VERY easy updo for shoulder length hair

I’m at a ball tonight and think hair up would look better with my dress but all I know what to do is a pony tail… Is there an easy up do I can do?! I am very low maintenance with hair and it may not be long enough for an updo anyway? It’s just below shoulders.

YouTube is very helpful for this. They will give you step by step advice and demonstrations.

Lancastri · 17/06/2023 13:32

Yes I’ve found one which I’m about to try but wondered if anyone had a tried and tested one!

Slicked back bun. Easy peasy.

Lancastri · 17/06/2023 17:14

Having just spent half an hour trying lots, I’m now going to wear my hair down. 😅 Can’t even do a bun - I think my hair might be too thin? Anyway, will need further practice another time. Thanks anyway!

Ooh, ooh, I have literally just discovered this one this week, but it has changed my life!

Brush your hair back in a half pony and secure it with (quite important) one of those little plastic bands that look like a slightly bigger version of the elastics you used to use for braces. Make a hole in the middle with you finger and thumb and flip the half pony through the hole so you have a slight twist. This makes it nice and secure.

Then grab the rest of your hair and give it a bit of a brush, then lift it up and tuck it into the half pony as if you are tucking it into a pocket. Smooth it and pin with 4 hair grips.

I've been wearing mine like this in all the heat and humidity this week and it has stayed smart all day. You could make it pretty with a decorative comb or pins.

Does the top half or bottom half stick out the bottom after? Can you post a photo?

GrimDamnFanjo · 17/06/2023 17:33

I got lost at what a half pony is...

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 17/06/2023 17:46

Sorry - will try to show you. Give me a sec and I will take photos.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 17/06/2023 17:56

Okay. Here is my hair, followed by half pony and then quick flip.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 17/06/2023 17:59

Then tuck - literally, grab hair, treat the half pony if it is the edge of a pocket and shove all hair in. Looks a bit like a bun. I might have overestimated how good it looks at the back! But it definitely feels secure, which is big in my book.

*please excuse my very dirty neck - dyed hair this morning and missed a bit!

That's great! Will be trying it tomorrow.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 17/06/2023 18:06

I tried it with a normal hairband and it was fine but slipped a bit. The plasticky bands make all the difference. It's been great to have hair off the neck in this weather.

octoberafternoons · 17/06/2023 18:10

I do similar to what PP shows above except sideways. My hair is a bit shorter now and it still looks great.

The only video I have saved is from Facebook, I hope the link works.

I don't really understand the instructions about a half pony tail.

The easiest for me is put hair in low, tight pony tail, comb and smooth. Divide the hair on the back of your head to create a sort of pocket and flip the ponytail up and fold it into the pocket, comb and smooth the divided bit , stick some Kirby grips to keep the pocket secure.

Or use a bun ring.

NatashaDancing · 17/06/2023 18:25

There's loads available for ring buns.

Please note - I don't think any of these, or the others you'll find on YouTube are "easy" until you've got the hang of putting your hair up and it will take practice.

Where in the half pony do you tick the rest of your hair? In the hole where you flipped? Your 'bun' looks like you've shoved it in the side bit the top. It looks so good I want to know how you did it

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden - just to check you know that shows your full name when it’s clicked on

I love that style @ElizabethinherGermanGarden !

my friend did this for her wedding (with v minimal help from me!) and it looked amazing. She did it a bit higher up so quite flexible depending on whether high or low suits you: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGJCJLJ2c/

i also sent her a link to this one which looks pretty easy and I think the half pony flip is what Elizabethinhergermangarden did first:

Oh fuck it. I'll take it down now. Thanks for the heads up.

doingmyboxin · 17/06/2023 19:09

Going to try that @ElizabethinherGermanGarden. Thanks!

mamakoukla · 17/06/2023 20:01

Look up Gibson tuck

keyboardkat · 17/06/2023 20:09

I just grab and twist and secure with a comb similar to the one above in ElizabethinherGermanGarden's post above. My hair is not thick and luxurious though! I leave tendrils on my neck area and to the side of my face. Easy and looks ok.

NatashaDancing · 17/06/2023 22:51

OP get supplies of Kirby grips and fine elastic bands. Have a look at hair accessories in Claire's accessories or Tegan. I have the small and the medium French pleat pins and they're great.

To start with you might find it easier with the type of clip or barrette that's meant to be seen until you the get the hang of the apparently effortless ones that stay up with no obvious support (but will have pins, grips, elastic bands, bun rings hidden in the bun).

You'll get the hang of it and it's worth it. Good luck.
