Does anyone wear hair toppers or wigs?

Where do you purchase yours from?

Do you wear or prefer human hair or synthetic hair?

I have very very fine hair due to low ferritin/anaemia and have been wearing hair toppers for the last 8 years.

I purchased my last 3 human hair toppers from a woman who hand makes toppers in the U.K. but she has raised her prices so very high recently that I just can not afford them anymore. My last topper (2 years ago) was £400 but the same length and density is now well over £1000.

I have worn wigs off and on for over 40 years (alopecia). I’ve never worn human hair as it gives me the ick factor. I get mine from either SimplyWigs, Continental Wigs or Valentine Wigs. I have hand tied special occasion wigs and everyday wefted ones. Price range £90-£500. Remember you might be entitled to the VAT off.

Hi! I have been wearing hair toppers and wigs for almost 10 years! They saved me from going crazy! (I have Trichotillomania and suffered anorexia when young, so my bio hair has always been a mess). I have a blog ( www.myhairtoppers.com ) about all things related to alternative hair - you are welcome to visit and connect with me if you like! Erika

Thanks ilovecherries, I often buy from Simply wigs I love their website, it’s so much more thoughtfully set up than many. How do you go about getting the VAT off, do I need a GP certificate?
Thank you Erika22 I will take a look.

I think simply wigs allows you to self declare. There is a question near the checkout asking if you are buying for medical reasons, and if you click that it opens up the option. You state your condition and confirm to HMRC that you are making a true declaration. I have a letter I got from my GP just confirming that I do have alopecia and if any other seller asks I just send a photo of that. I’ve never had an issue.

ItsJustNotHappening I have a beautiful Betsy too. How long have you been wearing toppers? It took me a good year or so to feel less self conscious in mine. They all literally feel like my own hair now.

ilovecherries, I have often wondered about the self declare section and if I should fill it out or not without an official go ahead from my GP. I will look into that, thanks.

I think it looks ok (ish) but I won't wear it all down. I usually pin some back from the front so that it's not possible to see the join and hides most of the top too. And then I curl the rest of it with a straightener or a wand.

I've just ordered some wig styling stuff from Simply Wigs . Are they a good company to buy from ? My wig I got through NHS Scotland , thankfully I didn't have to pay towards it .

ohimsohappy · 15/08/2023 20:41

Mine is synthetic by the way .

Autumnismyfavouritetime · 15/08/2023 21:38

ohimsohappy I have purchased a few things from them, I even rang them once to ask some questions and they were really friendly and helpful.

Yes, they are good. Which wig did you choose?

Autumnismyfavouritetime · 15/08/2023 21:42

ItsJustNotHappening I have to say my Beautiful Betsy wasn’t my favourite topper, it didn’t sit that well. The best toppers I’ve had so far are from Perfect Fringe, I’ve had two from her including the one I currently wear, they sit really flat. Sadly, I can’t afford a new one as she has put her prices up so much.

Oh I don't know if my wig was from them . The lady from the NHS sorted all that out for me . It was sort of like a wavy bob in blonde , which I could get away with as I was quite fair anyway . I was provided with a cleanser and balm but found the only way to get wig products was online . Glad you've had positive experiences with Simply Wigs .

ohimsohappy · 15/08/2023 21:52

I've ordered a styling cream ( Ellen Willie ) I will report back if it's any good , and about the buying experience from Simply Wigs 😁 .

ItsJustNotHappening · 15/08/2023 23:02

@Autumnismyfavouritetime Thanks for letting me know where you get yours from. My first Beautiful Betsy was fine. My second one, the one I’m wearing now, doesn’t seem to sit right (as you say) and the clips hurt my scalp. Don’t get me wrong it adds lots of volume but there is no way I could ever wear it down. It’s too obvious it’s fake and the scalp bit would never pass for an actual scalp.

primoseyellow · 15/08/2023 23:05

@Autumnismyfavouritetime Can I ask where your handmade topper was from? I have a perfect fringe which is great , just received a topper today and it's good but just looks wrong on me. Very wiggy and the part line is not right.

Autumnismyfavouritetime · 16/08/2023 10:07

primoseyellow They were from Amiwigs. Where did you latest come from? It is so disappointing when the turn out wiggy. Are you able to pluck the hairline?
ItsJustNotHappening I had the exact same issue with my BB, the clips were so so uncomfortable, I had to change the, all over. Even then I was never quite happy with it, I ended up selling her.

I got my styling cream from Simply Wigs this morning well this lunch time really , amazing really 'cos I went for the cheapie option of £ 1 95 delivery and only ordered on Sunday evening . It was nicely packaged with tissue paper and even a little chocolate . Nice one Simply Wigs !
Will report back on the (Ellen Willie) styling cream .

Autumnismyfavouritetime · 17/08/2023 09:22

ohimsohappy they do have such good customer service.

primoseyellow · 17/08/2023 14:28

@Autumnismyfavouritetime the part line is ok apart from the very front where there is a clip and silk base ends, it just looks bulky and obvious. I think there is too much hair on the base so it looks like a mini wig plopped on my head! My own natural hair is too fine to combine if that makes sense?

Autumnismyfavouritetime · 17/08/2023 15:48

I found my Beautiful Betsy and some synthetic ones were like that, they just wouldn’t lay flat enough, that’s what I like about the Perfect Fringe and Amiwigs ones, they are super flat but so expensive now. I am really fine on the front of my hairline so have never been able to combine my own hair.

I've worn wigs for several years, but I haven't found a way of washing them that keeps the original style intact. I use cold water, wig shampoo and conditioner and don't brush when wet but they still lose the bounce that they had. I use Valentine Wigs, Simply Wigs and Hot Hair.

Autumnismyfavouritetime · 17/08/2023 16:55

HuntingoftheSnark Not sure if it’s true but I read they coat them with silicone and once you’ve washed them you can never get them 100% the same again. Do you wear synthetic or human hair?

OP posts:
HuntingoftheSnark · 17/08/2023 17:22

@Autumnismyfavouritetime only ever synthetic. That's interesting and would make sense. I find that I replace them more often than I think I should need to. I wear them "up" when they start to look scruffy so I have a couple on the go at any one time. I'm also going to investigate having an older one chopped into a bob.
