Bat mitzvah party dress

DD (13) has been invited to a Bat Mitzvah evening party.

Any ideas on dresses to wear? I have been looking at some, but am worried in case they’re too babyish! She is more like an 11 year old in body shape and height, so is too small for women’s clothing.

Ooh thank you that is lovely!!!

Lipsy in next does nice dresses that go small enough. I have the same issue with an 11 year old DD who is in 8-9 clothes but wants to dress like a teenage.

Great, thank you!

I got my niece, who is 11, this:

I love the 1920s vibe. Hope she has a great time, bat mitzvah is certainly an event to glam up for!

You’re welcome😁

How about a jumpsuit? We went to a first holy communion service yesterday (so younger children but still quite formal attire for guests). One little girl really stood out from the crowd wearing a white jumpsuit with butterfly style lace sleeves and sequinned trainers.

CM283648 · 16/06/2023 00:07

@vinoandbrie Have you got anything for your DD yet?

Athrawes · 16/06/2023 00:09

Check the modesty expectations with your host. Shoulders may not be acceptable.

vinoandbrie · 16/06/2023 00:10

I have ordered a few outfits online and am hoping they fit and that there’s one she loves! I have used this thread pretty much exclusively to find things, so thanks to all for the fab suggestions 😊

@vinoandbrie Can you show us the things you ordered if you are OK with that?

I would also agree with modesty aspect. Head covering and shawls are usually kept to hand at the venue.
You will be able to contact the person who invited you to ask too.

Pigtailsandall · 16/06/2023 10:01

What modesty issue? It's a party! The girls wear shirt/low cut/fancy stuff more than anything; they literally come to age so it's often their first dress that veers on a bit daring. I've literally never seen a shawl at a bat mitzvah. This would be totally different if the family was orthodox but if they've invited a non-Jewish classmates and friends, they won't be (unless op is Jewish which I didn't think as she's asking the question)

Pigtailsandall · 16/06/2023 10:07

*short, not shirt!!

TickledOnion · 16/06/2023 12:11

She only needs to be modest if she’s invited to the synagogue service which would’ve clearly mentioned on the invitation. If it’s a bat mitzvah party then no need for modesty.

Fifiellz · 16/06/2023 12:43

If she lives near me (outer north london) then 99% of the girls attending will be in body con dresses with trainers (Nike or Converse)

It feels like DD has been to one a week for the last year!

100% agree with the later messages on here. Bodycon dresses and high top trainers. Anything pretty or flouncy would be met with mortification by my DD, who is 12. They care not if they have no boobs or shape, same dress for everyone, it's very democratic! And yes, no need for modesty, it's a party, they'll have done the religious bit already. (and if ever anyone's on here who has a boy, trainers are the only acceptable shoe, regardless of the outfit! bow tie? tuxedo? TRAINERS!!!).

Mosaic123 · 16/06/2023 17:30

The party might also be modest - ish. For instance no strapless dresses. The blue one is likely to be fine though.

At a kosher bat mitzvah party there would be a grace after meals prayer said and short blessings over the food and wine before eating so the religious bit may not be finished. If the food is not kosher this is less likely.

If the Rabbi is invited the food is likely to be kosher.

Trousers for women/girls (jump suit) wouldn't be acceptable in a traditionally religious party.

It might be worth checking if it affects the choice of outfit.

London1305f · 16/06/2023 18:45

London mother of a DD who has attended lots of school friends batmizvahs and all the girls wear bodycon dresses and trainers. It’s a party as the religious element has already been done.

Maireas · 16/06/2023 19:57

I've been to Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and never saw a head covering or a shawl in the synagogue, never mind the party!

This. It’s the only thing they wear. Anything else will stand out

movein · 16/06/2023 20:28

Body con dress and trainers. They all wear this, they all look exactly the same. The batmitzvah girl will wear a short sticky out prom dress and trainers. Each and every 12/13 year old guest regardless of size and shape will wear a short tight dress and trainers

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 16/06/2023 20:35

We are Jewish, not orthodox. I would suggest that DD wear a dress, the BMs GPs etc. could be more traditional and I would say it would be best to go to the knee and not be tight to the form or low cut, other than that I would say whatever DD likes is fine. They are normally like a fancy disco. DD will have a great time.
