Funeral wear for 11 year old

SomeonTookMyAnonymousUserName · 03/07/2023 20:23

Does anyone have any suggestions for DD to wear to a funeral please?

I'm looking for a dress in navy or grey maybe. I'm not keen on black for kids but would consider it if I see something appropriate.

I've searched Next and M&S (my go-to shops for kids) but was really disappointed. Where else can I look?

Just let her wear any simple dress. I don't think children need to wear sombre funeral clothing.

School uniform. Or if no uniform what they usually wear to school.

Does anyone really expect an 11 year old to dress for a funeral?

I do agree but she's seen what older family members are wearing and wants to be more like the grown ups.

I wouldn't think twice about what a child would wear; I just want to please her as it'll be a difficult day.

I bought a simple black dress from Vinted in the same situation. I put a load on my favourites that were vaguely suitable and let her choose. It’s actually quite nice, she might wear it again with her denim jacket and tie dye shoes! I had already trawled the shops with no luck - everything is too summery at this time of year!

Matalan? Primark? New Look? Big supermarkets? F&F in Tesco? George. Asda? Sainsbury’s?

Comedycook · 03/07/2023 20:34

My 12 year old DD wore a black jumpsuit for a funeral recently....with a very subtle floral pattern from h&m. She felt comfortable in it and looked smart enough and appropriately dressed without looking too somber for a child if that makes sense.

I understand. Hope it's not too tough a day for you all.

Also bought something on Vinted. Dress was from River Island

On a practical note, if she does music, singing or drama there is often a need for "concert blacks", so you might get more wear out of black than navy or grey. We often find stuff in New Look - there's a tween specific range, plus the regular range has petite and small size 6s.

School uniform if it’s a more traditional uniform. Otherwise I think pastels would be suitable if you can’t find black or grey or a white top/t-shirt with a darker bottom half if your DD wants to be more “grown up” hope you get something.

Is this something that is done at funerals? I've seen this suggestion on Mumsnet before. I'm not from the UK.
I've been to many funerals and I've never seen a child wearing a school uniform to one. If there are close family/friend they would usually have a new occasion and age appropriate outfit. If not that close then normal everyday but probably not dports clothing.
Would a child wear uniform to a funeral even if not attending school that day?
It always seems a strange suggestion to me but maybe it's the norm there.

Sorry for your loss OP.

www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0976623003.html black dress, h and m

I'm so sorry for you loss OP

I wore school uniform to a school friends funeral as a child but I wouldn't put DC in uniform unless it's a school friend.

Dd wore a pastel blue colour to a funeral we went to when she was 12
The dress was pretty-
It's from Monsoon- i am sure you could get similar in Navy.

I've seen it. Presumably because smartish and not brightly coloured.

Those two from next would be what I would order-

They are classic and can be worn again

Clammyclam · 03/07/2023 20:49

I agree with the second link here too

ChicoryDip · 03/07/2023 20:53

Something like this one with black ballet flats.

Amazon does skater style dresses in all sorts of colours. We have black *for hallowean) and purple (for a party). Let me see if I can find an example.

SavBlancTonight · 03/07/2023 21:02

this sort of thing

We always wore our school uniforms to funerals when we were children. Not everyone can afford to buy a new occasion outfit for a child that will grow out of it by the time the next one comes around. School uniforms were smart, and something we already had.

VikingLady · 03/07/2023 21:15

Honestly I'd put my 11yo in new black leggings with a nice dark coloured longish top. Or black trousers. School uniform sections of most clothes shops. And school shoes.

All easy to reuse.

SavBlancTonight · 03/07/2023 21:19

I think the school uniform thing is more boys? Grey/black trousers and a white shirt. Pretty common in my experience. Less clear for girls.
