Bat mitzvah party dress

DD (13) has been invited to a Bat Mitzvah evening party.

Any ideas on dresses to wear? I have been looking at some, but am worried in case they’re too babyish! She is more like an 11 year old in body shape and height, so is too small for women’s clothing.

We are Jewish, not orthodox. I would suggest that DD wear a dress, the BMs GPs etc. could be more traditional and I would say it would be best to go to the knee and not be tight to the form or low cut, other than that I would say whatever DD likes is fine. They are normally like a fancy disco. DD will have a great time.

Disagree. They all wear something like this

proper orthodox may be different but mainstream Jewish and private schools it is minor variations on this

My DD is only 5 so not up on the scene. My DN will have hers next year and my DM would not shut up all night if girls turned up in a dress like that @movein

Disagree. It's like a uniform, all the girls wear the same. If you want your daughter to stand out in the wrong way then send her in a dress to the knee with a shawl.

I live in the middle of 3 Jewish Secondary School catchments and my DD's attend one. I have seen a lot of bat/barmitzvah.

For shul then yes, modesty etc but the party dress codes for these things in the reform community has really relaxed. Even my husband is horrified the boys go in trackies and trainers, in his day it was full dress suit and bow tie!

She might not shut up all night but that’s what they wear. I’ve just hosted one and been to about 10 this year, they spend the night schlepping them down but regardless of where they go to school that’s what they wear. There’s no individuality and actually with the trainers it looks fine. They don’t tend to go into heels until about year 10 or 11. My year 12 and her friends go long and heels but year 7/8/9 it’s this look

I can assure you unless they are at an orthodox school the girls will wear a dress like that.

My last dress post was on the moderate side, the majority of girls at our jewish school have this dress in various colours.

Wow I had a corset top dress for my bat mitzvah (granted, v long time ago) and thought that was daring. These dresses are something else!

But certainly agree that she'll have a great time - the year I turned 13 was probably one of the best years of my life - so many parties!!

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 16/06/2023 20:54

I might suggest to DB that DM might be best to go to bed, rather than attend the party. She will have had a very tiring day after all and my dad will have to be up early to be on the stall.... and none of the DCs want earache Thanks for warning me folks! Grin

Somehow because they’re wearing chunky trainers usually with hair down and they don’t wear much make up they actually look quite cute rather than tarty.

Can I please revive this thread to ask what would be an appropriate outfit for a 16 year old female guest at the evening party of a Bat Mitzvah (N London)? We’re not Jewish, hence the question- she babysits for the family and is honoured to be invited.
