Full length half under-skirt

My DD is wearing this dress to her prom, (looks very Boob-ish in the pics, but in real life it doesn’t look like that on her), but it’s quite sheer and needs some sort of slip underneath it. She’d ideally like a half slip as the top is laced at the back so she doesn’t want it to interfere and straps would show in the shoulders.

Problem is it seems hard to get on the high street these days! Has anyone seen anything either in the shops or somewhere I can get quick delivery? Many thanks!

The do long full slips as well. Chop off the straps and attach. Hand sewing is tedious but it shouldn’t be too much to do.

Does it get complicated around the zip though?

True.

Didn't think that through.

Having said that, the slips are very stretchy.

Oh and OP says it's laced at the back. That complicates things.

Carryonkeepinggoing · 30/06/2023 10:20

Try it on with a full slip and then sew her into it for prom (a few stiches where the straps meet the dress, then cut off the slip’s straps). Then cut the stitches when she wants to take it off.

It's awful that the dress isn't lined for that price

M&S are usually food for half slips and the nude colour is quite good

I still have really long slips from the 90s from M&S

I've just ordered a couple from Amazon in nude cotton from Beauticalate ( spelling!). A full length slip with straps & a nude waist slip. They are breathable, minimalist & comfortable as I didn't want anything synthetic in high humidity.

They sound great, may have a look

Nothing in M&S is cotton anymore

I think if I got a full slip on microfibre fabric then I could just cut it so that the back was left unlined round the lacing and it wouldn’t fray, especially if I hand sewed it in and rolled the edges of the fabric. Would be time consuming, but I could do it in an evening I think. There other way I could do it would be to follow the curved seam at the waist and just line the lower part of the dress.

What about a pink satin midi or maxi skirt - an actual skirt rather than a slip. The internet is awash with them.

Like this

We tried something similar, but it just looked too heavy under the dress fabric. It’s such a delicate pink that it looked strange. I thought I would be an easy fix to put a slip under it, but it’s proving more difficult than anticipated!

Thanks, this is also an option if the slip isn’t too loose or thick.

Tack on the skirt part first, see how it goes, but check in different light and take photos because it will show differently.

Then decide what to do, leave like this and or do the top as well.

Thank you for all the replies, and apologies for the delay in responding, I’ve been out all day since I last posted. I think the plan is to see how the M&S longer length half slip looks, and it if doesn’t look right then to get a full slip and fathom some way of sewing it in or sewing her into it for the night! Thanks for all the links and suggestions, feeing like we might just get it sorted this weekend! 😊

I know.
I bought up several of the M&S cotton ones in the sales a few years ago. I was debating dyeing one to a nude colour. I've bought a couple of really lightweight cotton dresses from Zara & they need a nude slip underneath. In high humidity in Asia you just can't wear microfibre slips 🥵

SheepBeepBeep · 02/07/2023 10:23

So I think we have a solution. We collected the half slips from M&S and she’s pulled one up under her bust line so you can’t see the waist of the slip and it seems to work well. She thinks it will stay there and it doesn’t feel uncomfortable, so she’s going with that. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. 😊
