Autumn fashion

Is it too soon to start an Autumn fashion thread? Its pitch black out at 9.30pm and I’m personally looking forward to big jumpers.

Has anyone got anything in mind for autumn

I’ve found Grenson boots quite wide fitting,@storminamooncup - and that can be improved by going up half a size.

https://www.grenson.com/frederique-pull-on-womens-brogue-boots-in-mid-brown-leather/

Alternatively have you tried (you probably have!) opting for the male equivalent of what you want?

Trickers, for instance, make a Derby boot for women and a similar Derby boot for men. IME the only difference is they use a wider last for the men’s boots. (Though I suppose the sizing starts at a larger size for men.)

@SheSawSeaShore hobbs do a lovely fitted coat, I'm gutted as I couldn't get it to fit me size 10 too small size 12 too big, m&s had it at half price, john lewis only took a little off the full price.

TizerorFizz · 19/08/2023 19:34

@storminamooncup M&S do wide ankle boots. I live in them in the winter. I’ve chunky ones and flat Chelsea boots. Not expensive.

Every year. Every year I get to end of August and make a sensible list of what I need, then I go on threads like this and end up obsessing about looking for the perfect X that wasn’t on my list…

anyway, current list- flat brown or black knee high boots that are casual looking. Possibly suede.

A neutral cashmere jumper - either navy or cream/light beige.

A long sleeved “going out for drinks” top that can be tucked into jeans or wide leg trousers (that I already have), no ridiculousness at hem.

Literally my list. You've read my mind!

TizerorFizz · 19/08/2023 23:32

@MorrisZapp I think you know the answer. Do you have a Stetson? If you wear the same thing all the time, then I guess fashion doesn’t interest you. Fashion is about embracing change. Looking at new clothes and looks. A look maintained for years with little variation isn’t fashion. It’s more you being you.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/08/2023 23:56

I was looking in some High End shops yesterday ( I wasn't shopping , I was waiting and the shops were there )

Short skirts and fitted short jackets in checked patterns seemed to be a theme .

More Houndstooth than Cher From Clueless thankfully . Though patterns always look their price !

TizerorFizz · 20/08/2023 05:59

Didn’t see many short skirts on catwalk images. More midi skirts with slits. Thankfully!!

storminamooncup · 20/08/2023 06:10

I don't know where to shop in my 40s anymore. I've gone off boden and joules, so where is similar? I used to like the boden quality. The bright dresses and patterns but now its all beige and dull. Joules is same-y too now.

Also how soon can I get the turtlenecks out? I do love a good turtleneck.

Niftythrifter · 20/08/2023 06:36

@KrazyboutKillian John Lewis have a nice tweed coat imho for under £150 but it’s not online.

Blankscreen · 20/08/2023 06:43

I went shopping yesterday at Battersea power station so a few but not loads os nice shops.also love ina town with quite a few boutique shops.

Looked to me to be a lot of the same stuff from last year. Blazers, trench coats, loafers, bomber javkets and wide leg trousers. The over size look seems to be continuing.

Maybe I'm just very uninspiring but I couldn't"t see and real new trends.

LimeCheesecake · 20/08/2023 08:10

I’m not sure all the shops have their clothes in yet- and this might be a year when what the designers put on the catwalks and what ends up being fashionable is different.

TizerorFizz · 20/08/2023 10:34

Trench coats, loafers and jeans will continue. Lots of the loose camel or grey coats will combine too. Hoodies are featured again and get a huge scarf. Fasten it with a pin. Midi skirt instead of jeans. Maybe not so many of them around yet.

@storminamooncup I quite like Boden shirts but not much more. Some of the fabrics are poor for the money. M&S has a couple of lovely shirts at the moment. They have upped their game in all sorts of ways. Excellent padded coats and jeans. You might like Seasalt. Plus Zara was always my “go to” in my 40s. They do follow trends very quickly but always have very wearable clothes too. Great for layers. Go to a big store or check on line. My DD buys trousers from Mango. Very well cut snd well priced. Cos have the best T shirts and always use decent fabrics. What are you looking for?

TizerorFizz · 20/08/2023 10:36

Meant to add, Arket and &OtherStories are definitely your age group too. Still mine and I am waaaay older than you. J Crew are worth a look.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/08/2023 11:03

From that Vogue link:

If massive wide shoulders and jeans so long that they come to your toes are in then I'm out !

Curiouscat101 · 20/08/2023 13:04

Does anyone wear uggs? I personally don’t understand the appeal

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 20/08/2023 13:11

No. Not me. DD does (late 20s) but when wfh. Never out unless popping to the shop. Sliders and socks too. She very much has a home look and a going out look.

TizerorFizz · 20/08/2023 13:14

@70isaLimitNotaTarget The high street will tone down the more extreme looks though. Wide long jeans have been in for ages. Hardly new this autumn. They tend to show extra long on the catwalk but realistically we don’t want long trousers getting wet. You can always invest in woolly leggings.

I’ve bought some over the knee black suede boots with a small block heel - to wear with midi skirts and dresses.

Happy to see longline black skirts back in the shops and hoping to find a nice midi one with a split at the front.

I’m looking forward to wearing the merino jumpers and cardigans that I bought last year (M&S) - they’re really fine and light to wear.

Also hoping to find a way to wear denim midi skirts into autumn, but not sure about footwear.

I’d like a nice black blazer, but not sure if one exists at the price point I’m willing to pay.

Hi, could you link to the M&S knitwear, please?

Remus always has good taste so I wondered which exactly was being recommended in terms of style but thanks for the top tip!

TizerorFizz · 20/08/2023 16:40

M&S have quite a lot of merino on line and it’s easy to search. Very good prices. It’s quite a “thin” wool but great for autumn.

superplumb · 20/08/2023 17:32

I'm after a cord belted knee length dress in either dark red or bottle green. Same with a blazer too.

Thank you! I’ve got a couple - turtleneck/v neck/striped. I haven’t looked since the winter though, so not sure what’s available now.

Lots of wearable and shop my own wardrobe kind of looks/ trends including the return of the black coat https://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/article/autumn-winter-2023-fashion-trends

Without a doubt, the dullest trend list of my lifetime.

Basically, fashion is sitting 2023 out.
