. I also have some balance problems (disability) so can't have a 'too high' heel. Where can I shop for comfy wide fit black boots?

MorrisZapp · 19/08/2023 11:53

I've always leaned towards cowboy styling (mid or light wash jeans, brown leather shoes and accessories - never black, and heeled boots no matter what).

I've bought some tan ankle boots which have a very rounded toe, and a three inch chunky heel. I love them, but dare I ask where they fall on the fashion map? They've got a braided leather detail, for which blame too much Kevin Costner at an impressionable age.
